comparisons...

Lango, Blue, Tex and others - I think some of the 'excitement' over these comparisons is just the nature of the beast. There are all different angles to it. Nobody is right or wrong. Opinions over computers, cars, vacuum cleaners - will all cause similar debates.

Lango talks about comparison to Wintel HW. No question, that IS important overall to Apple to maintain and hopefully grow the market, but it may not really be all that relevant to many of us that just don't want to buy a Wintel machine (or run an illegal/unsupported OSX on a Wintel machine).

For those of us with fairly deep ties to Apple, we do look at the new products and compare them to our most recent Apple purchase. If they offer a better perceived value, we are generally pleased. The better the value, the sooner we will upgrade. If the value proposition looks poor, we hang on to our old products longer, maybe wait for the next rev. If it looks really, really poor, with no hope in sight, we throw in the towel and go Wintel.

So it really is reasonable for many of us to compare the new MB to the old iBook, not to compare it to a Dell. Many of us would not switch to Dell solely on price for equivalent HW. Even some of us 'cheapskates' wink

The Dell price comparisons are more important to fence-sitters (on both sides), and certainly when I see an opportunity to 'convert' someone from Windows. I may only attempt that if I can suggest hardware that is at least close to what that person might buy from Dell. I won't bother otherwise, unless I think the benefit from OSX, iLife, etc. for them far outweighs any price premium.
