Sure, I've now burned (literally) hundreds a DVDs on an 8x burner. "Lasted too long?" By that logic, there is no PC sold by Apple at any price that ought to have a SuperDrive.
8x DVD burning is quite "fast" in my world. Not that I'm going to be complaining when I step up to 16x and go twice as fast!
But I don't recall anyone declaring there was no point in Apple including CD-R burners at max 8x write-speeds back when that was what technology had to offer. And here we are today with DVD media costing less than blank CD media cost back then, and able to burn 7 times as much data in the same amount of time.
Beats the heck out of carrying around a spindle full of blank CDs.
