Canadian Superior Energy Inc., a Calgary-based natural-gas explorer, said Monday that it plans to drill a well in deep water due east of Boston to meet demand for fuel in the U.S. Northeast.
The company will begin seismic exploration this year in the Mayflower field, located 285 miles east of Boston, before drilling next year, Canadian Superior said in a statement to Bloomberg Business News. The field lies in waters controlled by Canada and the province of Nova Scotia.
"We are currently in the process of securing a partner for our Mayflower project, and we plan to proceed with high-priority seismic data over Mayflower later this year, to define Mayflower for drilling during 2004," said Mike Coolen, director of the company's East Coast operations, said in the statement.
Houston-based El Paso, the largest owner of U.S. natural-gas pipelines, and Canadian Superior agreed to spend $12 million to develop Mariner. The company didn't say how much the Mayflower field will cost to develop.
