How Intel as a Monopoly sees the CPU market:
Intel still has somewhat of a lock on business PCs, AMD now dominates the slum of consumer sales, but Conroe is coming with its faster FPU for games. Having Dell buy Alienware (which now sells AMD machines) and selling Conroe to these influential customers can get a chunk of that high end consumer market back from AMD. In the desktop segment only the high end makes money the rest of the desktop space loses money for Intel.

Flies in the ointment:
AMD will continue to gain share in server CPU and laptop CPU which is where all the real money is made. AMD already makes more per CPU, this will continue, and AMD now has the fab capacity to keep Intel bleeding market share. Next week AMD introduces dual core Turion64 CPUs.
