Pierson said YRC spent about $141.6 million on new technology and new equipment for its vehicle fleet in 2014. YRC plans to "double down" on technology and safety spending in 2015 as well, he said.
That spending went toward the goal of bringing about 600 new tractors into its fleet and its continued integration of freight dimensioners — devices that help shippers assess better prices for what they are moving — into the freight network. The company will continue to spend on tablets that will help drive up productivity in the network as well as in-vehicle safety technology to help prevent accidents on the road.
"(The age of the vehicle fleet) is probably not as bad as people think, and we're going to continue to reinvest in it," Pierson said.
