U.S. says plans tender for Iraq GSM licence

BAGHDAD, June 12 (Reuters) - The U.S.-led administration governing Iraq will issue a tender next week for a 1-1/2 to two-year licence to build a GSM cellphone network covering the whole country, a spokesman said on Thursday.The move represents an apparent reversal of policy. Last month Western officials in charge of Iraq said the priority was to restore the landline network, not to build a commercial GSM network in the country of 26 million people.
