Intel CFO Says Microprocessor Capacity Matching Demand

http://biz.yahoo.com/djus/030610/1027000846_1.html

Intel Corp. Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant said Tuesday that capacity in its microprocessor and chipset business is currently matching demand.

Its flash memory chip business, however, is suffering from excess capacity that was caused by a pricing "stumble" in the beginning of the year, Bryant said at the Bear Stearns 14th Annual Technology Conference in New York.

Good news / bad news, but one point that's interesting to point out is that Intel's huge investments in manufacturing are still paying off, much in spite of the nay-sayers. The flash overcapacity is expected, but the fact that microprocessors and chipsets are meeting demand says that Intel is probably shipping close to record unit volumes. The only difference between this year and 2000 (the year where Intel *did* ship record units) is that their mainstream CPU die was ~90mm^2, rather than 130mm^2. But, given 300mm wafer plants and numerous new facilities, production could very well be higher than before. We'll have to wait for the earnings conference next month for more information. Hopefully, one of the analysts catches on.
