I have thought that the people running the drug companies are always about 5 moves ahead of the crowd



I see enough unforced errors from drug companies that I often think some of them are about 5 moves behind the crowd. :)

My big complaint with the Abbvie patent (which I confess not to have actually read) is the concept that you can write some program that claims to predict trial results and get a patent based on those predictions. But without actually testing many combinations of drugs and finding which succeed and which fail, how do we even know the program does anything at all? How do we know the program wasn't covertly tweaked so as to predict combinations of the most promising drugs? (I assume it has a whole bunch of parameters that can be set).
