Did you dig a bit to find more about your "former republican strategist" Kevin Phillips?? That is about as accurate a description as speaking of "Ray Charles, who formerly had 20/20 vision." A writer for the ultra far left LA Times, who thought Regan had no chance of being elected, reelected, or to be even a modestly successful president, Phillips has predicted the downfall of conservatism more times than democratic national committee has predicted victory in the next elections. He was rabidly anti Regan, rabidly anti Bush, and anti anything conservative. He advocates gutting the military budget, soaking the rich for liberal spending programs and everything else on the far left agenda.
