"... DC and the warhawks were unwilling to give UN inspectors "more time" preferring a military route over time, investigation and diplomacy..."

I do not know why you still insist on following that delusional line of thinking. What had the UN accomplished over 12 years?? -- Nothing. Saddam was still there, still in power, still starving, torturing, and killing his people, while pursuing his programs of WMD's.
Only a fool believes that Saddam would have ever let the UN "inspectors" into Iraq had the US not stationed a 250,000 man vastly superior armed force on his borders with the intent of taking him out. And once they were in, how is a 100, 500, 1000 or however many inspectors going to ever find what Saddam wanted to remain hidden???? I could give you 100,000 inspectors to search California for some WMD's I have hidden around the state with the active help of the California government and police and you would never find an ounce of it. Does that not strike some chord of common sense with you???
It is militarily impossible to assemble a large force for attack like that and just keep them sitting there forever - they had to be used or brought home. The second we withdrew our troops from being prepared to attack Saddam, how much cooperation do you think he would give the UN - he was not cooperating even with the troops there!
I just do not understand the mindset of folks that think there was any chance whatsoever of the UN inspections working any better over the next 12 years than they did the previous 12 years.
