Paghman is a small town in the mountains above Kabul where many of the wealthy families of the city had summer homes. At an altitude of over 6,000 feet on a clear winter morning, the sun is quite warm, especially in courtyards sheltered from the wind. These men are winnowing grain. They cast the grain into the air, and the wind blows away the chaff. It is the same with photographs. Again and again one must discard images so that only the beautiful and good remain.
