There was no dust and there was no nuggets. The gold was very fine particles bound up in sulfides (iron pyrite). Some of the surface ore was oxidized (the iron sulfides were converted to iron oxide). At first they had no way to recover the gold from the oxides. They stockpiled this material and went after the sulfides. Initially they were able to use gravity separation to make a concentrate. This process wasn't very efficient but they were able to make it profitable. The concentrate was sold to smelters where the gold was recovered. Later they found that they could roast the ore which converted the sulfides to oxides and they could use cyanide to leach the gold. Once they had the cyanide process they were able to also recover the gold from the surface oxide material they had stockpiled. They also were able to roast some of the original sulfide tailings that had been through the gravity concentration process.

There might be some sulfides left in the tailings but these will have to roasted and treated with cyanide.

There is no nuggets and no dust in those tailings.
