I think you're missing a great deal, and inventing stuff to make up for the lack -g- ... of course we are talking spanish, that is what this whole 'official' thing is, it's a sleazy back-door way to exclude spanish ..... not khalkan mongolian, not swahili, not cockney rhyming slang - español .... let's be clear on this - if and when the narrow minds decide to move against another tongue, it can be added, but for now this is directed entirely against spanish

Interesting you mention above the french .... the quebecois are not french french, they are a unique and american people with a culture all their own, charming folks, their province is a great place to visit, and not just Montréal either .... they have there a law called bill 101, by which french is promoted above all other tongues

This is shameful .... for the state to dictate to the individual that he cannot put an apostrophe on a sign [yes, it says that], this is something from the dark ages, worthy of a Stalin or Somoza .... now i dearly love the quebecois, in general, got family living among them [several of whom are completely fluently trilingual, btw], you get in some of their small towns and you'd think you were in a happy ejido mexicano, it's that friendly ..... and it was true, that when that law was passed french had been declining in use, its enclave in NA is relatively small and is entered by massive amounts of english, so i can see the motivation, quite clearly ..... still, they are wrong on this - it is none of the business of the state to dictate language, period

... and you, posting presumably from that Great Cradle of Liberty to their immediate south, are proposing just such a Diktat ...... there are huge practical benefits, in our time of increasing trade and world affairs, to becoming familiar with each other's languages, there is also direct immediate benefit to any child who learns two or more well, just from his increased ability to learn anything else .... but you don't have to get to those arguments, don't need them, because for the US to deny spanish to its native speakers of the language is a violation of their human rights
