Dick Cavett was on in the late 60s.
I watched him when I was in high school.
He was far more esoteric than the common late show hosts.

Their shows never appealed to me because the guests were only there to promote their latest projects. Cavett's interviews were more in depth. I still remember when Janie Joplin was on. Pithy and poignant. The interview made a film biography of her. He also scored a lengthy interview with Katharine Hepburn that I've seen rerun on TCM. He was after her for quite awhile. One day she just showed up in his studio to check out him and the venue. The visit wound up being filmed and lengthy.

I loved his show. I think he was too intellectual to last in a mass market medium.
