Big box retail will test market and or launch products in many different configurations. For one example I know of two test market cases (products) where the big box retailer (Lowe's hardware store) took one manufacturers product and provided a "local test" in the dayton ohio market hanging it's sole product for sale on the shelving uprights.
Then the other case a sand paper products company was required to buy out the entire section of their "competitor" and place approved shelving into the lowe's store as a test roll-out. They have since been in lowes for around 10 or 15 years.
