New Medient Studios CEO Embraces Practical Approach to Making Multiple Movies

By Tracy Haynes, Reporter

From the outside, it’s hard for anyone interested to get a real handle on just what’s going on with Medient Studios. The studio drew lots of public interest last year when they announced that they would build a revolutionary new studio and theme park complex in Effingham county. The company not only promised to mass produce films for the international market at a rapid rate, but also to do the same for video games and music, all while creating a venue for family entertainment that would draw tourists from across the region. It was a grand plan that burst onto the scene and nearly as quickly turned to dust. The real trouble started when the company decided to oust founder and CEO Manu Kumaran. Up to that point, Medient had produced a number of films for the international market. But Kumaran’s ouster was troubling. Then his recent lawsuit requesting that the company be dissolved was even more cause for concern. But that lawsuit was recently dismissed, and Kumaran ordered to pay Medient’s court costs.

The new CEO of Medient, Jake Shapiro agrees with the judge’s ruling and says the company is now free to begin making films as originally planned. What will change though is the style of facilities which will be built. Kumaran’s original plans called for ultra futuristic building designs featuring large amounts of glass and steel. Shaprio says those concepts have been scrapped in favor of a new, much more practical design for the studio and future facilities. The next big step, he says, is to present a brand new master plan to Effingham County officials. That presentation is set to take place at the end of July.
