SmartCarb QotD:

"OK, Happy news to report. Sorry for the ramble that follows.

Long time since I've posted my SmartCarb experience in this thread. This is my second SmartCarb. The first suffered from a machining / casting defect. Corey quickly and graciously tested and replaced it.

I've reached a major turning point in my opinion / impression of the my SmartCarb. I'm 100% convinced it works as advertised. At this point I feel like I'm getting pretty close to optimal on my bike. I did my tuning on the street with a 42T rear sprocket and street-ish tire. From past street jetting, I went a bit overly rich in hopes of getting the off-road jetting right.

I ended up lowering the idle adjust screw (which lowers the resting position of the slide) and ended up with the clicker very close to where it was shipped. I may be 1 or 2 clicks richer.

My 300 runs stronger than it ever has before. Low end is as strong or stronger than the stock carb. Top end is, for me, almost unusably strong. (Note to self: shift sooner, don't twist it so far). Only criticism is that the mid range feels a bit weaker than the rest of the range.

Today's ride was very tight single track. I was on my 200 and I loaned the 300 to a friend who's bike was being rebuilt. We rode 30 miles in a bit over 2 hours engine time and a bit over 4 hours wall time. Lots of rest times. After 20 miles, when the other riders had enough We started swapping bikes. Before I rode my 300, I rode a friends 300. I thought it was the best running fastest 300 I'd ever ridden. I tested out my SmartCarb equipped 300 in the dirt for the first time. Holy Crap it's fast. Only slight issue seems to be when the PV is opening. (More on that later). I got going WAY WAY to fast. It turns out I can lock the front and rear tires just fine and not go over than handlebars. Crazy fast, smooth acceleration. I was going much faster than I expected.

My friend reported that the low end and top end were awesome, with perhaps a lack in the midrange, I think that issue is at the point where the PV is opening. The PV transition is quick, so unless you want to maintain speed within that 1000 rpm range, its not an issue.

I have to admit that initially I was very hesitant about the SmartCarb's performance. Not any more. It is different to tune thant the stock carb. For me, the thing that got me on board was accepting that Corey was fully committed and the SmartCarb could work. I then changed my attitude to find out why it was not working for me and accepted the fact that is was not the carb, but the tuning and my particular bike's setup.

I'm glad I hung in there with the SmartCarb, although now my 300 runs so well it scares me! I need to increase my skills.

After I get some advice from Corey, I'm going to tune the PV dolly setting and spring selection. I'm RED 2 or so in from flush. I have a feeling that I can improve the midrange PV transition, with some combination of the spring and dolly position and clicker, and look forward to working on that next."
