until it has taken an independent breath, it is not alive, it is not a human being it is not a person.

I'll go you one better. After 9 months plus of pregnancy knowing that something was growing in the womb and watching the birth, I wasn't convinced until I heard him cry. It was probably the longest seconds of my life waiting to hear that cry. Only then did I know he was alive and okay.
