Thanks - that piece explains a lot of puzzling issues.

Note the point he makes about this "toehold" strategy decreasing the (apparent) premium though. To the extent they pushed up the price of the target ahead of the deal, so the premium of the deal drops over the market price when the deal is finally announced.
