BOP. Maybe the answer is to "not even go there" as far as the libel issue is concerned, and instead of using libelous as an excuse for deletion, use personal attacks. The reason I say this, I really believe that there has to be some point where what someone says is taken to task. If there's no line drawn anywhere, then people can say whatever they want about a person.
