I am part owner of a walk-up ice cream shop. We play music outside the building for our customers. I have been told that any music provided for the public is subject to ASCAP and BMI royalty fees. This includes simply playing local radio stations. XMSR and SIRI (as well as Muzak) can take care of the royalty payments through licensing I believe. Failure to pay the fees can result in large penalties (thousands of dollars I've heard). My commercial account is $24.95/month.
