The only areas where AMD beats Intel is on price and their model numbering.

I have a dream that little children will spend their entire youth starring into a screen playing Worlds of War and never see the outdoors.
Outdoors, schmoutdoors! Netherstorm is beautiful! lots of pretty purples, blues, and reds; just like a pipe dream! I bet Jimmy H would've loved playing WOW stoned. :)

Those poor people. They all seem to be DIY'ers running into the same problem. I hate that kind of trouble shooting. Nothing worse then spending a boat load of money on gear that doesn't work right. They would've saved a lot of time if they simply bought a Q6600 based system.
Snow
LOL, then there's the ones granted in 2000 at $61/share. DOA

Doing my part. I just bought a desktop replacement laptop for my wife. Her current desktop is an old Dell Dimension with a NW P4 @ 2.4GHz. I passed it on to her when I built my current E6700 desktop last September. Here's the specs on her new laptop:
HP Pavilion dv9700t Notebook PC
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
C2D Processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
HP Imprint Finish + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and BluetoothTM
320GB 5400RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (160GB x 2)
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
This laptop is primarily for surfing and photo editing. It may also be used to play WOW if I can get my wife addicted like I am. :)

Was in Santa Clara this week and drove by Transmeta, there was a "For Lease" sign on their property. :)

I don't recall him telling you "you couldn't voice your opinion." Lighten up and don't be so defensive. Better yet, perhaps listen to his advice and check out the fundamentals. After all, isn't that what this board is for?

Wild speculation, but I wonder if this guy was trading Intel stock during the unprecedented plunge.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/25/business/worldbusiness/25trader.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
I wonder if Societe Generale will reveal which stocks he was trading (if they even know).

The first batch of AMD Phenom processors finally went on sale last November, with the 9500 (2.2GHz) and 9600 (2.3GHz) models making a first appearance. Initial pricing was set at $283 and $251, however because their performance was lagging a bit behind its direct competition, AMD was quick to respond with a price reduction that set them at $251 and $209, respectively.
Could be, I guess it depends on the prices AMD gives the 9700 and 9900. Have you seen any preleased figures on pricing for these?
Snow
Why did they limit Intel's peformance scores to the bottom bin Q6600 but then turn around and expand AMD's performance scores to top bin products that haven't even been released? Minor oversight? Hmmm
Snow
Mas,
You are taking the "glass is half empty view" because you are bias AMD. An Intel bias "glass is half full view" would say that Intel brought AMD's three consecutive years of market share gains to a complete halt in a mere eighteen months (June 2006 to Dec 2007). 2008 is going be a significant year. If AMD continues to hold its market share then Intel will need to revisit their strategies.
Snow
Don't worry savantu, Intel Sales & Marketing will see this data too and respond accordingly.
Snow
ROFL... Saggy vs Silicone, what would you prefer?
Snow
Just a thought. AMD picked the best time possible to write off the ATI goodwill (not that they had a choice) because their write off pales in comparison to some of the banks reporting this week. It doesn't look so bad compared to them.

Prof,
Feel free to browse this site and learn more about Intel Capital.

I think we have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, Stacy Smith's first time on stage in front of wall street wasn't the prettiest performance. I think some of the mixed messages came from his inexperience talking to analysts in this type of setting.
Snow
Professor,
If Intel Capital invested in companies simply to make a profit then I would agree with you, but they don't. There are many more reasons why Intel Capital does what it does and it isn't about investing for investing sake.
Snow
Professor,
I couldn't agree more. Too much money was wasted in venture investments that were outside Intel's core business. But I think that is in the past now. PO seems to be more focused on core business investments.
Snow
Professor,
From the earnings release: "(Intel)paid record cash dividends of $2.6 billion and used $2.75 billion to repurchase 111
million shares of common stock" This totals $5.35B spent in favor of shareholders. Some may make the argument that the $2.75B in stock repurchase didn't create share value but one can also make the argument that it prevented further share dilution which is a benefit for all shareholders.
Perhaps you would like Intel to drain their coffers so they have no more money for R&D, Capital Expenditures, etc.. But I would prefer Intel not follow AMD's approach to running their business, I prefer the current balanced approach.
Snow
Joey,
I think you hit the nail on the head. Intel management isn't managing the analyst's expectations very well. It seems like quarter after quarter the analysts find one variable to focus on and tear Intel apart based on that one variable (i.e. Inventory, Gross Margins, etc.)
Snow
Golfbum,
Intel switched from ISO's to NQO's in the late 90's then from purely NQO's (Non Qualified Options) to a mix of NQO's and RSU's (Ristricted Stock Units) depending on employee pay grade. FWIW, most of the NQO's issued in 1999 and 2000 will expire worthless in the next two years. You got out while the getting was good.
Snow
They aim their market and technological advantages toward enrichment of management and employees, not the shareholders.
BS! As an Intel employee that survived the last two years of h/c reduction (i.e. 99K employees in Q4 2005 to 86K employees in Q4 2007 and more reductions on the way) I would say Intel doesn't favor employees over shareholders. Intel has a delicate balancing act between customers, shareholders, and employees.
Snow
Umm... from $28.xx to $19.xx in just under two months due to a $.02 mis? I would say a slight over-reaction. PISSED.
Snow
Too late, the damage is already done and reflected in the stock price. Press releases aren't going to change anything for AMD because people are finally putting 2 + 2 together for themselves with out the help of an AMD PR Rep.
Snow
Nice bait and switch, Pete.
He's the master of bait and switch.. i.e. Intel choosing not to produce HD DVD and Blue Ray chips means their 45nm process is broken. Sigh...where's that brick wall, it's much more enjoyable beating my head against it than it is debating with Peter.
Snow
LOL, gotta love it! AMD goes to CES and rather than being able to show case their products, they have to answer critical questions about their lack of execution over the past year or so. Ouch.
Snow
Dear Peter,
But you have to give me an "A" for effort because at least I tried to comprehend your answer among all the other irrelevant BS you wrote. ;)
Snow
wbmw,
I wouldn't even bother with a reply, it's not worth your time and effort.
Snow
So your answer to my question is yes and, as always, your reasoning why is very amusing. Thanks for the laugh.
Snow
BIG Ouch! AMT reform is long overdue. We're not living in the 70's anymore and the rules need to change fast or be totally eliminated.
Snow
Let me guess, your Incentive Stock Options triggered your AMT?
Snow
Dear Pete,
Please read these and let us know if (and why) you still think Intel is having problems with .45nm.

mmoy,
The three E8000 series products are dual core desktop penryns.
Snow
I'm wondering if there are enough arch changes for Sales and Marketing to call these products Core 3.
Snow
LMAO..... No, really, I'm in tears... Thanks!
Snow
wbmw,
You make a good observation. When building a system, $30 won't get you another gig or more of ram or the next step up in a graphics card but with Intel's product line up and pricing, you can get a faster cpu. It's a no brainer.
Snow
Jay,
As an Intel investor, this is very encouraging because it shows AMD's management still has their blinders on. They really seem to be wearing rose colored glasses. Even if their assertion about their volume play is true, do they really think Intel can't counter them? Don't they understand Intel is in a far superior competitive position than they are (i.e. cost, quality, availability, performance, power efficiency, etc..). They continue to act the same way they did when Intel launched CMW; basically, they're choosing to ignore just how competitive Intel is. Their bad.
Snow
We need to keep a close eye on their Q4 earning's report in January because I'm getting the feeling that AMD is using this to distract from other significant financial misses in their core business (i.e. Oh, this is only a one time impairment charge, with out it everything would've been fine, yeah right Hector.)
