Accor Asia Pacific have announced that 19 Novotel hotels and resorts throughout the region have achieved Green Globe Sustainable Tourism Certification. An additional 12 Novotel’s in the region have attained the “benchmarked” status and are well underway towards certification.
This significant commitment is part of the ambition to have the Asia Pacific network of 81 Novotel’s certified, by year end.
The newest hotels to achieve certification are Novotel Bali Nusa Dua, Novotel Lombok and Novotel Bogor.
Globally the Novotel network of almost 400 hotels and resorts has made a commitment to Green Globe Sustainable Tourism by 2010.
“Today’s traveler is increasingly aware of the impact that travel has on the environment and seeking hotels that demonstrate a credible commitment to positive environmental practices” says Evan Lewis – Vice President Communications for Accor Asia Pacific. “The Green Globe Sustainable Tourism Certification process brings a heightened environmental consciousness to our hotels, as it engages with all departments and with employees at all levels, resulting in improved practices and reduced wastage and consumption of water and energy.”
The Green Globe certification takes place in two stages; first an assessment of the environmental performance according to a benchmarking audit and then the establishment of environmental management system to improve each hotels performance with respect to sustainable development policies. Following this, each hotel is externally audited for compliance to Green Globe standards.
Novotel has been actively involved in Sustainable Development for more than ten years through the Accor Group's Earth Guest program.
This engagement was strengthened as Novotel undertook to achieve Green Globe international environmental certification, pledging in April 2008 to have its entire network committed to certification by 2010.

Green Globe International, Inc. and Village Green Environmental Solutions Partner to Create Climate Solution for U.S. Small BusinessesLast update: 5/15/2009 10:03:00 AM--
MURRIETA, Calif., May 15, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Green Globe International, Inc. (GGLBE), the worldwide owner of the Green Globe brand, today announced the signing of a partnership with Village Green Environmental Solutions, Australia, a leader in the field of emissions, water and waste auditing, to provide environmental certification for small businesses within the United States.
The partnership will assist U.S. small businesses to be internationally recognized by Green Globe, the pre-eminent symbol for sustainability and response to global climate change, for their efforts in assessing their carbon footprint via the Village Green online software tool. Green Globe International is constantly updating its suite of online tools and has selected Village Green's technology to lead its business and community certification across the United States and into its other global destinations. Village Green is providing the technical expertise supported by its own online reporting tool, known as IWASP. Both web and application based, this software has been used by Village Green to audit more than 3,000 businesses over the last eight years. It incorporates around 30,000 devices in its database to allow businesses and individuals to measure greenhouse gas emissions with ease. Small business can go through an online portal to generate international standard environmental reporting, covering, energy, waste, water and transport use. Information is verified against workplace behavior and compared to their utility bills.
The application results in a downloadable report and qualifies for undertaking Green Globe certification. Certification will assist state and local government to address community based energy efficiency by working with clusters of small businesses nationally. "State and county representatives are now well placed to provide world's best practice in environmental reporting to their small business communities and realize an opportunity which meets the criteria and support of the recently announced Energy Efficiency Community Block Grants.
The signing of this partnership will provide tremendous value to small businesses in the community by encouraging employment opportunities, reducing business operating costs and addressing climate change," said Doug Smith, CEO of Village Green Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd. "Green Globe International requires its certified businesses to scientifically measure their performance in key areas of sustainability.
The online system offered by Village Green far exceeds this performance measurement to now allow our clients to identify exactly which divisions of their company, as well as appliances and other equipment, that need immediate improvement," said Bradley Cox, Chief Operating Officer, Green Globe International Inc.
Mr. Cox added, "In our experience, businesses are keen to do whatever they can to reduce their impact on the environment as well as get their staff involved in this important contribution. Village Green provides the opportunity for these environmental strategies to be precisely planned for and budgeted. Business can achieve significant reductions in an economical and efficient manner."
Mr. Smith agreed, saying, "On a global scale, businesses are increasingly aware of their responsibility to positively impact climate change. This partnership adds value to the Village Green small business programs that counties are currently adopting throughout the United States. Now small business will not only have the tools to save money and reduce environmental impacts, they will have the opportunity to be recognized to an international standard, globally."

G20 AND GREEN GROWTH - CHINA CAN LEAD SAYS UNWTO
Hainan Island, is being developed as an international Tourism Island by China, with the support of UNWTO
“Tourism and Travel can support the G20 stimulation programmes” says the UNWTO “It creates jobs, boosts development and promotes open, two way trade. It can also play a part in the transformation towards a new Green Economy. China’s vibrant tourism sector can become a model for other nations and a world leader.”
Addressing the Boao Forum for Asia on “Tourism and the Financial Crisis” UNWTO Assistant Secretary-General Geoffrey Lipman explained that tourism – business and leisure travel - can play a role in the G20 led economic recovery. “Tourism is a service industry and that means people – not only in the sector but throughout the value chain.
In areas such as manufacturing for transport, construction for infrastructure and agriculture for food.” He added “It’s also a development lifeline – for the poorest countries; tourism is a major export. China, which has emerged as a world leader in tourism, is on course to becoming the top domestic, inbound and outbound market in the world and thus has a vital role to play.”
The Chairman of China’s National Tourism Administration (CNTA), Shao Qiwei affirmed that China’s actions to counter the financial crisis would help global tourism. “Policies from both central government and local governments to boost consumption will sustain domestic and outbound tourism.” He added that “reviving global tourism needed efforts from all countries and regions. China would contribute its part, with other nations, to help the industry recover.”
UNWTO is also calling for recognition of the potential for the sector to contribute to the long-term transformation to a Green Economy, based on reduced carbon outputs, clean energy and new technologies. Mr. Lipman said that “we account for 5% of carbon emissions and we have to fix that in line with new norms, which will be developed at the UNFCCC in Copenhagen at the end of this year – in a timely, globally meaningful and appropriately differentiated way. So we need smart tourism that links wise growth with clear carbon reduction. We must adapt, mitigate and use technology as never before. And we must secure financing for the poorest countries to stay in the game.”
The meeting took place on Hainan Island, which is being developed as an international Tourism Island by China, with the support of UNWTO.

"The size and scope of our plans for the Green Globe brand not only represent additional revenue streams and value for the company, but they will clearly also provide a tremendous amount of awareness and name recognition for Green Globe in regions where the program's prestige and long history is relatively unknown. Restructuring the common stock will help us to capitalize on increased awareness in the U.S. public markets and attract a broader audience, including, potentially, institutional investors," Mr. Peacock said.
"Going green is in no way a fleeting movement. It is becoming more of an expectation every day, and as a greater number of companies and organizations seek a clear pathway to demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility, Green Globe International plans to offer programs under the Green Globe brand to assist them in their efforts and to highlight their good works. As we work to respond to this demand, we also need to be prepared to present the public company to the appropriate market audience, and the restructure is expected to help us in these efforts," Mr. Peacock added.
The Green Globe brand and program trace their roots back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 Heads of State endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of Sustainable Development.
Green Globe International, an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has endorsed the efforts of the United Nations Foundation, Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNWTO in launching the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC).

The event sponsorship referred to in the Travel Mole story does involve
Green Globe International. As worldwide owners of the brand, any event
involving Green Globe inherently involves Green Globe International, but
this event is being sponsored by the company and attended by company
representatives and affiliates
the only way to reach your goal is to have a plan

Ted Turner Announces First-Ever Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria at World Conservation Congress
Voluntary standards help travel suppliers around the world meet increasing consumer demand for products and services that will have positive effects on communities and the environment
BARCELONA, Spain, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- United Nations Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner joined the Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) today to announce the first-ever globally relevant sustainable tourism criteria at the IUCN World Conservation Congress. The new criteria -- based on thousands of best practices culled from the existing standards currently in use around the world -- were developed to offer a common framework to guide the emerging practice of sustainable tourism and to help businesses, consumers, governments, non-governmental organizations and education institutions to ensure that tourism helps, rather than harms, local communities and the environment.
"Sustainability is just like the old business adage: 'you don't encroach on the principal, you live off the interest'," said Turner. "Unfortunately, up to this point, the travel industry and tourists haven't had a common framework to let them know if they're really living up to that maxim. But the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) will change that. This is a win-win initiative -- good for the environment and good for the world's tourism industry."
"Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries and a strong contributor to sustainable development and poverty alleviation," said Francesco Frangialli, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. "Over 900 million international tourists traveled last year and UNWTO forecasts 1.6 billion tourists by the year 2020. In order to minimize the negative impacts of this growth, sustainability should translate from words to facts, and be an imperative for all tourism stakeholders. The GSTC initiative will undoubtedly constitute a major reference point for the entire tourism sector and an important step in making sustainability an inherent part of tourism development."
The criteria were developed by the Partnership for Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC Partnership), a new coalition of 27 organizations that includes tourism leaders from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Over the past 15 months, the partnership consulted with sustainability experts and the tourism industry and reviewed more than 60 existing certification and voluntary sets of criteria already being implemented around the globe. In all, more than 4,500 criteria have been analyzed and more than 80,000 people, including conservationists, industry leaders, governmental authorities and UN bodies, have been invited to comment on the resulting criteria.
"Consumers deserve widely accepted standards to distinguish green from greenwashed. These criteria will allow true certification of sustainable practices in hotels and resorts as well as other travel suppliers," said Jeff Glueck, chief marketing officer of Travelocity/Sabre, a member of the GSTC Partnership. "They will give travelers confidence that they can make choices to help the sustainability cause. They also will help the forward-thinking suppliers who deserve credit for doing things right."
Available at www.SustainableTourismCriteria.org, the criteria focus on four areas experts recommend as the most critical aspects of sustainable tourism: maximizing tourism's social and economic benefits to local communities; reducing negative impacts on cultural heritage; reducing harm to local environments; and planning for sustainability. The GSTC Partnership is developing educational materials and technical tools to guide hotels and tour operators in implementing the criteria.
"The American Society of Travel Agents feels it especially important to be a part of this global partnership that is leading the way in defining once and for all what it means to be a sustainable travel company," said William Maloney, Chief Operating Officer for ASTA. "As an organization with its own Green Member program, it's incumbent upon us to ensure that our steps toward a travel retailers' green initiative were in sync with responsible global developments. The criteria will provide our members with much-needed guidelines for assessing future business partners' commitment to sustainable tourism while offering consumers clear and reliable information about the travel choices they make."
"The Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria initiative is about steering the industry onto a truly sustainable path -- one that echoes to the challenge of our time: namely the fostering and federating of a global Green Economy that thrives on the interest rather than the capital of our economically-important nature-based assets," said Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme.
"The Rainforest Alliance celebrates the outcomes of the GSTC Partnership, which we believe will help the tourism industry put itself on a sustainable path," said Tensie Whelan, Executive Director of the Rainforest Alliance. "The Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria that have been developed will shape the minimum requirements that the Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council will demand from accredited certification programs and help travelers have the assurance that they are helping, not harming, the environment."
"The GSTC Partnership is a collaborative effort to provide a much needed common framework and understanding of sustainable tourism practices," said Janna Morrison, Senior Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Choice Hotels International. "Tourism is an important and growing industry that supports sustainability and will clearly benefit from this common framework. Ultimately this effort will result in a positive impact on communities and the environment."
"Expedia is proud to support the Partnership for Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria and committed to using these criteria as a standard for designating a travel partner 'sustainable'," said Paul Brown, President Expedia Partner Services Group and Expedia North America. "Consumers today are more motivated than ever to incorporate sustainable practices into their lives, at Expedia we are motivated as well and dedicated to being a leader in sustainable travel. We're proud of our travel partners -- hotels and tour operators -- who are already excelling in this area, and hopeful that they will set the bar for their peers around the world. We hope that our travelers will see and appreciate the hard work our partners go through to fulfill these criteria and reach the benchmark of sustainability."
