Damn! Those beats are so fresh! Scratch: The Ultimate DJ
Genius, in a diligent attempt to prove that their upcoming turntable sporting beat-a-thon Scratch: The Ultimate DJ game is not merely a DJ Hero clone, (which would be difficult considering DJ Hero isn’t out ’til the fall) have released a new video highlighting the tricks and treats on offer from their patented SCRATCH DECK device.
The obvious difference between Scratch: The Ultimate Hero and DJ Hero is how the former has real-life turntable manufacturer Numark on board to create what they classify as the perfect device for scratching. With spinning wheels and cross-faders on board, the two peripherals roughly perform the same duties but it’s the presence of 5 Akai Pro MPC-style drum pads on the SCRATCH DECK that allow budding DJs to introduce custom samples into their mixes.
Just like what happened between Rock Band and Guitar Hero, it looks like we’ll have two* similar (but not identical) DJing products on the market at the same time, both vying for your dope mixing skills. It’s hard to tell at the moment who has the edge here. After all, Activision obviously have deep pockets and know the “simulated music playing genre” down to a tee. Genius on the other hand have Numark’s industry knowledge suggesting a peripheral that may be very close to the real thing - or as close as you’re going to get within in a game.
It will be interesting to see how both games pan out.

E3 Thoughts: "Scratch: The Ultimate DJ" for the PS3
A good portion of the post-E3 hype when it comes to music games has been fueled by Activision's upcoming game DJ Hero, but an in-development DJ mixing game by a California-based home video company might have what it takes to rain on Activision's parade.
Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is a music game similar to the popular Konami game Bemani, but instead of piano-type keys and a turntable Scratch features a turntable, fader, and five color-coded synth pads. The game takes cues from what's worked in the past for other music games when it comes to the in-game interface. Colored "notes" come at the player and eventually hit a line which signifies when players are supposed to hit the proper key on their professional-grade "scratch deck" (made by Numark). Same is true as to when to scratch with the free-spinning turntable or use the crossfader. Unlike DJ Hero and most other music games, however, Scratch doesn't penalize players for freestyling (hitting notes when the game doesn't ask for them to be hit) and in fact rewards players for doing so if it works well with the music. This may of thinking encourages creativity on the players side and, in turn, the game ends up being as fun as the player wants it to be.
At the time of demo at E3 only a number of songs were available, but Genius did a good job obtaining popular R&B and pop songs that their mostly American audience would want to play and freestyle to. Track (so far) include "Feel Good, Inc" by Gorillaz, "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West, "Intergalactic" by The Beastie Boys, and "Let's Get It Started" by Black Eyed Peas. Scratch is supposed to also feature music from Dr. Dre, Far East Movement, MURS, and Nelly (among others).
There is currently no release date announced and Scratch: The Ultimate DJ has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ combines free-form DJ tricks with great rhythm game play similar to top-selling rhythm games. Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is set in distinctive urban environments and will feature songs from the biggest names in Hip-Hop.
SCRATCH DECK combines two essential elements of the DJ and hip-hop experience - a free-spinning, touch sensitive turntable with a crossfader and 5 Akai Pro MPC-style drum pads. The turntable allows players to add their own style and manipulate the songs in real time, while the MPC-style drum pads give players the opportunity to perform and customize tracks by triggering samples using the very same pads that are the cornerstone of professional hip-hop beat production. Samples can either be pre-loaded into the game using 60 unique battle records that will ship with the software, or players can record and upload their own samples using a compatible USB microphone.
In addition to the features created by Numark, SCRATCH DECK also contains standard game controls found in music rhythm games. The turntable features a realistic surface that feels remarkably similar to a vinyl record. The drum pads and the crossfader also deliver an authentic and realistic music production experience. Left-handed DJs will appreciate that SCRATCH DECK is designed for use in right or left-handed configurations.

FM ADVENTURE: FM IN SCRATCH - THE VIDEO GAME
There’s a new game coming to town called SCRATCH - The Ultimate DJ, that is the same concept as Rock Band but for djs, with a mini turntable set up designed by Numark. The best best thing about this whole game…. It features THE FAR EAST MOVEMENT!!
After the E3 Expo 2009 in downtown Los Angeles, Scratch and Numark held a special premiere party at Club Elevate for the new game and gave a few people a sneak preview to play the game before the game is even finished… with some crazy special performances and appearances from some people that got us star struck we’ll show ya later on in the post.
They game company sent out a super luxury suv to pick us up early to head to soundcheck.. and inside the car they had fiji water and sour redvines, what more could you ask for? We’ve been dying to test out the game so right when we got to Elevate we headed straight to business…
AND GUESS WHAT WE SAW NEXT…. WOW… FAR EAST MOVEMENT - ANIMAL next to Gorillaz, Eric B and Rakim, The Beastie Boys, Kanye West and more!!
Im a fan of the guitar hero/rockband game play so this game works out dope for me. we always said someone should make a game like this.. and they finally did!
Check the mini turntable..
Alot of your favorite hits were made on this beast.
Getting close to showtime so we headed back to Elevate for the Scratch Premiere Party… set to perform was FM, the crazy DJ Numark from Jurassic 5 and Raekwon the Chef from the legendary Wu Tang Clan was pretty crazy meeting Numark and Raekwon who we’ve been fans of since we first started rhyming, but then…. out of nowhere… QUINCY JONES, the man behind the classic MJ Thriller album and countless other classic albums and grammy awards and tv shows and anything entertainment related, walks in and sits at the table next to ours… probably the most famous person i’ve ever met. Shout outs to Quincy Jones’s grand kids who were hella cool and asked for autographs from us, that’s TITE. I couldn’t grab any pics but heres a few:
Scratch: E3 Party Photos
DJ Numark of J5 cuttin it up
FAR EAST MOVEMENT IN THE BUILDING!
and now its time for me to get my SCRATCH on. I’ve never dj’ed before in my life so this game might be a challege, but i can get down in Guitar Hero.. can i beat Virman’s score of 88%?
Look at DJ Virman looking worried…
My gaming skills had paid off… the mini turntable controller and MPC pad was dope to use.. and i got the score of 91% on the beginner level barely beating DJ Virman’s score… BUT I DID!!!!!!
Looks like yall dj’s better step ya game up and watch out for DJ Prohgress… lookin to hit the clubs up soon lol.
Thanks to Hunnypot Records and Scratch for having us at such a dope event and immortalizing our song “ANIMAL” of our current album titled ANIMAL.

They say Failure is Opportunity in Disguise. In a reversal of fortune, Genius Products has now gained valuable video game development capabilities and technology from 7 Studios. This will enable Genius Products to further integrate with the video gaming industry.
Of course Scratch: The Ultimate DJ will benefit shareholders! Lets face it, this is way bigger than many of us have even imagined for a small company like Genius to compete toe-to-toe with a giant like Activision.
Activision is the undisputed marketing Guerrilla, however I am confident Scratch: The Ultimate DJ will win the DJ battle with the help of QD3 and Numark. Genius will also likely use Guerrilla marketing as an opportunity.
At any rate, I see future consolidation between the Video Game and Movie industries, as they share similar opportunities and challenges. The future looks bright for Genius.
The RZA from Wu-Tang Clan is included in an upcoming Dragon Dynasty DVD title "The 36th Chamber" from Genius Products. Will Genius and QD3 include the Wu-Tang Clan in the upcoming video game title, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If “The 36th Chamber” isn’t as action packed as the work of Bruce Lee (who was always better than his movies), it is richer and more rewarding. And the bookend combat scenes are impressive (those of Sammy Potts’ mentality can rest assured that, like Lee, Liu has the ability to “whip nunchucks around like a hundred times per second” and “scissor kick a dude who’s still hanging onto his foot”).
It was, in fact, Shaw Brothers movies like “King Boxer” (aka “Five Fingers of Death,” aka the movie from which Tarantino appropriated the sound effects that accompany The Bride’s flashbacks in the “Kill Bill” films) that helped pave the way for Lee’s popularity. And the influence of those movies – particularly “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” – can be seen in movies as varied as “Big Trouble in Little China,” “The Karate Kid,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda,” as well as in video games like “Mortal Kombat” and in such cartoons as “Dragon Ball Z” (even “The Simpsons” paid a visit to a Shaolin temple).
Some of the best Shaw Brothers movies – including “The 36th Chamber” – are getting a DVD makeover with the help of another brotherly movie conglomerate, The Weinstein Company. Through the Dragon Dynasty label, which is a joint venture with Genius Products, a number of Shaw Brothers standouts including “King Boxer,” “The One-Armed Swordsman” and “Come Drink With Me” have been remastered and can be seen in crisp, vibrant prints that show the lavish attention to color, set design and movie craftsmanship not evident in the faded theatrical copies or subsequent video bootlegs.
The DVDs are further enhanced with an array of supplemental material (“The 36th Chamber,” for example, features a surefire contender for Most Awkward Commentary Ever in the pairing of Wu-Tang Clan’s The RZA – a formidable Shaolin scholar – and Los Angeles-based film writer Andy Klein – a master of uncomfortable segues).
So, prepare yourself. Firecrackers, boxing robots and Bruce Lee are fine, but the brothers Shaw take “kick-assness” to a new level of “unquestionable awesomeness!”
Thanks for the clarification!
I can rest easier, lol
QD3 Entertainment CEO and chief creative officer Quincy Jones III recently told MTV News that they will be releasing Scratch: The Ultimate DJ game that will not just be limited to rock music as the present musical video games do, but also, urban tracks from the ’70s, ’80s and to the present popular ones. He said the Scratch game does not even have a guitar controller or drum kit as that in other hip-hop games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
What the Scratch game has instead is a controller which will include DJ equipment like a scratch desk, CDJ turntable with realistic crossfader and MPC drum-machine-style buttons as manufactured by Numark, the largest manufacturer of real DJ equipment in the world. He added that Scratch gamers can select the samples that they want to be scratching within the game and use the crossfader to select them as similar to that when one uses a CDJ.
But what makes Jones and his co-makers of Scratch game excited is on how the game is designed to positively reward gamers whenever they use their musical creativity to make a song mix sound better.
With ‘Guitar Hero,’ you’re playing along with the songs and if you play a note different from the original you get penalized. … But with this game, if you’re playing along, at some point you get a chance to flex your own skills if you want to do a scratch solo or add a new beat to it, you can do that and get extra points,” this music entrepreneur said over mtv.com.
Already, Jones and a number of music experts are working on fine-tuning Scratch which will be made available by Genius Products on multiple next generation game systems.
