Thanks ES. I downloaded Panda and it is working fine. Have no idea what the problem was with the other antiviruses I tried, but I guess all is well that ends well and everything else appears to be working fine.
Thanks again.

Don't think it is that simple. Having the same problem hen I tried AVG -- it wouldn't run either. I believe the problem goes deeper, but i'll try Panda if it will run at all on an old XP.
using MSEdge browser on Win10 machine, free account, running AdBlockPlus. The streamer starts with "Sponsored by NNW" whatever that is. . .

Every time I click on a new message I get a stupid ticker streamer across the bottom of the new page. I'm getting tired of clicking it off every single time. I can find no place in settings to get rid of it.
How do I stop this annoying thing from repeatedly loading on my pages? TIA

Mornin all.
I'm having a problem with my old Acer WinXP machine. A few days ago Avast advised me to download an update to the program. I did so and now Avast will not run at all. System Restore does not work. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware in Safe Mode and they found nothing so I eliminated an infection as the cause of this problem.
I suspect a corrupt MS or User file. Any thoughts on how to check this?
I tried a clean install of Avast, and it shows in my program files but will not run. I tried starting it in services.msc (where it is listed as Automatic) but I then got the message that the IDSAgent would not start due to Error 1053 (a timeout error). One suggested fix was to go into the registry and increase the timeout time. When I did that my computer refused to upload windows at all so I went into Safe Mode again and reversed that and then windows loaded just fine.
As of right now, I have no antivirus software running at all, and that makes me uncomfortable. Any suggestions? TIA

Yes, it has been a while, MG. I don't post much any more, concentrate more on my trading, but still read a lot of threads here on Ihub, and try to offer info when I think it can help.
Hope my solution works for you. The tape has made my broken cell phone usable for about 6 months now, and hopefully will for at least 6 more!
Newly
Good, you? Haven't had any computer problems since I bought the cheap little Win10 laptop and hooked it up to a docking station and a TV. Still read the thread anyway as I can always learn from others' problems. Still think of Bruce Thompson often, too. He helped me a lot when I built my first computer.
Newly
Since it is not too distracting, I'll make a suggestion: a while ago I dropped my expensive cell phone and cracked the glass. The break was mostly on one side in the corner and not too distracting but there were two longish cracks pointing towards the center of the screen, so when I got home I took some clear packing tape and taped it up so the cracks would not "grow" and moisture would not enter. Doesn't affect the touch screen at all which was my one concern. Have had no problem with it since. Just a very cheap suggested solution . . .

When messaging, hit the little microphone on the keypad and you can speak your message instead of typing it. BTW, it spells beautifully, but doesn't punctuate. That said, I find it a nice feature not to have to type on that tiny keyboard.

I've used a cooling pad ever since I got my first laptop.
I've heard HP uses cheap components in their computers -- don't know how true that is as I've never owned an HP.
Newly
For years I had a big expensive desktop computer I built myself (to Bruce Thompson's specs), then for a trip I bought an Acer Aspire laptop with WinXP at Bruce's suggestion.
About two years ago I wanted to try out Win10 so I bought a cheap CHEAP Lenovo laptop on sale for like $99 and added a docking station plus a large screen TV as a monitor. Didn't expect much, just wanted to explore the new OS. Like you, I'm not a power user, but was pleasantly surprised to find out this cheap little machine does everything I need it to do (mostly use it for trading) and now it is my main machine, faster, smaller and lighter to carry with me than the Acer. I love it (after disabling Cortana and other intrusive aspects of Win10) -- easy to disconnect and reconnect to the docking station. Don't expect to ever buy another desktop.
I don't care for HPs, but still happy with my 9 yr old Acer Aspire -- it as an excellent machine.

PS Bruce may be gone but he is not forgotten. RIP, Bruce, and thanks for all your help on this thread over the years.
Good one, Porgie. Bob would have enjoyed that!
Newly
So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I remember him fondly during the years he was active here on Ihub. He was way too young to have the thread of his life cut short. But things are as they are and crossing over into the unknown is the natural fate of every living thing. We do not mourn his passing because we know he has moved on to other things -- we mourn for ourselves, for the loss of his presence among us and for that reminder of our own mortality.
Rest in peace, Bob. You earned it!

So sorry to hear of your loss of your much-loved Lucky. I remember well when my 15-yr-old Sheltie Brandy went back in 2005. I was heartbroken at the loss of a cherished member of my family, as I imagine you are feeling now. I have never quite understood why God gave us the dog as Man's Best Friend, then gave them such a short lifetime and Man such a long one. Perhaps it was so that we could have many Best Friends within our lifetime. I like to think so. . .

The terms "stupid" and "ignorant" are not synonymous.
Today as a species we are smarter than ever. . .and doubtless more ignorant! Amazing how an abundance of ready information on all subjects creates the opposite effect from what one would reasonably expect!

Part of the problem is that psychologically people tend to put more credence in the written word whether in a newspaper or on the Net. It relates to the old saw "believe half of what you see and none of what you hear". In this day and age we could add "and question everything you read!"

In reply to your post re the generation gap on the Q&A board, I once read an article where the writer was knocking the younger generation as being out of control, immoral, disrespectful, unethical, etc. I thought it was written by a contemporary writer until I got to the end and discovered it was written by a Roman in the last days of Rome! I guess the progression of the generations and their attitudes to one another don't change much -- the older generation always seems to feel the younger generation isn't up to snuff.
My own theory as to why that is is that we become imprinted in early childhood with the values of the world we are born into. As we grow older we express ourselves, often rebelling against those values and establishing new ones for our own generation. We continue to grow and change through about middle age, when it begins to become more difficult to adjust to new attitudes and mores that are constantly moving further and further away from those with which we were originally imprinted.
As we grow old we begin to complain about how the world is changing for the worse as we become less and less able to change with it until ultimate we give up trying and become alienated from a world we no longer understand or can conform to.
That seems to be pretty much the progression of life and the reason for differences of attitudes we have at different stages of our lives. This is the generation gap.
Newly
Without including a link to the article to which you refer, your post doesn't make much sense to me. I gather the article was about news and fake news on the Net. In that regard (if that is what you are referring to) I have a friend who is not dumb by any means (a classical composer) but who believes everything she reads on alternative news sites. When I question her as to why she just says 'well, I certainly don't believe anything the government says!' I think that attitude has become very prevalent in today's world. Distrust of the establishment.
Personally I find it hard to know what to believe these days with all the various "takes" on any given news item -- they all contain a modicum of truth then add their own spin according to their own agenda. What's a body to do?

I'm not sure, but I think "offsetting lots" is referring to which of your existing positions you are selling when you have several lots of the same issue purchased at different times. Most brokers default is first in/first out to designate which position you are selling, but the trader generally may advise the broker he/she wishes to designate which lot he/she wishes to sell regardless of the order in which the lots were bought.
Newly
Yes, I suspect you're right. May be best to dump Chrome and go back to Firefox, though it's like closing the barn door after the horse has left, LOL.

Hi, Larry. So that problem was bothering you as well? I've tried to be so careful with my personal information, disabled the cloud, disabled every setting I could find that might compromise my info, and now I find out Chrome has been keeping it all along! Oh, for those carefree days of WinXP computing. . .
Newly
Tnx ElisComing. That worked. Didn't realize it was the browser that kept the info, assumed it was Win10 (maybe that does too, who knows?). Changed those advanced Chrome settings and hopefully that is an end to the autofill. Still wondering just where else my personal information might be being kept besides in the files of those Equifax hackers (yes, I was one of the 145 million Americans whose info was stolen). . .
Newly
Tnx for the suggestion, Koog. I do that regularly but it doesn't do it.

Today I was filling out a form online and all I typed was my first name and the entire form filled in automatically with my full name, address, email addie, etc.
Does anyone know where Win10 stores this info and how I can get rid of it. I thought I'd locked everything down pretty well, but apparently not.
TIA

Hi, Larry. Nice to hear from you. Trust all is well with you. Probably a good idea to run CCleaner as you do. I don't know why I don't run it more often, I should.
Newly
Guess it has been longer than I thought since I ran CCleaner, LOL. Did so now and it deleted all those files I was worried about. Thanks for the reminder sharpshorts. Must remember to run it every week.
Newly
Thanks for the info PMS Witch.
Newly
Thanks for the reply, Sharpshorts. I have used CCleaner for years. Good program for cleaning up crap. Haven't used it for a while so I'll run it now and see if it deletes those .temp files I mentioned. If not, I'll try your "Run" command. . .
Newly
When I began using Win10, I decided not to save any of my private files on the computer due to the ability of MS and Google etc to spy. So, I save everything now to a password protected thumb drive. I recently noticed that Win10 saves many temporary files in Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp with odd combinations of numbers and letters but most end with .temp. When I select one of these files a popup asks me what app I want to open it with and I never know what to enter.
Anyway, my question is, is it safe to delete all the files with the .temp ending in this file?
TIA

Well, at least it sounds like it was peaceful and pain-free. Ten days elapsed between his last post and yours re his passing. How sad to think that he had become so isolated from the world that no one missed him for so long, and then his passing was only discovered through the concern of virtual strangers.
I suppose that happens to many seniors, forgotten by the world, left to molder away their final years on this earth alone and discarded until a merciful death draws its dark curtain over their lives. So sad. . .
No one should die alone like that. Poor Walk.
