Mornin all.

I'm having a problem with my old Acer WinXP machine. A few days ago Avast advised me to download an update to the program. I did so and now Avast will not run at all. System Restore does not work. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware in Safe Mode and they found nothing so I eliminated an infection as the cause of this problem.

I suspect a corrupt MS or User file. Any thoughts on how to check this?

I tried a clean install of Avast, and it shows in my program files but will not run. I tried starting it in services.msc (where it is listed as Automatic) but I then got the message that the IDSAgent would not start due to Error 1053 (a timeout error). One suggested fix was to go into the registry and increase the timeout time. When I did that my computer refused to upload windows at all so I went into Safe Mode again and reversed that and then windows loaded just fine.

As of right now, I have no antivirus software running at all, and that makes me uncomfortable. Any suggestions? TIA
