I'm not sure, but I think "offsetting lots" is referring to which of your existing positions you are selling when you have several lots of the same issue purchased at different times. Most brokers default is first in/first out to designate which position you are selling, but the trader generally may advise the broker he/she wishes to designate which lot he/she wishes to sell regardless of the order in which the lots were bought.
