Really?
I'm going to need a barbiturate board soon.
Perfect. Then we're all set. You choose for your birthday.
Lobo... P.S. Which is your birthday month, the one I gave you or the one I took away? Waaah. We'll work something out if it's the one I took away. This list isn't written in stone... YET!
Leaving now. See you around.
I screwed up and was posting to myself again but you'll seet his, I hope.
I haven't, trust me. They're on the unofficial list. I'm just moving things around. I'll PM you the full one.
Okay, I'll put the full year up now.....
P.S. I'd really like another shot myself since I didn't know that was going to be my one and only. I would never have picked that wine as my only recommendation for a tasting. It was simply an easy wine to understand so I chose it as the first in a series I had in mind.
Look in ibox. I took it upon myself to give Derf your spot since you gave yours to me and he's anxious!!!! By the time yours comes up, you'll want to do it. I just know it.
This moderator stuff if for the birds.
You made those up.
We're making the list! I'm trying to get you moved up the line in place of someone who isn't that interested.
7 movies:
1. It's all Gone Pete Tong - could not get past first five minutes.
2. Imaginary Heroes - some good moments but basically... well, it was disposable. 2.5/5
3. 1900 - Holy mackerel, what a mess. It's like Bertolucci picked names out of a hat instead of hiring a casting director. I was expecting Bruce Lee to jump out onto the screen as Rigoletto in a handlebar mustache. 2.5/5 because it was fascinating as a curiosity.
4. Lawrence of Arabia - very good movie but some goofy stuff because of when it was made. Anthony Quinn as an Arab warlord chews up the scene, as usual. He is not a great actor but I've loved him in some roles regardless, for instance... as Gauguin in Lust for Life. Anyway, the voice Alec Guinness used for the prince was silly. He sounded like Peter Sellers doing a spoof on something. Omar Sharif was wonderful. O'Toole as Lawrence was great, for the most part. In the end, while going mad, he looked more like someone from a silent movie being overly dramatic but hey, it's a hard role to play. The scenes are magnificent. 3.75/5
5. The Up Side of Anger - no reason for this movie to be made except to marvel at how amazing Joan Allen looked. Without her I wouldn't have cared about one single thing or another character. She wasn't even that great, just hot. 2.5/5
6. Miracle (just saw it) - WOW! I LOVED this movie. Kurt Russel was perfect, amazing and I always love Clarkson (Station Agent). The boys on the team were all utterly believable and I was on the edge of my chair for the last fifteen minutes of the film even knowing the outcome. Loved this movie, though it wasn't a perfectly made movie, some things were left out that I would have wanted to know but still... 4/5
7. The Great Santini (saw it last night)... it was okay. It was just okay with some interesting moments but I'd not have missed much had I never seen it. 3/5
SoxFan, would you do me a favor and let Low have your slot on the wine board? We're having tastings for which people choose a wine in order of appearance and I know you don't drink or like wine. Pwetty Pweathe?
YOU ARE PICKING A WINE, RAZ. GET USED TO THE IDEA!!!
No way, you're picking a wine!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Five Smarter Sips
1. Champagne: At 100 calories, ringing in the New Year with this traditional toasting beverage won’t wreak havoc on your waistline.
2. Wine Spritzer: With 3 ounces of wine and 3 ounces of club soda, wine spritzers top out at about 60 calories and zero grams of fat.
3. Wine: The typical glass of wine weighs in at 100 calories. Opt for red and you’ll get a healthy dose of disease-fighting chemicals called flavonols, too.
4. Beer: Light or regular, a bottle of beer is a much better option than most cocktails. “Drink from the bottle instead of the larger servings from draft beers,” says Gidus. Regular beer has 150 calories to the bottle, while light has about 100.
5. Vodka (or Gin) & Soda: Most mixers with 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits and diet or club soda have less than 100 calories and no fat.

Why thank you!
I'm still drinking the wines. Bought a few samples to test for what I thought might work for each subsequent tasting. I just had a French Chardonnay that was pleasant. I will compile a list of the wines I liked and why and send it to you when I get through the case - lol. The notes may be incomprehensible!
I like the idea of each person getting a shot at recommending a wine, however, I certainly would NOT have picked the nouveau had I known it was my one and only shot at it. My goodness, it is far, FAR, FAR from the wine I would have recommended as my one and only. It simply seemed like a perfect introduction because of its fruity simplicity. Oh well. You are on the list, btw. Let me go see where you are...... right back. Oooops, you are not among the first 12 to show on the board and I haven't gotten past 15 yet but if you stick around long enough we will get to you. I'm thinking maybe every three weeks might be better than once a month if we're to do it this way. That way more people get to go. If it really flies, we'll go to once every two weeks and so on. We don't need to show for each and every tasting. Right?
I know that first line is a joke but I really hate power stuff. My suggestion wasn't that I control everything, only that I be consulted.
PDC has the 15th of January, you do the 12th of February, Raz is next, there are other people who now should get to choose, too, if we are to be fair. There's Chu, Derf, Lobo, Junk, Susie, I hope Low will get his butt over here, and a string of other people I'd never met.
My complaint was that I spent a lot of time and money thinking I was going to set up a tasting sequence from light and simple to more complex, then to slightly pricier but since that's shot, we may as well make a list of dates and people who are interested. Down the road I'd like to have a bit more control - maybe by 2007 - lol.
I will make a list from 1 through 12 in ibox. I really hate conflict.
Those were the good old days. Please come back.
You hate it when we get uppity, don't you.
I don't want to contribute to anybody not liking the board. I like it too. That's why I've kept my mouth shut. Sorry, PDC.
I really didn't want to get into this. It's somehow rather silly to me but your post #163 is the first mention of some kind of order. It was delivered as a proclamation. I was busy with end of the semester stuff so once I set the date and wine for first tasting, I asked Raz to watch over things til I could be more present. I know him well and am in touch with him so he was my logical choice. If you read post #81, this is how you presented your interest in the board to me. Consequently, I bought 150$ worth of wine to try out for some logical sequence of tastings. I'd been trying them out when I noticed you setting up rules as to how subsequent tastings would proceed. I really am not interested in conflict or demanding that I at least be considered but you did say that you were not interested in being the moderator or in making any decisions here. That is why I took the position. I offered it to you again and you declined. I didn't ask to be the moderator, I accepted the post.
With what time I had during finals and grading I chose a wine for the first tasting and bought a dozen other bottles that I thought would make for an interesting sequence. I made sure they were all affordable and accessible. By the time I was free to participate more I had no idea where you were coming from. People did complain, btw. I simply did not have it in me at that point to do so. I really am not interested in imposing my ideas or will. Just thought you might want to know how I saw it. I am simply perplexed by the whole thing. I would not even make a decision without conferring with you, Raz, PDC and the people who frequent the board for that matter.
P.S. And I found it odd that you pop in an hour before the tasting and leave, then set a date for the next one and say you can't make that one but instead of simply changing the date since you knew so far in advance you set up the next date and give the 15th to PDC. It's all just very weird to me. Very, very weird.
Good objective.
I don't remember a popular consent and nobody asked me. I must admit to being a tad irritated.
These rules and dates were set long ago, by a far wiser race than ours.
Oh, I'm the last person you want supervising anything. I send kids back to their parents as if they'd been brought up by wolves. Just let him out. He'll be fine.
I hope Merlot doesn't really suck. It's 50% of the blend we made this year. It can be terrific and I welcome one. How's things, PDC?
A friend sent me this. I think it would make for an interesting tasting:
I wanted to mention this cava (Spanish champagne wannabe) to you and your Wine board pals. I heard about Cristalino from some wine maven on a morning news show. He said that it was easily as good as many sparkling wines that are much more expensive.
I paid only $7.99 for a bottle and expected it to be pretty darned bad. Instead, it was pretty darned good. Perhaps someone on the board might want to try it sometime and comment.
At some point down the road, a champagne/sparkling wine might be a good wine for a tasting.

Aw come on. It'll be New Year soon. Besides, everyone has a hit list.
Me too.
Thank you?
Hey, let's think optimistically. It's going to be a happy and prosperous year. It is!!! Girlscout's (is that two words or one) honor.
HAPPY NEW YEAR?
Goats Do Roam in Villages from South Africa - 2003 Red. Wasn't that impressed when I first opened it. Had a glass and put it in the frig. Next day had a glass and thought it was pretty good. But the night after that - very, VERY nice. Lots of black fruit, some kind of dark berryish flavors (boysenberry and/or blackberry and/or blueberry type of thing) and coffee or cocoa. Wasn't in a position to pay that close attention, company here, but it was an odd blend, odd result at least. Good tannins, not harsh and just enough oak. Very rich and rather serious complex of well integrated flavors. Unusual fruit and that was a nice surprise for such an inexpensive wine. Earthy, too. Am buying more. It was only 13$. NEEDS TO BREATHE A LOT for some reason. I'd even open it in the AM if I were drinking it at night.
Coppola Sirah/Shiraz - 2003 - Very berryish and fruity, beautiful color (need to have it again before commenting further but it was nice), both this and the prior really needed to breathe before I could appreciate what they were about. More and more I'm thinking wine needs more time to breathe than I always believed. I think you need a decanter with a broad base so lots of surface area is in contact with air. Have a Cappola Zin waiting, maybe will have some tonight.
Edit, thought you were talking about Zero Effect. Bird Cage takes a bit too, though.
Uh huh. It's an absolute must see, unless you've seen it and didn't like it. Then dismiss this post.
I posted on it here like six months ago and didn't get any bites. Then tried again and still no bites. Don't know if I'm happy to find that people do love it or sad that nobody reads my posts - lol!!!
You have to see the 1978 original, La Cage aux folles. That is one hell of a funny movie. I wouldn't even bother with the remake the original was such a work of art.
Does not ring a bell. I'll put it in the queue. TX.
I have to go to IMDB to see if I saw Local Hero. I've been known to come home with stuff I've seen, much to my husband's dismay.
Wicker Man is a terrific movie. I'd give it a 4.5/5 because it's so well made and beautiful, doesn't pander, just an amazing film.
I see you loved Zero Effect, too - it's in my top twenty, as you well know. I so loved that movie. Am surprised it never really took off. A must see in my opinion. Most in my top twenty are cultish.
I can't tell if it was me fading from having had so much fun with my company or if the movie faded but dear lord, I haven't laughed that hard over a movie in ages. The woman who did Animala was PERFECT, wasn't she? The whole cast was unbelievable. The sequence of everyone converging at the cabin!!!!! And the dinner scene. I have to see it again because I can't be sure if the movie really was too long or my attention span too short by that point after some wine and good company.
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra: 3.5/5 but had they been able to keep it as fresh and right on the mark as they nailed it in the first half hour or so, it would be higher. SciFi Spoof. Some of it was amazing, hilarious, brilliant even. For a bit my friends and I were screaming with laugher, but then it grew a bit old. WELL worth the beginning. I wonder if you had to have smoked pot at least a few dozen times in your life to really appreciate this one. Hmmm.
