then all of their weak strategies
Please elaborate on the weak strategies you refer to in your post. Are your referring to the 'tic-toc' strategy, the platform strategy, the marketing strategy, which ones? Please clarify which strategies you are refering to and and why you think they are weak. If you don't respond, I'll assume you don't know.

wbmw,
His tag is rather telling. I guess he will have to get burned to learn about INTC stock.
Snow
Guess your chart is missing a lot of information about Intel in 2007 that might lead you to a different decision. Good luck!
Snow
I was going to point this out but you did first, thank you. The last thing we need is to start a thread of speculative comparisons based on a benchmark of an unknown cpu from and unknown source. I could see that getting pretty ugly.
Snow
Well, if you can't win on price/performance and performance/watt, then you need to cheat. AMD is so slimy this way.
Snow
Well it's a good thing we have tech writers like you around to keep the tech world sane and add a counter balance to this BS. :) Appreciate your posts Wouter.
Snow
IF true, 95 watts for a quad core part is impressive.
Snow
NVM, the quad core design will provide a significant boost. Just needed to think about it a bit more. Comparing C2D and K8L is somewhat of an apples to oranges comparison.
Snow
The Droids will dismiss this by claiming Splinter worked for Intel and is bias towards Intel and simply spreading FUD.
Snow
Either AMD has a "Core 2 Like" surprise up their sleeve or Hector is in complete denial. Unfortunately we're only hearing PR and there's no substance. BTW, I find it iteresting that Intel's NGMA beat AMD's K8 by 40% on average and now AMD is using the same figure for K8L. If true, it would imply that K8L is approx. 80% faster than K8. Does anyone see any architectural changes that would enable an 80% improvement over the existing K8?
Snow
What's that smell? Is that Hector crapping his pants? :)
Snow
Alan,
I don't understand what you're saying. Do you think AMD will keep the price at $459? If so, I understand your reasoning but I don't know if there are other factors (i.e. Dell) that would force them to lower the price to compete.
Snow
Interesting, AMD is pricing the X2 6000+ at $459 which is between the E6600 at $316 and the E6700 at $530. Considering the X2 6000+ cannot compete with the E6700 and the E6600 beats it in 13 out of 22 or 60% of the benchmarks, I doubt AMD can hold the $459 price. Look for them to drop the price about $143 to $150 and feed the press with more "price war" BS.
Snow
AMD needs to get some Barcelona benchmarks out there.
I don't know if that will help. Remember, we will probably only see Barcelona in server products this year not in desktop or mobile.
Snow
wbmw,
I get the impression that the author of this article doesn't understand that AMD had to lower their prices to be competitive with Intel. It appears that they don't understand that AMD was charging higher prices for lower performing parts. Intel doesn't have to respond and should stick to their scheduled price changes for April.
Snow
It would be difficult for them to avoid the "distraction factor." Integrating two companies with different cultures is very difficult. I imagine the prior ATI employees are probably the ones making compromises to fit into the AMD culture, but that's the soft stuff. From a technical and business perspective, AMD's now responsible for future discrete and integrated GPU designs. Additionally, AMD now has to manage the foundry suppliers ATI brought with them. It's not going to be easy.
Snow
Now AMD gets to learn what it's like to compete with a smaller, "scrappier", competitor. Love it!

Chart on page 4.
Snow
smooth,
Not precisely, but this chart gives you an idea.
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~udbnw/amd-intc2.pdf
Specifically, look at how the Core 2 and Pentium 2000 bar graphs expand from quarter to quarter in 2007. By the end of the year, AMD will only be competing with the NetBurst architecture in the Celeron line. I anticipate Barcelona will change the server side of things but I don't see it making any real financial impact in the desktop or mobile markets. 2007 is going to be tough on AMD.
Snow
AMD's record unit marketshare last quarter shows that the market is not shifting back to Intel quite the reverse whilst P4 makes up the majority of Intel's product line
That was Q4. Intel introduced the E4300 in large volumes this quarter and is starting to replace a lot of P4 SKU's with Conroe based products. If you want proof of the volumes, look at the recent Disti posting from ResellerMike. There are quite a few E4300's in the disti, I can only imagine the volumes for OEM's.
Snow
If Intel does this, I would guess that it would only be for server products and you wouldn't see mobile or desktop for a couple quarters later. IF Intel releases a 45nm server product in 1H07, it might take a lot of steam out of the K8L paper launch.
Snow
That's what happens when you don't have a good sample population. If you go to the Fool bulletin boards and sort by number of posts, AMD is towards the top of the list. Do you think that affects the poll? :)
Snow
It looks like they put the fans at the end of the card instead of on top. I wonder how much space that saves in terms of the thickness of the card. I think they had to switch their design because mobo layouts for dual graphic cards don't leave much room between the cards when inserted into their PCIe slots. It also looks like they had to make room for heat pipes.
Snow
Grr,
He simply gave you an alternate reason for pulling in the schedule. It was pretty easy to follow what he was saying.
Snow
Damn, look at all those E4300's.
Snow
I think you're confused with K2.
Snow
AMD: "Merely a flesh wound!" Hobling around with no arms or legs. "Merely a flesh wound!" :)
Snow
Easy, the first link is reality based on real data. The second link is a promise from a new hire AMD executive. He's probably being reprimanded as we speak.
Snow
Or is it a K9? We'll should be able to judge for ourselves in a few (or more) months. :)
Snow
What? You mean Intel partnered with Microsoft on Vista and the AMD FUD is wrong? You mean Vista will provide just as good if not a better experience on Intel products? Boy, and here I was thinking about buying an AMD processor because AMD said Vista would run better on their product. :)
Snow
Looks like AMD is playing it smart and keeping with the original naming conventions (i.e. XTX, XT, etc) No reason to cause confusion. Are they're any previews that give insight into whether or not it will retake the performance crown from NVIDIA?
Snow
Mas,
I don't know much about the R600. Is it the complete graphics card or just the GPU? If just the GPU, will it be used for the Radeon XT 2000 series (assuming 2000 because their latest and greatest is the 1950). FYI - I have two XT 1900 XT's in my box.
Snow
mmoy,
If I remember correctly, it was AMD that started the trend of releasing server processors first then destop and mobile. I believe AMD started this trend with Opteron and Intel followed that trend with Woodcrest. Prior to Opteron and Woodcrest, Intel used to release server products last because they needed extra time for additional validation and testing.
Snow
I didn't know that, thanks for the info.
Snow
Let me see if I follow your logic
IBM released Power PC based products for Xbox 360 and Wii on time therefore IBM wasn't responsible for the delay of the PS3 eventhough it is based on an entirely different technology (Cell). From what I read, it wasn't just the Blue Ray issue, it was horrible yeilds on Cell. But, I could be wrong and I'm ok with that. It doesn't negate my original point that TTM is extremely important.
Snow
Like I told Hans, I'm focused on the TTM issues. Sure PS3 is doing good now, but it could've done a much better had they release it on time. Basically, Sony enables MS to maintain their foothold in the gaming console market.
Once again TTM, TTM... This drives the tech industry.
Snow
And how late was PS3 to the market? And how much money did Sony lose to MS XBOX 360 sales during that time? Can you say thanks IBM?
Snow
Ah, I see you're a day trader. I don't have time for that type of micro management and risk. Good luck.
Snow
Hans,
You missed the point of my post, I'm merely pointing out the importance of having such technology at the right time and right place. IBM always seems to be a day late and a dollar short.
Snow
Damn enter button. I think the Inq is getting ahead of itself and trying to make news. In their CC Intel did not mention what quarter it would release Penryn, it only stated "sometime in 2H07" and they never mentioned the other products the Inq referenced only Penryn.
