If I remember correctly, it was AMD that started the trend of releasing server processors first then destop and mobile. I believe AMD started this trend with Opteron and Intel followed that trend with Woodcrest. Prior to Opteron and Woodcrest, Intel used to release server products last because they needed extra time for additional validation and testing.
