The question for investors is whether the mindset described in your post is unique to GS or is endemic to the IB industry as a whole
Thanks, my friend.
Re ECYT: I can never resist taking profits when a small biotech makes a parabolic move. Most of the time I'm OK with it, but it looks like I left a good 20% on the table with ECYT. Incredible.
If you've still got FBC, hang on to it!
ECYT: Don't mean to brag, but: #msg-71692451
Had a decent-sized position, out this morning +46%!
This could be the prelude to a nasty whistleblower lawsuit
As with 99.9% of shareholder class action suits, it will go absolutely nowhere and have no effect.

anything i think demeans president, Obama, is just fine with me even if it makes me look stupid
Charlie- I'm very interested in your informed opinion about the news story posted here- #msg-73107372 , entitled "After quakes, Ohio plans tough gas-drilling rules."
I live in central Ohio and this has garnered quite a bit of attention since the entire fracking debate is ongoing here, unfortunately mixed up with politics
(OT: I sometimes think that I'm one of the last people in the U.S. who believes that while there may be Democratic and Republican statistics, there cannot be Democratic and Republican facts, any more than the number "6" or the letter "G" or the amount of hydrogen atoms in a molecule of water has an intrinsically partisan component.)
My uninformed, instinctive, natural-born skeptic's response to the claim that fracking causes earthquakes has always been, "Don't be ridiculous." However, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources seems to be saying that in some cases this may be true.
TIA. - Gary
Yes, the answer was so simple, so obvious.
I was astounded that he could even ask that question, and I realized that he must represent many millions of Americans who were genuinely puzzled by the same thing, and will be genuinely puzzled when the latest round of horrific acts of revenge break out in Afghanistan.
Why do they hate us? We are good.
Thank you, Stephanie.
I wrote that poem spontaneously as I was typing a reply to you.
Out of sheer sadness and a deep sense of despair, I did something that I haven't done in a long time: I wound up sending it to John Kerry, my Senator Sherrod Brown, and to the President.
I of course received three automated email "Thank you for your input!" responses.
What can we do, things are going so wrong, the repulsive hate and ignorance from our own people; a line from the little-known poet Kenneth Patchen keeps echoing in my mind:
"My program? Let us all weep together."
piss on their dead bodies and tape it,burn their Holy Book, kill their children while they sleep:they hate our freedom
Great trade, best of luck to you in the future.
We've got a consecutive 3-trading-day period with a minimum average closing price of $1; only 27 days to go.
I could be wrong on this, but I think that the DOJ has a list of states with a history of voter discrimination, and they closely monitor and get involved with those states.
Texas is on it.
Too mild, needs some spice.
IMHO this will be remembered as the beginning of the end of the entire insane fiasco. When the horrendous Amiriyah air-raid shelter bombing happened during the first Gulf War I felt the same way.
but 20%??? Where why from who??
glens0- FBC will not continue to go up every single day. The market doesn't work that way.
Did you establish a target sell price before you bought?
Traditionally, a 20% gain on a short-term buy is regarded as a great trade. If you bought at .88, a 20% gain would be about $1.05 - $1.06.
It's also hitting me today like a punch in the gut.
Thoughts of My Lai.
I wish our national village was not so large.
If we could all come out this morning,
out into an open space in the center,
sit in the open space together
and look at this clearly.
No parties and no labels.
Just this. Looked at clearly. Together.
What does this mean?
What are we doing?
What have we become?
To sit in an open space together and look at this clearly.
U.S. soldier kills 16 Afghan civilians
[IMO this is it. All timetables will change, we will be leaving Afghanistan shortly.]

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- An American soldier left his base in Afghanistan and went from house to house in two villages, killing 16 people in their homes, Afghan officials told CNN Sunday.
The dead include nine children and three women, plus five wounded, President Hamid Karzai said.
"The murdering of innocent people intentionally by an American soldier is an act of terror that is unforgivable," Karzai said.
The incident looks likely to inflame tensions still further between foreign troops and Afghan civilians, many of whom were enraged by the burning of Qurans by American troops last month.
American officials from President Barack Obama down called the burning an accident and apologized for it, but riots left dozens dead, including six American troops. Hundreds more Afghans were wounded.
Obama has been briefed on Sunday's shootings, two administration officials said.
"The soldier goes to the villages of Alokozai and Barakzai and attacks four houses, in which he kills 16 civilians and wounded others," said Haji Agha Lali, a member of the provincial council who said he had just been to the area.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force confirmed that a soldier had gone off base and fired on civilians before turning himself in, but did not say how many victims there had been.
There has been confusion about the number of casualties since the shooting in Kandahar province, eastern Afghanistan, with different sources offering different numbers.
Capt. Justin Brockhoff of ISAF said there had been "multiple" casualties and that the injured Afghans were being treated in ISAF facilities.
ISAF commander Gen. John Allen said the "deeply appalling incident in no way represents the values of ISAF and coalition troops or the abiding respect we feel for the Afghan people."
"I am absolutely dedicated to making sure that anyone who is found to have committed wrongdoing is held fully accountable," he said.
Acting U.S. Ambassador James Cunningham said his country was "saddened by this violent act against our Afghan friends."
"We deplore any attack by a member of the U.S. Armed Forces against innocent civilians," he said in a video statement, assuring "the people of Afghanistan that the individual or individuals responsible for this terrible act will be identified and brought to justice."
Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, said American troops were "under tremendous pressure in Afghanistan," but that "no one can condone or make any suggestion that what (the service member) did was right because it was absolutely wrong."
Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the United States was "on the right track to get out of Afghanistan just as soon as we can."
Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services committee, said: "It is one of those things that you cannot explain except to extend your deepest sympathy to those victims and see that justice is done."
He was speaking on Fox News Sunday.
The Taliban claimed that 50 people had been killed, but the Islamist militia regularly exaggerates casualty figures.
They disputed ISAF's version of events, saying several soldiers went on a raid that resulted in dozens of deaths.
But Maj. Jason Waggoner, another ISAF spokesman, said: "The civilian casualties were not the result of any operations. The soldier was acting on his own. After the incident he returned to the compound and turned himself in."
Brockhoff said officials do not yet have a motive for the shooting, which is under investigation by both NATO and Afghan officials.
Civilian casualties as a result of action by the NATO-led international coalition have long caused anger in Afghanistan, adding pressure on international forces to withdraw.
The international force has said avoiding civilian casualties is a high priority.
"My command's mission is to protect the civilian people of Afghanistan," Gen. Allen said last month. "I take very seriously the loss of every Afghan life. We will continue to do all we can to ensure the safety of the Afghan population."
The number of ISAF-caused civilian deaths decreased by nearly 17% from 2010 to 2011, the coalition force said in its December monthly report.
if Iran has to give full access then Israel should have to
I bought into FBC on a friends recommendation at .88, watched it keep going up every day and was wondering why. I was just about to ask the board why but you answered that question.
I can't back up these facts, I got this in an email today
Charlie-You of course perfectly understood my rather basic point: business and government are the same entity. Anyone arguing differently is very naïve.
While the point is basic, and to me self-evident, to precisely unravel the skein of co-dependency—if not identicalness— is virtually impossible. And it’s this impossibility that has enabled various entities for many, many decades to throw mud at their opponents: you got help and I didn’t, you’re “funded” by the government and I’m not, I’m “private” and you’re not, on and on.
Specifically, speaking of the great industrialists, while you admit that “the US gov't provided the framework in which they could operate and preserve the wealth that they created” you’re greatly minimizing its importance. Not to mention that the wealth-creation itself could not have occurred without the “framework!”
You seem to be a great defender of capitalism, as am I, but seem to have a problem with a consummate capitalist like T.B. getting some public money to ultimate benefit the public and, yes, also benefit himself.
For me to engage you in a specific oil or NG debate would be like trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs, and I’m not going there!
Perhaps as a side not, perhaps not: I’m deliberately refraining from entering the quagmire of arguing specific political parties or politicians. You’re a big boy and if you want to enter that swamp, then you can. Even if you do, using loaded phrases like “Obama and his friends” just obfuscates the issues. Again, this is much more your bailiwick than mine, but I believe the administration is merely saying that more time is needed to review the project, especially regarding the Ogallala Aquifer. As an experienced, knowledgeable environmentalist, in the best sense of the word, I would think that you'd be in favor of this.
Kindly,
Gary

Doral Financial Corp (NYSE: DRL), Flagstar Bancorp Inc (NYSE: FBC), and iPass Inc (NASDAQ: IPAS) are some stocks which have gone up in the recent months on the back of a multitude of factors including favorable corporate developments, better earnings etc. However, all of them have a common factor - insiders have turned net buyers in these stocks in the recent months. In fact, these stocks are perfect examples of how insiders can potentially bring up investment profile of companies.
Puerto Rico based regional bank holding company Doral Financial Corp (NYSE: DRL) currently trades at $1.52 with a weekly gain of 9 per cent but a more impactful time bracket is the last quarter during which, the stock moved up an astounding 123 per cent. In the meantime, insiders have turned buyers from sellers. Of course, the underlying factor for this turnaround in insider sentiment was better than expected financial performance for the latest quarter. I have mentioned it in my previous articles that regional banks stand a better chance at value creation than their bigger counterparts and DRL has just demonstrated this. The icing on the cake is that despite the recent appreciation in the price, the stock trades at a forward earnings multiple of just 3.
Similarly, Flagstar Bancorp Inc (NYSE: FBC) has gained 68 per cent during the last quarter. It crossed its 200 day moving average earlier this week and has been moving up since then with weekly gain of 32 per cent. Insiders are usually active in this stock and they were net buyers in the last six months. It has certainly helped as a lead indicator to sophisticated investors in making buying decisions at lower valuations. After all, it helps to know when the chairman is buying the stock in shiploads.

It just doesn't make sense that you would release this PR and "waste" money on this when you could have slipped it in the earings PR
Or the necklace PR or the bracelet PR or...
Vin- The general thrust of my comments—admittedly propounded in my usual smart-ass style—is that anyone like you who has the credentials and position that you have was not given those credentials or position but had to earn them with time, work, money, dedication.
And the vast majority of those professionals, unless they have some personal issues or have deliberately chosen to work in a lower paying situation, are rightfully enjoying a fairly comfortable lifestyle.
The us gov't did not subsidize development of the infrastructure for the auto and gasoline industry other than to build roads and part of the motivation for that was for defense purposes. It was obvious to everyone with a brain that petroleum was more advantageous than whale oil, coal, and horses for transportation in the early 1900s; however, the govt didn't fund Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Schwab...
Oh, I remember that day in July quite well.
I had the brilliant idea to double my position at .99 because I was sure that it could not go any lower than that.
Great close, actually a bit better than I was expecting.
There's going to be some down days, but overall we've definitely turned the corner.
Apology: I was being facetious about scientists in my last post, sorry if it didn't read well. Got a PM suggesting as much.
LAO: In the coming weeks and months, I expect a fair amount of see-sawing back and forth as traders—including all the great ones on this board—buy and sell.
IMHO it's going a lot higher than this, eventually.
Best of luck!
That sounds just like the person who would work their butt off to better their life.
I will hold for six more months and see if we hit 1.50 PPS
