If you run CCleaner and you have Microsoft Security Essentials, be sure to un-check the MS malware box.

You were most appreciated! Thank you!!!
Thanks...
Flobewan held my hand.
Probably wanted to see a mental breakdown, up close and personal. LOL!
Hi Newly2b...
if you have a couple minutes to spare/waste and need a chuckle, go to the Computer Learning board, starting at 12:51 yesterday afternoon. You can follow my stress level:
http://investorshub.advfn.com/Computer-Learning-470/
I gained 1000 pcpitstop points after changing out the hard drive to a Western Digital 10,000 RPM velociraptor.
Also removed the 2, one GB sticks and replace them with 4, two GB sticks quadrupling my memory.
Then loaded Windows 7.
The help I got was Computer Learning board was priceless!
I was a little surprised that quadrupling my memory to 8 GB didn't have a greater impact on my pcpitstop score.
Seems like the biggest jump in my score came from the video test and I didn't swap out the video card.

I am so sorry...
on the initial start up with the new hard drive and memory, I only plugged in the power, mouse and keyboard as I wanted to get the operating system installed and running properly before I connected everything else.
Amazing how beautiful everything sounds with the speakers plugged it.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI...
I wonder why I don't have sound?
Something in the BIOS or is there a sound driver I need?
I have the Adobe Flash Player and Java successfully installed.
This day sure is whipping my brain around...
Not sure how to get into the BIOS. Google can help. Just not sure what I will be changing when I get there.
I still need to download the Adobe Flash Player and Java.
This is the driver it told me to find...
http://lowerthought.wordpress.com/2010/07/31/how-to-enable-amd-cool-n-quiet-in-windows-7/
I downloaded the zip file from ASUS, then searched it on Google to see what it was about.
This answer tells me I don't need to download it, just make some changes in the BIOS.
That is like a brick wall for me. Never messed with BIOS before, but then again, never did any of this stuff before.
I decided to close out those files and then I noticed it no longer is prompting me about the power management system driver. So I clicked on the prompt to back up the system.
Fortunately, I have a fairly empty 1 TB external hard drive that it suggested I use.
This back up is going very smooth. Just out of curiosity, does it think I don't have the Windows 7 installation disc??
I still think that BIOS change that I need to make will have to be done.
Just about 3/4ths done backing up.

This looks to be my next hurdle...

The power management system driver.
Let's see how this goes. Wish me luck.

Once again...
life has enabled me to prove my ignorance and I never seem to be able to sidestep the opportunity.
I went to the control panel to change the desktop appearance back to the Windows 7.
I then re-started the computer and I have the Windows 7 background.
Not sure why the background went black, but now I'm all good.
I wish I had hooked my heart up to an EKG monitor this morning when I rolled out of bed. It's days like this that I'm convinced I knocked a few days off at the end of the journey.
I need to install the power management system driver and then set up the back up whatever that means.
I will need to also get the Flash and Java.
There will be more, but this should keep me busy for a bit.
Thank you very much for all you help.
To check if "Genuine"...
http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/check-if-windows-7-is-genuine/
so I did the first step and I did get the "Activation was successful" pop up.
I also did Method 2 and went to Microsoft's validation site and it too, says I'm "Genuine".
Then I did Method 3 and yes, I am activated with "Genuine Windows".
The only fly in the ointment is my blackened desktop.
All 64 updates downloaded and I re-started computer.
The desktop is still black. I can only "assume" that is not good.
The green MSE is up and running. I can also access the internet.
I am being alerted to install my Power Management System Driver and also to Set Up Back up.
Not sure if I didn't follow a correct order or if I bought the wrong software.
Seems like the "Genuine Windows" thing is when things went bad.
How can I check to see if I'm running "Genuine Windows" software?
It gave me the updates and I have MSE. Wouldn't that mean I'm running "Genuine Windows"?
I don't know if this is my 15th post for the day or are we still on "free" week.
Ok...
it tells me I checked for updates about 43 minutes ago but never installed them.
It created a restore point and is installing them now.
39 of 64 installed so far.
Yes. It tells me I have 64 updates to install.
I'm trying to remember at what point I had to activate Windows 7...
It asked me on the installation for the product code and I put that in.
Now it is asking me to install updates.
I clicked the help me and the update option disappeared. I looked at the attention flag along the bottom and my green tented flag flying icon for MSE came back.
I re-booted to see if the blue desktop came back, but it's still black.
The green tented flag flying icon from MSE is there.
Not sure yet how to see if I still need to install updates or how to check and see if I'm "Genuine".
Uh, oh...
I've got problems.
The first thing I did was get Microsoft Security Essentials installed.
Then went to pcpitstop.
Then posted here.
Everything was all good, then my MSE turned orange.
Now it says I don't have Genuine Windows.
I tried to confirm.
I have the OEM System Builder Pack.
Did I get the wrong Windows 7 Home Premium?
My blue background on the desktop is now black.
I am posting this from the new and improved Appleriver!!!
Thank you to you and Don for your patience!
A couple questions.
How do I change the view on my monitor? Everything is small and narrow.
Also, pcpitstop could not check my internet speeds. Neither could speedtest.com. Need to update my "flash"??
I think my wife would say there has been enough screaming around here today. LOL.
You guys have been extremely helpful.
Mo is happy to hit any key, but I need to know what I'll be up against before I hit the key.
Many thanks!
I am at the 4:40 mark of this video Installing Windows
Ok, I'll check that later.
It is now asking what type of installation. Upgrade or Custom (Advanced)
The obvious pick is Custom as there is no OS in there.
Ok, did that.
Letting 'er rip as Don said.
I picked English which seemed logical.
The Install.
Setup is starting...
P.S. Replace battery for what?
Ok, did that...
Looks like the main BIOS page is open.
Memory Testing : 837584K OK (Installed memory: 8388608k)
I see the new Velociraptor drive is in SATA 1.
CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded
SATA 3 TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-S203B SB01
At the bottom of the page, it says Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP.
At the risk of sounding foolish...
I won't be able to put the Windows 7 disc in the drive until after turning the computer on.
It's electronically controlled.
Correct??
Hi Don...
I have a brandy-new, still in the package Windows 7 to install.
Just not sure how to get started with the newly installed hardware.
The old hard drive was removed, so everything starts from scratch.
I'm all plugged in, just afraid to turn it on because I've never done this before. I'm liable to get stuck with the first thing it tells me to do.
I've been Googling looking for ideas, but everyone seems to have left the old drive in and setting up off the old Windows version.

I removed the old hard drive and installed the new one. I also took out the previous 2, one GB sticks of memory and installed the 4 new, 2GB sticks.
Not sure what will happen when I turn the computer back on.
Will the computer locate the new equiptment by itself?
Do I have to configure or format something?

Operation day this afternoon...
Mutt is going to the vet, then me to the dentist.
Then Appleriver gets converted.
I'm a nervous wreck.
Thanks JK!
Happy New Year to you too!
Same here.
Merry Christmas everyone.

What's the best way to clear out all the dust that I will find inside the box?
Vacuume it?
Blow it out with compressed air?
A can of that spray gas that turns the can ice cold?
Hey Shelly...
