SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) on Wednesday will unveil a new mini-notebook in a move to gain ground in the fastest-growing PC category, which until now has been dominated by its smaller rivals.
Netbooks -- ultraportable, inexpensive laptops designed for Web browsing and light tasks -- have taken the PC market by storm this year, with smaller computer firms such as Acer Inc (2353.TW: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Asustek Computer Inc (2357.TW: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) leading the charge.
HP's sleek new Mini 1000, costing about $400, is significantly different from the company's first netbook release, launched last spring. It uses Intel Corp's (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Atom processor, and is also substantially less expensive, signaling that the price war in netbooks that some analysts have been predicting may have begun.
Although still a fraction of the overall PC market, netbooks' popularity could lead to changes in the pecking order of PC makers and cut into margins and profitability as average selling prices come down.
In the third quarter, Acer gained ground on HP and Dell Inc (DELL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), with a big assist from mini-notebooks.
According to industry tracker IDC, Acer's total shipments leaped more than 50 percent, and the company's share of the overall PC market climbed more than 3 percentage points to 12.5 percent.
HP, although still the top-selling PC maker, saw its overall market share dip slightly to 18.8 percent, and was outsold in Europe by Acer.
Analysts said the company was impacted by its delayed entry into the mini-notebook market.
Bob O'Donnell, vice president at IDC, estimates 10.8 million netbooks will ship in 2008, out of the more than 300 million overall PC shipments forecast for the year. He expects netbook shipments to jump to 20.8 million in 2009.
Carlos Montalvo, vice president of marketing in HP's managed home business, said the Mini 1000 is a superior product to the "second- and third-tier" offerings from competitors, which he said have been "over-optimized" for size and price, and lack HP's consistency and quality.
Without releasing specific numbers, Montalvo said HP's first netbook, which was targeted at the education market, was "phenomenally successful." However, he said the Mini 1000 is aiming for a broader audience.
The new netbook will start at $399 for a version running Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Windows XP, jumping to $549 for a fully loaded model. The company's first netbook, the 2133, starts at $599 and tops out at $749, features a Via chip and runs Windows Vista.
HP will also offer a Mini 1000 that runs Linux for $379, as well as a special edition designed by fashion designer Vivienne Tam for $699.
The netbooks will all feature a keyboard that is 92 percent the size of a standard keyboard, and will weigh less than three pounds (1.4 kilos).
NETBOOKS ROLE DEBATABLE
Although Montalvo views HP's netbooks as complementary products, which a consumer would own in addition to their desktop or full-sized laptop, analysts don't necessarily see it the same way.
Jayson Noland, an analyst with Robert Baird, said last week that netbooks' place in the PC universe is still undefined.
"I don't think any of us knows yet whether it's a substitute product or a complementary one," said Noland. "In some markets in a mature economy like the U.S. or Western Europe it could be complementary, and in an emerging market it could be substitute."
Also uncertain is netbooks' impact on the balance sheet. IDC's O'Donnell fully expects to see a price war in netbooks, as companies try to boost sales to make up for the low price points.
"If you're down to $300, then your profit margin goes away, so you have to make it up in volume. Their goal is all about high volume, low margin, and I think that's going to be a challenge."
Noland said both HP and Dell have been a little late to catch on to the appeal of netbooks, but he expects them to regroup without much trouble. Dell introduced its first netbook in September.
However, Apple has been openly dismissive of the product.
Apple Inc (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Chief Executive Steve Jobs, on a conference call after the company's earnings, said the iPhone does many of the things that netbooks do, and said there were markets that the company was just not interested in.

Maybe AMD will hvae to sell their new $300 million Austin Campus - what else is left to sell?
AMD took their big shot - and so far they have come up EMPTY.

Its new Cray CX1 is a small cabinet that can hold up to eight circuit boards, known as blades, that each have one or two Intel Xeon microprocessors.
Cray Inc., a name long linked to some of the world's biggest computers, is breaking from tradition and introducing a low-end machine that can sit next to a user's desk.
The new computer, which starts at $25,000, uses chips from Intel Corp. and ships with a version of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software. It is designed to handle technical chores that are too big for a personal computer but don't require the resources of supercomputers, large server systems that Cray and other companies typically sell for millions of dollars.
Cray Inc.
The new computer is designed to handle chores too big for a personal computer.
"It's the smallest thing we've done," said Ian Miller, a Cray senior vice president.
Cray's move is the latest sign of big changes in the technical-computing market. While conventional supercomputers remain a mainstay for jobs such as simulating underground oil deposits and designing cars, some customers are buying a new class of less-expensive servers for smaller technical jobs.
In some cases, the lower-end systems are being purchased by small companies that can't afford a supercomputer -- such as companies that design components for auto makers -- or to serve groups of employees at companies or universities. "For everyone who can't get time on the big server, if they have something like this in their office it's a home run," said Earl Joseph, an analyst at the market-research firm IDC.
Cray, based in Seattle, inherited the supercomputer business started in 1972 by the late Seymour Cray. Silicon Graphics Inc. purchased Cray in 1996 and sold it in 2000 to Tera Computer Co., which assumed the Cray name. The company, a onetime leader in supercomputer sales, now trails the market share of companies such as International Business Machines Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.
One factor is that those companies have general-purpose-server businesses to help defray hardware-development costs. Cray, which originally designed its own circuitry, also was affected as users shifted to less-expensive x86 chip technology that Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. developed for personal computers.
Cray has now added supercomputers that use AMD chips and in April announced plans to begin using Intel technology, too. Its new Cray CX1 is a small cabinet that can hold up to eight circuit boards, known as blades, that each have one or two Intel Xeon microprocessors. Higher-end configurations cost up to $80,000, Mr. Miller said.
The CX1 faces plenty of competition, including an H-P system dubbed Shorty. Other rivals with low-end machines include Silicon Graphics; Eng Lim Goh, its chief technology officer, said profit margins on those servers are much lower than on high-end systems.
Technical servers using x86 chips, often called clusters, typically use versions of the Linux operating system. But Cray and Microsoft are hoping to appeal to technical-computing newcomers who are used to Windows. The CX1 can run Linux but comes standard with an operating system called Windows HPC Server 2008 that won't be formally introduced until next week.
Eventually, Microsoft is pushing for advances in programming techniques so that an array of programs that work with Windows can work efficiently on the dozens or hundreds of processors found on supercomputers. "That will be just a revolution," said Burton Smith, a co-founder of Tera who holds the title of technical fellow at Microsoft.

It is what AMD has always done well -
spend Other People's Money - OPM - the AMD drug of choice.
"upgraded from a 2.8 Pentium to an E8400 3.0 and truthfully, I don't see much difference at all. "
You have discovered the Inconvenient Truth.
Nobody needs faster Intel CPUs - in fact, all they need is the fastest AMD Athlon 64 that is currently available.
Tell you what I'll do, though.
For $15, I'll take that E8400 and motherboard and RAM off your hands and I'll even pay half the shipping costs - just so you don't feel cheated by Intel's chicanery.
Deal?

"these new AMD devices that have magically appeared from the electric heavens....LSD must still be a favourite drug of choice for some of the remaining Marxists."
What nice imagery.
It shows the wild imagination of the Intel Killers - people who hate success with such bile - never once acknowledging the remarkable difficulty it is to be so successful - yet ignoring the abject failures of the failing companies attempting to replace Intel's so-called monopoly with their own monopoly.
"They will .... ensuring INTC stays under $30 permanently "
Yes - that seems to be the total reason for AMD's existence - and the AMD fanboy existence - they exist only to do damage to Intel.
AMD and their fanboys are the ultimate MARXISTS - existing only to destroy capital.
Most corporations exist to make a profit for their shareholders - but AMD has a NET LOSS for its 40 years of existence - in keeping with their corporate goals of undermining Intel.

Although Intel's Stock price is down lately - Wall Street Short Sellers increasing their short sales by 21 million shares in late June- we have achieved a milestone - previously popularized by the AMD fanboys:
Intel's share price is now > 4x AMD's share price.
The AMD fanboys have not pointed this out - for obvious reasons.
This mostly is due to AMD's pathetic performance.

Keep up the good work !!!

Intel opens $3.5 billion Israel chip plant
3rd July 2008
By Staff Writer
Intel has opened a new $3.5 billion chip-manufacturing plant in Israel to replace its Fab 8 Jerusalem plant that closed operations earlier this year.
The Fab 28 plant, located at Kiryat Gat, will be operational in September with a daily output hitting $10m. Its seventh 300mm wafer factory and third factory to produce 45nm chips, the plant in full production is expected to employ nearly 2,000 people.
The facility will develop chips that are more energy efficient to be used in making ultra-low-powered processors for mobile internet, consumer electronics devices, and low-cost personal computers.
Maxine Fassberg, vice president and the general manager of Intel Israel, said: "When we hit full production, we will change Israel's GDP by 2%."
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, as well as a number of other ministers and government officers.
The new plant produces chips using 45 nanometer technology used in microprocessors for personal computers and servers, as well as ultra-low powered processors for mobile internet instruments.
One thing has to be said: the Fab 28 is enormous. Fassberg provided a few statistics that demonstrate the scale of the project: 770 kilometers of cable was laid during construction - or 1.7 times the length of the entire state. Some 45,000 light fixtures were installed, providing a total of 1.8 million watts of lighting, enough to illuminate five soccer stadiums. About 2,000 persons will be employed at the new plant. And the Fab 28 will ship silicon slices worth about $10 million every day, changing Israel's gross domestic product by 2%.
Olmert told the audience that during a meeting with then Intel Inc. CEO Craig Barrett - who is now chairman of the firm - Barrett admitted that without Intel Israel's contribution, Intel Inc. could not have survived.
This was in 2003, after Israel had developed the Centrino process, which became a huge success, and now continues its career in Intel's Duo Core platform.
"AMD CEO Pitches Magny Cours Vision...."
In light of the botched Phleanom and Barforama quad cores, I think AMD really should call their product line the "Mangled Cores"
" AMD also owes their shorlders detail regarding implementation of 10% staff reduction. As well as the plan for break-even on reduced revenue. "
No they don't.
AMD in the past two years has lost 5 or 6 BILLION DOLLARS - BOTCHED their native quad core CPU design and launch, lost market share and performance to Intel across the board, spun the company into crippling debt ....and the shareholders only managed to send one Octogenarian Cracker Fart to AMD's annual meeting and ask one lamo question about AMD sponsoring some retarded golf tournament in Austin.
AMD's shareholders are stupid farts and they deserve to lose their entire AMD investments.
And AMD managment could care less.
So AMD management feeds their shareholders lies and bull$hit - and the shareholders eat it up with a $hit eating grin spread across their faces.
"Doug Freedman said AMD stock could double because AMD will implement asset-light soon..
That is a supreme AMD Fairy Tale Lie.
If Intel had spun this tale - and lied for 15 months and never given any details - the Wall Street crooks would be slamming Intel on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, Intel doesn't give Wall Street Crooks a chance to separate suckers from their money.
AMD constantly gives Wall Street Crooks a chance to separate suckers from their money - witness the Abu Dhabi suckers and the current bond holder patsies.
You just know that Wall Street and AMD are cooking up some new financial shenanigans to fleece money from new unsuspecting investors - that only a John Malone (TCI/Liberty Media) could love.
"Is there any hint what processor powers iPhone ?"
Judging by the way their stock has been behaving the past few days, It would have to be AMD's Turion Ultra LZ86 inside that Apple phone.
"Intel-AMD trial date moved to Feb 2010 "
The purpose here should be obvious.
Hector Ruiz will turn 65 on Dec. 25, 2010 - and will face mandatory retirement before this trial is ever concluded.
He will be gone - and his successor - probably Dirk Meyer - will be saddled with the loss of this law suit.
Hector is looking out for Hector.
He'll probably pay himself $50 million between now and then for his superb performance.
Intel Cuts Power Consumption Rating Of "Skulltrail Xeon"

Santa Clara (CA) - Intel is transitioning all of its 45 nm Xeon DP processors from the C-O to the E-0 stepping. There are no changes in the feature set of the Harpertown quad core CPUs and Wolfdale dual-core processors, with the exception of the flagship model, which is the sister model of the company’s Skulltrail processor Core 2 Extreme QX9775. The thermal design power (TDP) rating of the Xeon X5482 drops by 20%.
According to a product change notification sent to Intel customers yesterday, all 18 current 45 nm Xeon processors are transitioned to the new stepping with first samples expected to become available on July 3. The updated processors are scheduled to begin shipping on October 6 and Intel asks its customers to be prepared to receive these CPUs by October 20 of this year.
Since there are no new features and (almost) no specification changes, Intel says that only "minimal re-qualification" will be required on the system builder side. However, the new chips will require a BIOS update.
The only CPU that does see specification change is the Xeon DP X5482: According to Intel, the 3.2 GHz chips carries a 120 watt TDP rating in the E-O stepping, compared to a 150 watt rating in the C-O version. The
"AMD Ships Low-Power Barcelonas..
The reality is that these are LOW PERFORMANCE Barcelonas - limping along at 1.8 and 1.9 GHz.
That's why they are "low power"
I imagine AMD has tonnes of these available, what with their superlative 65 nM SOI process technology.
"you have not learnt to debate civilly after all these years.
"
So...this is your retort after you have once again been proven completely wrong?
You should join AMD's PR department - and you can put out press releases about AMD's soaring profits, industry leading technology and devices, and Hector's nomination for a Noble Prize.
"Hector is a great CEO because if there is a deal to cut which will benefit AMD he will cut it successfully."
I guess the $5.4 Billion Dollar purchase of ATI for mostly cash is a good example of Hector's brilliance - eh?
"Technically Barcelona has always been a home run apart from the TLB own goal bug, in its highest speed 65nm incarnation (2.5-2.6 GHz) it will compete quite successfully with the best 3GHz+ 12MB 45nm Core 2 products while giving away 8MB in cache and at least 500 MHz in clock and some would argue to a more powerful core."
I see Pete has company over there in Gerassic Park - the alternative universe for AMD fanboys.
"you won't get me to tell any lies for any side..."
I Know - ypou will do this of your own accord.
Tell us again how Bugalona was as a "Home Run".
Tell us why AMD is a great investment.
Tell us why Hector is such a great CEO of AMD.
Tell us when AMD will be really profitable again.
"Cray can't afford to pay for any co-engineering,..."
You are most certainly correct.
And you probably know why.
Cray's multi-year collaboration with AMD has resulted in Cray going nearly bankrupt.
Of course, they have company - AMD is essentially bankrupt as well.
I suppose we will now begin to hear the new MAS Mantra:
"HPC computing is worthless"
(Now that AMD is getting their butt bounced around)
"after a multithreaded speedracer Plan A and a fat 6-issue Plan B ?
Where can I buy one of these AMD "Speedracers" and "fat 6-issue" CPUs?
Why hasn't AMD trumpeted these with all the big mouths that they possess?
Arlo - Re" I put that AMD PC under that pile of garbage.."
That AMD PC WAS the pile of garbage.
Give my regards to Alice and Officer Obee.
the case was a blow to Democrats....
A BLOW to Democrats?
I didn't know Monica Lewinsky was involved in the Spitzer scandal.
Tsk...Tsk.....
So, the results of our today’s dual-core processor shoot-out indicate clearly that Intel processors win the “Best Buy” title in every single price segment. And it will remain this way until AMD reduces the prices on its Athlon 64 X2, which keep rapidly losing their appeal. The situation may also change if they launch revised triple-core and dual-core processors on Phenom-like architecture, which have a chance of become more competitive against Core 2 Duo. However, it will hardly happen any time soon.

Never heard of him which shows ..
Which shows how very little you really know about AMD.
And that surprises none of us.
I must say, your vaunted Phleanom has been a 9 month disaster for AMD.
But you love everything AMD....right?
Another Senior Vice President of AMD abandons ship.
The BIG RATS are leaving at a steady pace.
