Intel's P4 was a commercial and financial success - completely outclassing the K8.

Intel's P4 outsold AMD's K8 by about 3.5x to 1 - a whopping win for the P4.

During the time frame these two devices were made - 2003 - 2007, let's look at the relative financial success that the P4 and the K8 brought Intel and AMD respectively:

                             Year
2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
Net Income
(Millions $)
Intel 5,641 7,516 8,664 5,044 6,976

AMD -274 91 165 -166 -3379

AMD was only profitable 2 of the 6 years that their K8 was their flagship processor. Those 2 years produced only marginal profits.

Let's ignore 2007 - AMD's ATI screwups swamped their losses for that year.

For 2003 - 2006, when P4 was the DOMINANT CPU, Intel's combined net income was $26,865,000,000.

That's essentially 27 Billion Dollars Net Income for Intel !!

AMD's combined income for these years was -$184,000,000

By any stretch of the imagination, K8 was a complete DISASTER for AMD, and the P4 was an unqualified, runaway success for Intel.
