Boom times for SA miners
By: Julius Cobbett

JOHANNESBURG (Mineweb.com) --Geopolitical and financial turmoil is doubly good for South African gold miners. Brewing trouble in the Middle East has boosted the gold price while a sell-off in emerging currencies has provided weakness to the rand. The two changes combined provide a potent windfall for South African gold miners.
Gold traded as high as $676 on Thursday as fighting between Israel and Lebanon escalated, but later dropped $10 after an Israeli official told Sky News that the offensive against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon may end within days. Meanwhile the rand hit 7.26 against the dollar – it’s weakest level since January 2004.
South African gold miners – who have costs in rand, but revenues in dollars – make handsome profits under such conditions. In its most recent quarterly presentation to investors, Harmony Gold, a marginal miner, said that it’s profit margin would jump from 23% to 35% if the gold price moved from R110 000 a kilogram to R130 000.
The average gold price for the quarter ended was about R130 000. This morning it was R155 000 an ounce. This should give a boost for companies like Harmony, but analysts fret that increased revenues will be accompanied by higher costs. “We shall not be surprised if the group (Harmony) delivers a poor to very poor cost performance for (the quarter to) June on the back of lower gold output,” said JP Morgan in an investor note last week.
Peter Major, analyst at Cadiz, likens today’s strife to the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. “For guys who say history never repeats itself, they better have a good look at this, because this is like reliving the late Seventies all over again,” he said on Mineweb Radio Friday.
“I think these events like the higher oil prices, driven by rising global uncertainty, are also playing through into the higher gold price, and that will continue for some time into the future,” said Paul Walker of consultancy GFMS on radio Thursday.
“I think gold has the perfect storm right now. The gold price has got everything going for it. You have geopolitical risk, you’ve got currency worries globally, you have got economic worries globally. There’s the twin deficit issue. There is risk aversion. If this doesn’t take the gold price to $850, nothing will take it to $850,” he argues.
Merrill Lynch economist Nazmeera Moolla says that a huge deterioration in South Africa’s trade deficit over the course of the past nine months has put pressure on the rand. “What has also made it worse is because we have had shutdowns at some of the refineries, problems with processing. We have also had to import some processed energy products, which cost more and therefore worsten our trade deficit,” she argues.
Nazmeera says that there is likely to be continued downward pressure on the rand as South African continues to import infrastructure and other goods. “But as long as the imports are going into infrastructure which raises a potential growth rate in South Africa, that in turn leaves foreign investors with higher confidence in our growth potential. So there is some offset there,” she says.

According to the previous owners, these mines -
have been prodigious producers since 1893 -
with recorded silver values ranging -
from 134.6 to 395 ounces of silver per ton.
The latest laboratory assay shows an average

including gold, lead, zinc in addition to silver.
The previous owners of these claims said that,
although the type and size of potential reserves
is unknown some of the 49 claims -
have shown historically from 3,565 tons of ore, -
to yield 229,556 ounces of silver -
46 ounces of gold -
53,690 pounds of lead -
and 2,026 pounds of copper.
PHILIPPINES:
A Mining Operations Agreement for a 10 year period ,

on the Santa Rosa Mining Site.
Historically based on the feasibility studies -
made by the former mining operators,
the Santa Rosa Mining Site mills -
650 - 675 tons of ores daily -
yielding an approximate 90 ounces of gold per day.
Estimated annual ore production yields -
32,000 ounces of gold -
generating an estimated gross annual income -

or capital outlay.
Short range plans to construct a new electro-winning -
and refining plant will maximize the gold -
and silver recovery -
while also adding the recovery of other -
precious metals such as platinum -
iridium -
and palladium -
to the site's products.
The new facility will also increase the capacity -
of ore throughput resulting in further increases -
in total production and bottom line profits.
This acquisition marks a new era of cooperation -
between private industry and the Philippine government -
in the development and refining -
of the island's natural resources -
implementing the company's vision -
and mission of strong management plan -
for community service, socio-economic -
and environmental awareness.

Summertime has proven to be the best time to buy Gold.
During a typical year - Gold trading volumes fall -
considerably in June and July in what market -
watchers dub the "summer doldrums".
People simply go on vacation both mentally and physically.
That applies both to investors and professional investment
advisors," said Kosares, who authored the book
"The ABCs of Gold Investing".
The investment business in general tends to fall into
a lull during the summer months -
and Gold and Silver is no exception.
These doldrums run from June until the middle of August -
when the jewelry industry begins gearing up -
for demand linked to various year-end festivals -
and celebrations around the world.
Usually around mid-August investors also start thinking -
about shaping up their portfolios, which contributes -
to a late summer lift in investment interest.
"It's like someone throws a switch and everything returns -
to normal," said Kosares, who has been spotting - the Gold -
market trends for more than 30 years.
Looking at price movements since 2001, the first year -
of the current gold bull market, Kosares noticed that -
any purchase of gold made during the months of -
June and July resulted in a profit come Christmas time.
"Purchases made during the summer doldrums were up by an -
average of 12% by the year-end holidays -
according to our study," he said.
And these gains have generally gotten bigger each year.
According to Kosares' study, the price of Gold POG -
at the end of 2001 was up 2.8% from the summer -
doldrums period, but this increased to 9.5% in 2002,
17.7% in 2003, 10.2% in 2004 and a -
whopping 20% in 2005.
"Over the last four years, you could have picked up -
the phone at any time between bouts of chasing -
the wily trout or that little white ball and purchased -
a winning gold position," he said.
Autumn Bounce Could Put Gold Back Over $700
So what kind of autumn Gold bounce can be expected this year?
Kosares said if the current gold correction bottoms -
in the $600/oz area, the yellow metal could end the year -
around $675 based on the average 12% gain over the summer -
doldrums period seen over the past five years.
However, if the 20% gain seen in 2005 can be repeated -
in 2006 Gold price could be around $720 come New Years.
Gold was trading at $606.85/oz Monday morning in Asia.
But Kosares is even more optimistic and thinks there is -
a good chance Gold will top its 26 year-high of $725 -
hit in early May and make a run at $760 -
if not higher, by year's end.
"This summer could potentially be the best buy opportunity -
since the current bull market began," he said.
That could mean investors who sock away some Gold now -
may have more to show for their summer of 2006 -
than just a nice tan.

Summertime has proven to be the best time to buy Gold.
During a typical year - Gold trading volumes fall -
considerably in June and July in what market -
watchers dub the "summer doldrums".
People simply go on vacation both mentally and physically.

PAIM News:
July 12 -
Pearl Asian Mining Industries -
(PAIM) -
Issues Clarification on 90% Buyback of Its Common Shares -
and Conversion of Debentures to Common Stock;
Also Announces a Visit by USA Shareholder to -
the 'Operation Cagayan De Oro' Gold Minesite
Pearl Asian Mining Industries, Inc. -
(OTC: PAIM) -
announced that it is close to completing the buyback -
of approximately 27,000,000,000 or 90% of its issued -
and outstanding common shares using a convertible -
debenture (CD).
PAIM has transferred to DTCC CD notes -
with a face value of approximately US$27,000,000.00 -
which DTCC received approximately June 21, 2006.
However, PAIM -
has not received any of the 27,000,000,000 common shares -
subject of the buyback.
DTCC should be in the process of sending to PAIM -
90% of the common and outstanding shares in exchange -
for the CDs.
Although PAIM -
has set the buyback/exchange date for June 15, 2006, -
some confusion has occurred as the brokerages -
seem to have not been sufficiently informed -
by their clearing houses via DTCC -
to segregate 90% of all common shares held.
As a result, some brokerages have erroneously -
included in the buyback shares purchased -
after the buyback/exchange date of June 15, 2006.
In view of this, PAIM -
is advising all shareholders to check their accounts -
and immediately bring to their brokers' attention -
any discrepancies or errors.
Any shares bought and sold in the market now -
should only be the remaining 10%, -
although some of DTCC's participants, -
i.e. brokers, have failed to notify their clients, -
which has resulted in many shareholders -
selling shares short, which they thought -
were still available from the 90%.
Pearl Asian advises shareholders -
who may have unintentionally sold short -
on PAIM shares to immediately contact -
their brokers to work out a way to cover -
their positions.
These shares sold short -
will be fully known once the first report -
after the new NASD SHO Regulation, -
which includes Pink Sheet stocks -
and took effect July 3, is released -
within the month.
The remaining 10% of common shares -
in shareholders' accounts should be available -
for trading at any time.
To reiterate, the buyback rate is that -
for every common share surrendered, -
Pearl Asian will pay $0.001, the par value -
of the common shares in the form of -
convertible debentures, -
when held to the maturity of five years.
The CD is to be paid on the fifth year -
without interest.
The debentures can be converted back -
to common shares at a fixed rate of $0.01 per share -
at any time on or before maturity, -
upon surrender of the original CD note -
to the company or its transfer agent.
Shareholders' accounts -
should indicate the value of the CD, -
with the proviso that said value will mature -
after five years.
We expect the CD to begin trading OTC -
on the Yellow Sheets -
in the near future -
and there should be no restrictions -
on selling or trading CDs -
after the exchange is completed.
In an unrelated development, -
Pearl Asian announced -
the availability of photos involving -
the visit of a shareholder to -
the Binasan Minesite.
Visit the website at -
http://www.PearlAsianMining.com
for updates and photos on -
Operation Cagayan de Oro -
including the visiting shareholder.
