European H2020 Project FLAME Kicks Off Call for Experiments
WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 24, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company, today announced that the European H2020 project, FLAME, will host its kick off on January 24 – 25, 2017 in Southampton, U.K.
The FLAME project aims to establish a real-life, city-scale environment for the experimentation of personalized, interactive, mobile, and localized media experiments. The three-year project is led by a consortium comprising twelve partners including University of Southampton, Atos Spain, InterDigital Europe, i2CAT, University of Bristol, Nextworks, Martel Innovate, VRT, The Walt Disney Company, ETH Zurich, Institut Municipal D'Informática de Barcelona, and Bristol is Open.
After its initial year of city-scale deployment, FLAME will seek twenty-plus media-related experiments, spanning several months throughout 2018 and 2019, funded through an open call to industrial partners and SMEs. The experiments will utilize the FLAME Future Media Internet platform with a Next Generation Network flexible routing platform at its heart, deployed in the city environment of Bristol is Open as well as in several potential replica sites throughout the scope of the project.
Developed by InterDigital, the Next Generation Network flexible routing platform is modeled after prototype efforts from two other H2020 collaborative research and development projects, POINT ("iP Over IcN - the betTer IP") and RIFE (aRchitecture for an Internet For Everybody). In addition, the flexible routing platform is an ongoing ETSI ISG MEC proof-of-concept and will be demonstrated at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
“We’re very pleased to be a part of this reinvention of the media ecosystem,” said Dirk Trossen, Principal Scientist of InterDigital Europe, and lead of EU-funded efforts in this space. “The project underscores the value in the development of a unique network service solution, such as the flexible routing platform, which utilizes ICN and SDN techniques to deliver on the content and demand characteristics presented with future highly dynamic networks.”

scooby: $92.15 on 12-20-16 closing price;
But what's a few cents amongst friends!
LOL
WOW! Nice price movement today. Hope it closes above $92 for the day.
Could be the result of either the Apple/Qualcomm issue, the IOT recognition for IDCC yesterday, Foxconn's possible plant in the US, or Samsung's huge operating profit for the year.
Something has perked the eares and eyes on Wall Street that is making the stock move up.
OR, maybe something else is coming IDCC's way that will bust this wide open.

InterDigital Communications (Nasdaq: IDCC) disclosed in an 8-K filint that it entered into a worldwide, non-transferable, non-exclusive, patent license agreement with LG Electronics Inc. (LG). The five-year patent license agreement, effective January 1, 2006, covers the sale, both prior to January 1, 2006 and during the five-year term, of terminal units compliant with all TDMA-based Second Generation (2G) standards (including TIA-136, GSM, GPRS, and EDGE) and all Third Generation (3G) standards (including WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and cdma2000(R) technology and its extensions), and infrastructure compliant with cdma2000(R) technology and its extensions up to a limited threshold amount, under all patents owned by InterDigital prior to and during the term of the license. Under the terms of the patent license agreement, LG is obligated to pay InterDigital three equal installments of $95 million, in the first quarters of 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. At the end of the five year term, LG will receive a paid-up license to sell single-mode GSM/GPRS/EDGE terminal units under the patents included under the license.

mickeybritt: I believe they argued the issue of whether they had a paid up license after the expiration of the license term.
loophole73: his comment was
if IDCC gets paid for all of these at 50 cents a phone that will be 22+ million.
hrbart: Hanging in there. A little disappointed with the recent selloff in IDCC.
I'm thinking that IDCC paid a pretty penny for hillcrest. I hope it turns out to be a dimamond in the rough instead of a pig in a poke.
Can't wait to see the makeup of what they got and what they paid.
Best of wishes to you for the new year.
mickeybritt: Remember Apple ???
They were licensed, then their license expired. IDCC did not sue Apple for whatever reason.
Low and behold, IDCC got a license with Apple in the last quarter.
SO, let the 'discussions' continue with LG, ZTE, and the likes. Maybe our Best In Class licensing team will surprise us soon with a new license agreement from the two companies.

mickey, no cat didn't have my tongue -- had to go to cardio rehab and then had an errand to run, so that is wqhy I didn't respond immediately.
mickeybritt: I have three considerations that I ask myself daily as it pertains to IDCC:
1. Is there any adverse news for IDCC that would suggest a continual decline in share price
2. Is there any potential good news that would suggest a continued upward move in the share price
3. Is it time to take my marbles off the table and NEVER look at the share price again.
It's like when I play a slot machine at the casino. I generally will not look back at the machine to see if the next patron is winning or losing. I set my 'win' or 'lose' limit at the machine and then walk away when either target is reached.
mickeybritt: Just another point. If the price corrected down by 10%, it would be back around $82+ which is where he said he would 'probably sell'.
And, if he holds on 1 more business day, he might even save on taxes if Trump reduces the capital gains tax or lowers the overall tax rates.
Just like we can't tell why IDCC does what it does because of the lack of facts and information, you can't tell why someone sells or doesn't sell because of the lack of their personal information and reasoning.
mickeybritt: you need to reread bulldzr's WHOLE STATEMENT about why he decided to hold. He said
Well Mickey I did say that I would probably sell at $80, but I just couldn't pull the trigger. The price was continuing to climb, and now with the APPL license I will probably continue to hold at least for the dividend. I just think we need to watch the market very closely, as I am not as optimistic as you and others are for 2017.
He is doing nothing different than any analyst might or funds manager does on a DAILY BASIS. Namely, evaluate the market conditions, stock fundamentals, and objectives and then act accordingly. That is why some analysts raise their target prices or their ratings on stocks.
I evaluate my portfolios every day, taking into consideration the market conditions in general and company specific fundamentals. Raising and setting upper and lower limits are the name of the game.
The only thing one can't predict is the situation similar to the days around the 3rd quarter earnings announcement, where the stock took a $14 haircut. Certainly, the market (for IDCC) recovered after a short period of time and many did not panic.
jmo
FINALLY !!! Short interest below 1-million shares.
We've come a long way, baby!
mickeybritt: obviously, IDCC saw something in the company to make the purchase.
As this is a private company:
* We have NO IDEA whether they are making money or not;
* We don't know the particulars of who is licensing from the company;
* We don't know the amount(s) of payments they are receiving
* We don't know when their licenses expire
*we don't know whether they are having or will have trouble relicensing
* we have no idea what the price paid for the company
I do not believe that the press release disclosed any answere to present and future potential of the company.
I know you will say that something like IDCC is not stupid . . . etc.
But, without knowing, we can't say this was a win-win situation. IDCC has partnered with some other 'white elephants' and took the pipe on some of those business ventures.
Unlike other companies that make purchases, IDCC discloses very little. BUT, we'll see sooner or later whether this was a good deal and whether it will add to our bottom line sooner or later.

my3sons87: You missed the 'Special Dividend' on your Christmas List.
olddog: I am presuming that the daal has or will close before year-end since this is a private company.
I am also hoping that IDCC's financial reports for 4th quarter, 2016 discloses the carrying value of the acquisition on its books, incluxing footnote(s) for value of the 235 patents (issued and/or pending), goodwill if any paid for the company, and other tangible/intangible assets in the acquisition.
Lastly, whether the founder will stay on and what his official capacity will be in Interdigital.
ny thoughts or comments you may want to express?

If you like the shares so much and need to sell for an IRA distribution, buy them bsck in a regular account. Then, you have complied with the IRWS rules for IRA distributions and still have the potential with the shares.

olddog: thanks, I learn something new every day.
Just didn't understand why the 'HIGH' was not the $100 or so in Pre Market trading.
Someone posted on another board that they put in a pre-market order to sell at $100 and got gobbled up before they could make any change.
Too late to cancel all of my $100 sell orders, got 1/3 of my position sucked up!
A little disappointed with the APPLE news. Share price moved up significantly pr-market but slid down during the trading day. I would have hoped and thought that this would have been a big mover and kept a lot of the initial gains.
Management sure took care of themselves with an increase in the bonus provision according to the guidance report.
It is disappointing with both the Huawei back monies and the pop from Apple that the BOD hasn't announced ANY special dividend to the ones who would appreciate it the most -- namely the longs / shareholders who bought into the stock. Price appreciation is great but cash is king.

Maybe the website administrator is old like those left on the board and it is difficult to keep it 'up'! LOL
Seems like the response time is still slow but hopefully it will stay on line.
mickeybritt: you said regarding the Iot
This could be a big factor in future earnings of IDCC. I do not see any benefit of aligning with Avanci if all the revenue will be between 75 and 100 mullion.
“With that strong and stable platform in place, we’re well-positioned to drive towards our goals of $500 million to $600 million in annual recurring revenue from our core terminal unit licensing business and $75 million to $100 million from our IoT business.”
new intra day high $86.20,
Yes, I'm loving it!
I would say that!
Don't know what's better -- starting up a lot and trickle down OR starting in the red and a comeback near the end of dzy.
No, not loving it. I would love to see a special dividend payable in jANUARY, 2017 FOR ABOUT $3-$6 oer share and an announcement of a buy out offer of $125 per share from Google, Apple, or someone whose stock is actively traded and is steady.
MISSING SHAREHOLDER FROM THE PAST:
Several years ago at an ASM, there was a (substantial) shareholder who 'spoke out' at the meeting.
Does anyone remember his name and whether he is still 'holding' shared of InterDigital?
Just curious.
mickeybritt: When I think of the IoT, I think of it in terms of a car that drives by itself. You need to software to 'drive the car', but you also need 'the car, its body, motor, tires, etc. to drive.
SO, when Merritt says it is a $17 trillion dollar business, IT IS ALL THE COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAMS AND THE CAR ITSELF that is part of the overall picture.
Of course, you can buy that yellow or green Gremlin owned (I think) by my3sons that does not have all the bells and whistles that will still get you from your home to your place of work.
Maybe I am thinking 'outside of the box or way off base', but I think Merritt would know better than you or I what makes up the $17 TRILLION DOLLARS.
OR, maybe Merritt's calculator has too many zero's or he doesn't know how to use the calculator.
Of course maybe your calculations are correct and he is 'pocketing the difference'! LOL
JMO
OMG! S/P is in the RED by $0.10 !.
Time for DMiller to predict price direction back to the $60's before the $80's. Oops, we are already in the $80's! SO, lets change that to the $90's.
LOL
I'll take both a deal followed by a buy out.
I don't think our Best In Class sales team has delivered anythintg to us this year with the title of a NEW (never before) license agreement.
If the BOD met this month, maybe they will break the ice with an announcement of a special dividend.
Something has to come before year-end.

QUESTION: What has our Best In Class Sales Team brought to the table this year?
I'm talking about BRAND NEW licenses (NEVER BEFORE LICENSED WITH iNTERdIGITAL); not those that came about as a result of Arbitrstion / Settlement / Litigation.
OK, I'll give in to extension of licenses with additional products or terms negotiated.
INTERESTING: Where Is the iPhone Made?
by Sam Costello
Updated April 10, 2016
Anyone who has bought an iPod, iPhone, or other Apple product has seen the note on the company’s packaging that its products are designed in California. But that doesn't mean they're manufactured there. Answering the question of where the iPhone is made isn't simple.
Assembled vs. Manufactured
When trying to understand where Apple manufactures its devices, there are two key concepts that sound similar but are actually different: assembling and manufacturing.
Manufacturing is the process of making the components that go into the iPhone. While Apple designs and sells the iPhone, it doesn't manufacture its components. Instead, Apple uses on manufacturers from around the world to deliver individual parts. The manufacturers specialize in particular items—camera specialists manufacture the lens and camera assembly, screen specialists build the display, etc.
Assembling, on the other hand, is the process of taking all of the individual components built by specialist manufacturers and combining them into a finished, working iPhone.
The iPhone's Component Manufacturers
Since there are hundreds of individual components in every iPhone, it's not possible to list every manufacturer whose products are found in the phone. It's also very hard to list exactly where those components are made (especially because sometimes one company builds the same component at multiple factories).
Some of the suppliers of key or interesting parts for the iPhone 5S, 6, and 6S (according to IHS and Macworld), and where they operate, include:
Accelerometer: Bosch Sensortech. Based in Germany, with locations in the U.S., China, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan
Audio chips: Cirrus Logic. Based in the U.S., with locations in the U.K., China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore
Battery: Samsung. Based in South Korea, with locations in 80 countries
Battery: Sunwoda Electronic. Based in China
Camera: Qualcomm. Based in the U.S., with locations in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and more than a dozen locations through Europe and Latin America
Camera: Sony. Based in Japan, with locations in dozens countries
Chips for 3G/4G/LTE networking: Qualcomm.
Compass: AKM Semiconductor. Based in Japan, with locations in the U.S., France, England, China, South Korea, and Taiwan
Glass screen: Corning. Based in the U.S., with locations in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Turkey, the U.K., and the United Arab Emirates
Gyroscope: STMicroelectronics. Based in Switzerland, with locations 35 countries
Flash memory: Toshiba. Based in Japan, with locations in over 50 countries
Flash memory: Samsung.
LCD screen: Sharp. Based in Japan, with locations in 13 countries
LCD screen: LG. Based in South Korea, with locations in Poland and China
A-series Processor: Samsung.
A-series Processor: TSMC. Based in Taiwan, with locations in China, Singapore, and the U.S.
Touch ID: TSMC
Touch ID: Xintec. Based in Taiwan.
Touchscreen controller: Broadcom. Based in the U.S., with locations in Israel, Greece, the U.K., the Netherlands, Belgium, France, India, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea
Wi-Fi chip: Murata. Based in the U.S., with locations in Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Vietnam, The Netherlands, Spain, the U.K., Germany, Hungary, France, Italy, and Finland
The iPhone's Assemblers
The components manufactured by those companies all around the world are ultimately sent to just two companies to assemble into iPods, iPhones, and iPads. Those companies are Foxconn and Pegatron, both of which are based in Taiwan.
Technically, Foxconn is the company’s trade name; the firm’s official name is Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. Foxconn is Apple's longest running partner in building these devices. It currently assembles the majority of Apple's iPhones in its Shenzen, China, location though Foxconn maintains factories in countries across the world, including Thailand, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Pegatron is a relatively recent addition to the iPhone assembly process. It is estimated that it built about 30% of the iPhone 6 orders in its Chinese plants.
Conclusion
As you can see, the answer to the question of where the iPhone is made isn't simple. It can boiled down to China, since that's where all the components are assembled and the final, working devices come from, but it's actually a complex, nuanced worldwide effort to manufacture all the parts that go into making an iPhone.
