You told me about this. Do you have the one that lost? That was HILARIOUS!
1. Very funny on "supposably". This being a running joke, it took guts to write it publicly.
2. Very funny on the cattle and probably accurate.
3. With no viagra for old Soloman, I'd have to say that most of bitter Ecclesiastes was probably sour grapes. Wish people used more common sense when reading scriptures. Humans, often humans that would be in jail today for all kinds of heinous behavior, wrote them! HellOOOOooooooo.
Thanks to you and Lobo for the recommendation. I'm taking myself to the movies today... early show, and couldn't decide.
Dalai Lobo :)
I agree regarding the acting. In my first review that is precisely why I gave it a pretty high rating, superb acting. You know what? I haven't even considered what I think the best pic of the year was of those I've seen.
The academy is a tired, old organization that lacks imagination. I was SHOCKED they gave Hoffman that award for Capote but then again, most of them probably knew Capote. Honestly, I have no idea who sits on that board but they are incredibly unimaginative.
Crash was downright ridiculous.
Princess Bride was masterful.
I'm not buying it in this case. It was not believable. A movie is a movie, let's face it. It's not supposed to be a slave to reality but in Crash the demagoguery irked me to no end for some reason. And I realize I am nearly alone here in how I feel about it.
You didn't like Princess Bride and it's on my Perfect Movie list. That's the way it goes.
Robert Altman and others have been doing that for decades. It wasn't particularly innovative, courageous or interesting to me. In this case, I even found it forced and I really hate to say this, but rather simplistic.
I have! Loved Junebug and really liked Squid, but for the ending. The characters in Squid were PERFECT! You?
If I honestly felt that somebody who was in my house doing work on my locks was questionable, I wouldn't humiliate him relentlessly by yelling like a maniac right in the next room and in front of everyone as if he and everybody else couldn't hear me. Would you, even in your wildest fury, do that? You don't taunt someone to mess with you if you really fear them, especially someone who has already been in your house and knows what you look like. If memory serves me, wasn't there a black woman (her husband's assistant or something) conveniently there for effect (or should I say affect), too? That was just too ridiculous.
I'm happy people are passionate about the film, at least. Originally, I rated the movie 3.75/5, mostly for the acting. An example I used was Bullock's performance in the locksmith scene. Her acting was terrific but the scenario was absurd. I agree that the acting was wonderful. I also enjoyed the fact that the characters were somewhat complex. The screenplay is what I had a problem with (while I understand that the complexity of some of the characters IS part of the screenplay). Hey, that's what makes the world go round, I suppose. I thought the story was hogwash.
I need some right now. Something is seriously wrong with this tooth. I cannot believe I brought this upon myself. I had only two silver fillings in my entire mouth. Both back molars, bottom right and left. Asked dentist to change to white fillings and he damaged the nerves in BOTH of them. This was in October or November! I went through the holidays not being able to eat and finally told him I could not stand it. He'd asked me to give it some time for them to calm down. Said his mother's took months to calm down. Okay, what do you say.
He has since CHARGED ME to put all kinds of desensitizing stuff on them and then some extra coating. Finally I said I would go mad if I couldn't eat soon. They were only pressure sensitive. He said a root canal was the only solution. So, after five months he starts the root canal, been through first and second steps and my tooth is KILLING ME!!!!!!!!! WORSE NOW THAN EVER! I'm going to go mad if this doesn't end soon. Can you imagine not being able to eat on either side of your mouth AND being in excruciating pain? This guy is nuts (so am I, apparently). I'm calling a specialist tomorrow. Tonight, the gland on the side being worked on is stiff and swollen, under chin feels swollen and the tooth is aching. How? There's no nerve in it? I am so damned angry.
Edited, happy?
I'm telling you, there will be no 3006!
You are confused, In BMW speak schadenfreude means, "You bought a volks wagon! HAHAHAHAHA!"
P.S. I love VolksWagons. I'm in a black humor kind of mood.
Well, I use the term loosely, like, "we're pregnant", and "our money", you know.
You may feel more at home with this one:
Erfolgtraurigkeit
hahahaha
We must translate more often. Much hilarity could come from it.
Let's not beat this to death :)
Morning
Now there's a solution if ever there was one. At least it's my favorite color.
Apparently we are not a twisted and bizarre enough society by your standards, for the word has not invaded our pop lexicon as schadenfruede has.
Your link isn't working for me.
I HATE when my sperm clump together.
You will be mildly amused to find that I am drooling again. All of the nerves have been extracted from the tooth yet it still aches. Would this suffice as a minor fix? However! I am about to drug myself. In half an hour I'll be better than new. You will have to determine if Schadenfreude or mitfreude (which is not the damned word I'm looking for but will do unless it means fake gloves or something) are in order.
A German friend of mine told me ages ago (or I'd remember - snicker) the two words: Schadenfreude and another freude word that meant happiness for others who've had some good fortune. I cannot find anywhere on Google that other wonderful freude, the demand for and usefulness of is evidenced in it's suspicious absence from all google queries. I was thinking we ought to make that the next ubiquitous boutique word and thereby inspire random acts of goodness and kindness right here on ihub! Scary. Low, I know you can do it. FIND ME THAT WORD! Pleaaase!!!
P.S. IF THIS IS GIBBERISH, YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO DELETE. THE PAIN KILLERS STARTED TAKING EFFECT HALFWAY THROUGH THIS POST. HAVE LOST TOTAL DISCRETION, AND FURTHERMORE, THE CAPS JUST HAPPENED, THEY ARE NOT INTENDED. out.
I can't believe how long it took to write this mess. Beddy bye for me.
To put it as succinctly as I can, it left an impression of being an after school special. Albeit a Hollywood one, but the overall effect was sort of like that. It was pedantic and insulting, heavy handed demagoguery.
I don't know it but will try. I guarantee, if you try Quinta de la Rosa, 1996 Vintage Port, which goes for between 15 and 20, you will be a happy man. It's one of my favorite ports, even counting really pricey ones. Something about it - terrific fruit and spice (peppery, grape seed flavor but not the oxidized kind, fresh and clean), best buy out there for ports, imo.
If you do try it, let me know.
I would LOVE to see those. Don't forget.
You got all worked up over that wedding and rightfully so. Do you have pics?
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I wish!
How's things?
It truly is. I love having this opportunity to be so real and share that information with ihubers such as yourself.
I had an ounce of port earlier and it sucked. It was Fonseca Bin 27. Blech!
My legs are longer and my breasts are larger and firmer but other than that, I too see the resemblance. Coincidentally, I have the exact same slippers in which I love doing yard work.
If it worked for you I won't explain why I have come to dislike Crash pretty vehemently. What matters is that you got a lot out of it.
Can you tell me what it made you think about?
This is very disappointing. I just wrote you an elaborate reply and my browser quit on me. Suffice it to say I agree with you regarding Brokeback Mountain. It is the story of homosexuals forced to live lies under the tyranny of an ignorant, brutal and intolerant society. There was a touch of this in V for Vendetta but not nearly as powerful, for it was only a subplot.
The most breathtaking scene, to me, was when Jake's wife was explaining to Ennis how Jake died. The subtlety of her performance gave us just enough to realize she understood perfectly well how and why her husband was murdered and that she had grasped who Ennis was in all of this. The restraint she exercised made it all the more powerful.
The rest of the vaporized rant was about that student and the college he goes to (a 60's experiment) and what I think of the education he's getting. We can both live without me trying to reconstruct that part.
I doubt it.
I honestly can't believe nobody was as insulted as I was by Crash and that it won. Though, I did enjoy it! Funny how you can be both insulted by and yet enjoy a movie. And no, that is not a sign of a great movie. I was gratified to learn that NPR panned it. Dying to hear what you think.
Hi Raz,
I'm going to give Brokeback Mountain just a tad less - 4/5 - but will agree to all that you say very eloquently. I recently had an idealistic, 22 year old Liberal Arts student who is getting the best education money can buy, supposedly, try to convince me that this was not a movie about homosexuality but a movie about adultery - it was tough to keep a straight face. He believed he had hit upon something very clever. He also tried to tell me that Crash was not a movie about racism but a movie about frustration (and of course it also WAS about frustration). It was a funny conversation. I asked him what else are they teaching him at that college. He was testing his wits. He just picked the wrong subjects, me and movies. But then again, our conversation regarding politics and spirituality didn't go that much more smoothly. We had a ball.
The Squid and The Whale - 3/5 - Loved much of it but ending was weak - a copout. Terrific characters. Acting was mint.
Close Your Eyes - 3/5 - Held my attention, made me squirm, I cared. That says a lot for a scary movie. Terrible ending, setup for Close Your Eyes 2 (just a stupid ending). The woman police officer and the hunky parapsychologist were good, she was REALLY good. Lots of weird symbols, pentagramy kind of stuff, eh.
V for Vendetta - 4.25/5 - I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this movie. Could wax but won't. Not in the mood to write but it was amazing.. AMAZING.
I Walk The Line - 3/5 - Not a great movie but lots to love about it. Reese did that singing?! Wow. I even like Johnny Cash more. Now THAT'S love.
Uh, that's schadenfreude, btw. Maybe one day I will look this stuff up before posting like I know what the heck I'm talking about.
With nary a trace on the shelves :(
They must have buried his personal effects with him. At least you have his visage so that he can live on here through you. I have faith that you'll have him frolicking about for years to come. What oh what would derf be doing now? I'm thinking tulips.
