One more important takeaway from today's news. Since pegatron agreed to pay the past due money, one of our intelligent analysts should account for more revenue coming IDCC's way going forward. If they boldly predict that to be Aapl or the likes of it....that will turn the turbo on the stock.
Goodluck All!
vg_future
IDCC should immediately do two things:
1. Complaint to SEC regarding the NEWS agency that reported the higher earnings guidance as "may beat...". I am surprised how these reports manipulate the stock.
2. Teach our PR folks to develop some guts and intelligence so that they don't pepper a perfectly positive news as iffy with an anticipation of even higher numbers. The wording made it sound like even the current higher guidance is doubtful.
How many times should we take the hit on this type of c### before we join the big leagues where analysts fight this type of non-sense without the company having to do anything.
JMHO,
vg_future
Thanks for the update olddog967. Sounds like the parties are talking...taking it as a positive sign.
JMHO,
vg_future
old NEWS. Postyle posted this the day after the earnings. EOM.
Since the loss involved the one time (hopefully) write off (or impairment) of investment, the earings PR could have started with saying "excluding....blah blah blah....loss was X cents". This would have been more pleasing and easily readable.
JMHO,
vg_future
Looks like 200 shares traded at 42. So, probably we might be on our way back to 48s. Goodluck all.
-vg_future
JimLur, there is a rumor out there that Apple might use some sort of bio-key for iPhone. So, we can say atleast some companies out there are looking at this option.
-vg_future
hock1, yes you are right, "uptick" rule. Thanks for correcting.
Beating down with pathetic volume...hopefully we will see similar move up with pathetic volume to make up for this. Ofcourse, ideally, the move up is preferred with heavy volume to show the strength.
I bet downtick rule for shorting would take care of this type of manipulation.
JMHO,
vg_future
Interesting timing by the analyst. Right around the dividend date.
-vg_future
orientbull, good point. Hopefully someone made that connection. While at it, they should also look at the ITC stay denial order.
-vg_future
Stay motion denied is Good NEWS and has just cranked up the heat on Huawei and ZTE (if not NOK). You can call me paranoid, but with the current low volume and interest in the stock, I believe there is definitely an attempt or attempts out there to short IDCC (they don't even need to short a lot due to the low volume) to downplay any positive NEWS.
JMHO,
vg_future
Okay, I see the problem now. Thanks for clarifying. EOM.
loophole73, good post. Probably a stretch, but, would this behavior and partnering with other thieves in behaving so make a good anti-trust case?
-vg_future
Limejuice22, that is exactly why you and I are not Tim Cook. Just kidding.
Apple should have looked at IDCC before settling with NOK (biggest bang for the buck). However, we are not privy to what they paid NOK (thought I heard 1 or 2 billion and ongoing royalties) and we don't know what IDCC is demanding for a buyout and hence cannot say what makes the most business sense for Apple.
JMHO,
vg_future
So, would a winning patent holder get the legal fees from the losing defendants...shouldn't it be a 2-way street.
-vg_future
Thanks dndodd. The next one should be interesting because I believe there was lot of shorting around the earnings inspite of an excellent report.
JMHO,
vg_future
Thanks mmbtx_1. One of them is real FRIEND (HTC one).
-vg_future
my3sons87, your 9.7 is right. Sorry to butt in, but here is the math
125 (cash) + 28.9 (patents) = 153.9 total
22.3 (Dec, 12) + 116.6 (2013 through 2015) + 15 (research funding...Convida) = 153.9 total.
-vg_future
mickeybritt, Your mouth to GOD's ears. EOM.
Thanks a bunch my3sons87. This sounds like a very good NEWS. The OUII taking our side (going as far as infringement should be found) after NOK's reply. Hope the market sees the potential and fights back the manipulators (or nervous selling).
-vg_future
GBR, as loop mentioned, these guys should be cornered with questions like
- how to they license their patents
- what FRAND rate do they charge (particularly when there is no cross-licensing)
- in how many countries do they get their patents "essentialized" (for lack of better word) to get/deserve a world wide license.
JMHO,
vg_future
Okay, thanks Rakitno. EOM
Raktino, I thought Sony-Ericsson (or Sony o be more precise) is most probably covered in the one time payment of 22+ million that gave us the earnings jump. Would it still show up as receivables if it is already accounted for (assuming it is accounted for)?
TIA,
vg_future
So? We never know until we see, right? I remember QCOM halting (in fact even pushing the earnings release by few hours or a day) when they settled with NOK and it was the earnings release day for QCOM. I can quote both types of instances for HALTS...so, I would rather wait for the NEWS before saying bad NEWS.
Goodluck to All Longs!
-vg_future
You think so? What was the patent sale NEWS last year...good or bad?.....you must be kidding. I am surprised how the board members come out with their theories.
-vg_future
That sounds good. THis might be the reason for the jump this morning.
jmho,
vg_future
LTE, Strongly disagree. The PR just said "domestic industry" is the point of contention and it didn't say anything about validity and infringement. But, the fact that they didn't say anything about those tells me that SA didn't take a position on them or was neutral. If it is negative, then IDCC's PR would have covered it like it did the domestic industry issue.
-vg_future
All, The way I read the PR this morning, SA's position in the 2 patents is just from the domestic industry perspective and not from validity and infringement perspective. With the recent CAFC finding in IDCC's favor regarding NOK's appeal under the similar category, IDCC should stand a better chance anyway. Also, as squinge reported this morning...if infringement is found, then ban is recommended...that tells me if domestic industry stuff is addressed, then IDCC would be in a winning position. Now, add the other 5 patents that are not reviewed by SA...this looks like tilting in IDCC's favor.
JMHO,
vg_future
Good one loophole73. The sad thing is that no court or system here in US is taking a hard stand with them and hold them accountable. Some might say that it is business as usual for NOK, but NOK definitely pushes the envelop (even if it is unethical/immoral and mostly it is) and ends up with a good treatment atleast in one or two rounds of the fight.
-vg_future
Okay, thanks. This is the one that I am referring to. Thanks for clarifying.
-vg_future
olddog967, thanks for the update. So, this is different from the summary determination that investors are waiting for (which would end the investigation beacause it finds NOK, Huawei and ZTE in violation), right? I am thinking that people might have mis-intepreted....not that someone needs an excuse to walk the price down today (simple option expiration would explain the move today).
TIA,
vg_future
I know. That is exactly what I said. I am only saying that that specific product domain is completely owned by Sony and we have a license with them now. Good NEWS from any perspective.
-vg_future
This is good. Sony now owns 100% of Sony-Ericsson joint venture. So, in a way IDCC has licensed the Ericsson handset domain. This is better than what is seen on the surface.
JMHO,
vg_future
The_Net, I thought they get re-adjusted not expire. So, if there a call with a strike price of, say 45, it will now be a call with the strike price of 43.5. Am I understanding it wrong? TIA.
-vg_future
FISH21049, to my knowledge, dndodd says so if it is an old article (or atleast accepts if someone provides any correction). So, I trust his post.
Thanks,
vg_future
FISH21049, thanks for the clarification.
Thanks dndodd. Did IDCC buy or sell the patents. It is a bit confusing...lost in translation. Thanks.
-vg_future
IMHO, Nexus 4 success might force LG's hand for an IDCC license renewal. The recent extension in the IDCC and LG court case further adds fuel to my thought. To top it off...a special dividend might indicate new monies coming in. AIMHO.
Goodluck to all.
-vg_future
The rates proposed in this war would help IDCC accomplish its goals. Similar to the $1 per handset amount mentioned by Apple lit the fire, this could help too.
