Neah Power and Novellus go way back... so that reach money we keep hearing about was not wasted.... it changed it Name....
Novellus Systems was acquired by Lam Research Corp. in 2012.
Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ:LRCX) is a trusted global supplier of innovative semiconductor manufacturing equipment and services to the world’s leading chipmakers. Lam’s advanced process technology is transforming the way semiconductor devices are made, with atomic-scale features that are more than 1,000 times smaller than a grain of sand. We collaborate with customers to help them build smaller, faster, and more power-efficient devices that drive technology into everyday life. Lam focuses on solid product performance and value, continuous innovation, and a values-based culture that delivers on its commitments. It is why nearly every chip today is built with Lam technology.
Neah Power stand out as a potential major supplier of this technology, the big name investors in NPWS like Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), The Office of Naval Research, and Novellus Systems (NASDAQ:NVLS-OLD) bring with them far more than the needed research funds, all 3 offer instant, global distribution. Intel and Novellus offer direct sales channels into 90% of the worlds Devices manufacturers from Mobile Phones to Laptops. An Intel or Novellus marketed Fuel Cell would instantly become a multi billion dollar seller and the industry standard, this and a successful test separates Neah Power from the rest of the industry, proven technology combined with a clear distribution method.
Maybe Apple and a supplier -- Lam Research...
Maybe Smoke, maybe some fire, there is going to be a ton of old foundry equipment ready to make batteries...
Apple Likely Driving Globalfoundries Expansion
Globalfoundries may be pushing hard to ramp 14 nanometer capacity to meet production plans for the Apple A9 chip.
pple is likely driving the 14-nanometer ramp at Globalfoundries, but is not a guaranteed customer, in our view.
We believe that Globalfoundries [owned by entities associated with the government of Abu Dhabi[/b]] is pushing hard to ramp 14 nanometer (nm) capacity in an effort to meet production plans for the Apple (ticker: AAPL ) A9 chip. However, we would be surprised if Globalfoundries can achieve required production and yield targets in time to intercept the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus refresh in September. This suggests that Samsung [of South Korea] will support most, if not all, of the 14 nm production for Apple initially. Still, Globalfoundries insisted that the 14 nm ramp will continue regardless of any near-term customer decisions, and that it expects to have enough demand to support its 14 nm production capacity when fully ramped.
We visited Globalfoundries’ Fab 8 in Malta, N.Y., on Wednesday. We observed a very crowded and active campus. There is clearly a lot of activity underway, with equipment move-ins and the 14 nm process ramp-up being the focus. We expect equipment installations to increase over the next two quarters, which should benefit Nanometrics ( NANO ), Lam Research ( LRCX ), Applied Materials ( AMAT ), KLA-Tencor ( KLAC ) and ASML Holding ( ASML ). We would be buyers of Nanometrics on foundry share gains, including at Globalfoundries, and buyers of Lam Research and Applied Materials related to general market-expansion trends and attractive valuation.

PROJECT INNOVATION + ADVANTAGES
In addition to utilizing existing manufacturing technology, the battery uses existing materials for the anode, cathode, the separator and the electrolytes. This reduces the risk of new materials adoption and testing. The technology also includes a unique approach using microchip geometry to control dendrite growth. The understanding acquired through the project will improve the manufacturing of the porous silicon, in particular the metallization process. This will help the company achieve target metrics on cost, and performance, and allow longer cycle lifetime for the battery.
POTENTIAL IMPACT
Economy:
Developing new technologies that can piggyback on older industries preserves jobs, utilizes existing infrastructure and fosters opportunities in advanced manufacturing, including domestic job creation.
Environment:
Electric vehicles reduce pollution associated with gasoline combustion. Electricity storage is also an important complement for renewable electricity systems, which vary in how much power they produce based on local weather conditions.
Security:
Electric vehicles are increasingly cost-competitive with their gasoline counterparts, but consumers will remain hesitant to purchase them until their range grows longer. Higher penetration for such vehicles can dramatically reduce U.S. gasoline consumption and the country's resulting reliance on overseas oil markets.

Applied Materials will admit that their solid electrolyte is not yet as conductive as liquid equivalents, and therefore limits power output. The firm would also like to increase the speed with which their tools can deposit “energy-storing materials” faster, to produce thicker layers that store more energy.

2X Solid State Batteries?
by DEAN SIGLER on 08/16/2014
Applied Materials, located in Sunnyvale, California, designs and makes equipment used in the manufacture of computer chips and other miniature electronic devices. Your editor worked there on assignment from his engineering firm for six months 15 years ago, documenting and verifying the equipment and control systems for their newest facility. Even then, miniature was wild understatement, with the company crafting machinery that could produce 0.18 µm lines in silicon chips. In the last two decades, line widths have shrunk to 0.03 µm, and the number of elements on chips has increased proportionally. This makes nano manufacturing a highly precise endeavor, and one which seems to defy credulity with lower costs for the ever-increasing number of chips being made.

Toyota’s chart showing promise of solid-state battery as interim device between current Li-ion and Li-Air batteries
It’s this type of manufacturing expertise which makes possible the electronic life we lead today and one that relies increasingly on energy storage technology. The very things that make solid state computing possible could produce solid state batteries – an advantageous storage medium – if they can be produced in commercially viable quantities at a reasonable cost. MIT Technolology Reports quotes an Applied Materials scientist on this challenge. “’The thing that’s holding [solid-state batteries] back is materials processing and the cost,’ says Andy Chu, head of product marketing for energy storage solutions at Applied Materials. ‘We’re addressing these problems. That will allow you to take this to high volume.’

Computer chip supplier leases building near GlobalFoundries plant

Applied Materials, one of the world's largest manufacturers of computer chip making equipment, has signed a lease for 17,000 square feet of space in the former Racemark International headquarters in Malta, New York.
A type of battery that could eventually store twice as much energy as a conventional one could be about to move beyond niche applications to wearable devices, phones, and even electric cars.
Solid-state batteries, as they’re called, have been available for a while and are used in some wireless sensors, but they have been too expensive to use elsewhere. Applied Materials, one of the world’s biggest equipment suppliers for the semiconductor and display industries, says it can make these batteries much cheaper. This could clear the way for slimmer, longer-lasting smart watches as well as electric cars with a range similar to gas-powered ones.
In solid-state batteries the liquid electrolytes normally used in conventional lithium-ion batteries are replaced with solid ones, which makes it possible to replace conventional electrodes with lithium metal ones that hold far more energy. Doing away with the liquid electrolyte, which is flammable, can also improve the safety of batteries, which leads to cost and size savings, particularly in electric vehicles, by reducing the need for complex cooling systems (see “TR10: Solid-State Batteries”).
The manufacturing tools shipped so far by Applied Materials, which perform extremely high-precision deposition of materials over large areas, will be used initially for prototyping and demonstrations of solid-state batteries.
Making high-quality electrode and electrolyte materials over large areas has been one of the challenges to making the solid-state batteries economically. The batteries are made by successively depositing electrical contacts, electrodes, and the solid electrolyte that separates them, in much the way that the many layers of a display are deposited. If the solid electrolyte has gaps it can lead to short circuits. Applied Materials says it can overcome this as well as other manufacturing challenges.
“The thing that’s holding [solid-state batteries] back is materials processing and the cost,” says Andy Chu, head of product marketing for energy storage solutions at Applied Materials. “We’re addressing these problems. That will allow you to take this to high volume.”
Applied Materials says customers are using its equipment to make batteries, but it won’t disclose who those customers are. The company says, however, that one of the first commercial applications of its equipment will likely be making batteries for wearable devices, such as smart watches, where size is a serious limitation.
Solid-state batteries can also easily be made in different shapes because you don’t have to worry about containing a liquid electrolyte, making them easier to pack inside a watch, for example. Thin solid-state batteries could even be incorporated into a flexible watch band.
Applied Materials hasn’t disclosed how much solid-state batteries made using its technology would cost, how much energy they would store, or how quickly they could be recharged. One perennial challenge with solid-state batteries has been that the solid electrolyte, which isn’t as conductive as liquid ones, tends to limit power output. Applied Materials says it is working on ways to improve that conductivity by doping the solid electrolyte, much as you would dope semiconductor materials for chips. The company is also working on ways to deposit the energy-storing materials faster, to enable thick layers that store large amounts of energy.

Toyota promises long-range solid-state batteries in EVs by early 2020s
REPORT: AUTO GIANT BETTING ON ADVANCES IN SOLID-STATE BATTERY MANUFACTURE
JULY 25, 2017
Toyota has only recently expressed interest in pure electrics, as opposed to plug-in hybrids, but a new report says the auto giant is planning to leapfrog early electric car leaders by debuting an EV with all-solid-state batteries by 2022. The Japanese daily Chunichi Shimbun (via Reuters) reports that Toyota is focusing on this technology, distinct from lithium-ion batteries, in an effort to market a car with a significantly longer range and a shorter recharge time.
Current EVs use "liquid" lithium-ion batteries, but Toyota, along with a number of startups and suppliers such as Bosch, has been investing in solid-state battery tech that replaces liquid acid electrolytes with solid materials that are less prone to short-circuiting, catching fire or degrading over time, among other desirable properties. The lack of acids in such batteries is expected to bring their manufacturing costs down considerably once the technology is ramped up to production levels, also eliminating the need for the environmentally unfriendly manufacture of lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries also hold the promise of offering roughly twice the energy density of lithium-ion and other "liquid" batteries per pound, which makes their use in EVs attractive once the technology is perfected and commercialized.

Sustainable fuel
Team Fast, a multidisciplinary student team from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e ) have built a prototype bus, which uses formic acid to generate hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Formic acid is basically a sustainable liquid that stores hydrogen but having more benefits compared to hydrogen and electric powered vehicles.
Formic acid – so called because ants (formica in Latin) and other insects can produce it – offers the possibility to store hydrogen easily.
Cost-effective
Max Aerts, head of the development team, said formeric acid was a cost-effective way to create hydrogen as fuel. 'The big advantage of formic acid is that you can put it in the fuel tank', he said. 'The cost of rebuilding a petroal station is relatively low.'
Easily adaptable fuel
Team Fast sees possibilities for these reaction to take place in a car, whereby hydrogen is used to power a fuel cell. For the consumer using formic acid will be like using gasoline. This similarity will also ensure that formic acid can easily be incorporated into the existing fuel infrastructure, next to that, formic acid can be much more widely applied as an energy carrier; solar and wind energy can also be stored in formic acid, and then used when required.
It's expected that the first buses aqdapted for formic acid will be running on the roads within one to four years.

NEAH Power systems ISSUES Letter to Shareholders – March 2016
Posted on March 16, 2016 by Neah Power
Ongoing commercialization and exciting developments at the Company
BOTHELL, WA – March 16, 2016 – Neah Power Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: NPWZ) (OTC: NPWZ) – today issued the following letter to shareholders:
Dear Fellow Shareholders:
We are enthused about the ongoing capitalization and commercialization activities at the Company and the opportunity to share these developments with you. For recent followers of the Company, we want to highlight our key products. We have the PowerChip® anaerobic (non-air) fuel cell, most recently accepted by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of the Government of India. We also have the Formira Hydrogen on Demand (Formira HOD), the most energy dense solution for the generation of hydrogen from a safe liquid source. The BuzzBar Suite is an off-grid charging solution for consumer and commercial applications. We shipped our BuzzBar Gen2 product, and have a Gen3 design that will ship once we close the next round of financing. Finally, we have the PowerChip® Battery under development that has shown industry leading performance. All of our products and technologies are covered by 14 patents, 12 pending patent applications and various trade secrets and know how.
Capitalization: Our previously announced financing of $6M in debt financing, with a $4.75M drawdown at closing has been delayed but the investor updates us constantly. They have reported receiving funds from their investor now for the last eight weeks, and once various banking and fund set up fees have been paid, they have stated they will start funding NEAH. This investor has a very credible multi-year track record of investing in market disrupting emerging technology companies. The details of this investment were previously disclosed in the December 2015 letter to shareholders. The financing is critical to execute on the business plan of the Company. The Company is also evaluating other financing options.
Business update:
NEAH was invited to participate in the White House briefing on Feb 17. We have had various commercialization and capitalization discussions occur based on the networking at that event. As a direct result of attending the White House conference on Climate Change, we have been invited to attend three USTDA Reverse Trade Missions Focused on Energy Storage. The delegates are senior officials from South Africa, Jordon, Brazil, Colombia, India, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam.
I recently visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to explore certain licensing relationships to implement manufacturing and other partnership agreements. There is tremendous interest with the entities I met with to develop UAE into a renewable energy focused hub. We continue to explore and to finalize a mutually beneficial business relationship here.
We are in discussions with the Economic Development Authority of State in the USA regarding relocating to that State to enable their focus on renewable energy and battery storage. We expect this to get finalized in Q2 2016.
We continue to make progress on the previously announced MOU with a South Africa entity. We are in almost daily discussions with them, and are targeting an agreement with them by end of Q2 2016. This will provide a key production pathway for meeting our customer needs.
We have been negotiating a licensing agreement with an entity in India for the BuzzBar Suite and the Formira HOD products. India has been identified as one of the fastest growing markets for off-grid power, and this relationship can enable NEAH products to serve this region.
We have been negotiating a Formira HOD licensing with a group in Taiwan for the Greater China Region. Similar to India, the demand for off-grid power is significant, and continuing to grow in this region. This licensee partner is expected to visit us in the near future which will enable us to complete the anticipated transaction.
Our discussions with the DRDO are ongoing, and we expect to schedule a visit in Q2 2016.
We plan to submit for two separate grants for certain DOE funding with a National Laboratory in the US during the next 30 days.
Finally, the PowerChip® Battery continues to get tremendous interest from consumers and commercial entities. We are negotiating preliminary orders for this product, and due to the outsourced manufacturing model, we believe we can manufacture this very capital efficiently
While our capitalization situation is very challenging, the management is diligently working to complete various capitalization and commercialization activities that will help unlock the potential of the Company. We are pursuing licensing agreements initially since that would enable licensee partners to create manufacturing infrastructure to meet their needs but also the needs of NEAH.
Thank you for your continued support, and best regards,
Chris D’Couto
President & CEO

NEAH POWER SYSTEMS ISSUES LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS – PART II
Posted on December 1, 2015 by Neah Power
Highlights ongoing business initiatives in Part II on Dec 2 2015
BOTHELL, WA – Dec 1, 2015 – Neah Power Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: NPWZ) (OTC: NPWZ) – today issued the following letter to shareholders:
Dear Fellow Shareholders:
Continuing from Part I from yesterday, please see Part II, the update on the various business initiatives
Status of the Shorai Acquisition
Due to the lack of transaction financing, we have decided to postpone the Shorai Acquisition until a larger financing can be closed.
Status of Certain Business Development Initiatives:
Below is a summary of some of the Company’s business development initiatives which, together with other public disclosures made by the Company (including those contained in our most recently published letter to shareholders), should be taken into consideration when considering a loan or investment.
Formira HOD®
NEAH recently released an improved version of the Formira HOD, with BASF, the German Chemical Company, as a preferred supplier for the Formira fuel.
To date, NEAH Power has entered into various teaming agreements with system integrators and manufacturers to incorporate our products into their platforms, as well as resell our products to their customers. In addition, we are presently negotiating an order for several demonstration units with Clear Path Technologies, a leading security and defense system integrator which is developing markets for our fuel cell products in the U.S., Asia Pacific, and MENA regions.
A recently released video including a technical overview and demonstration of our Formira HOD® system can be found at the following link:
DRDO Licensing
NEAH has recently been in high level communications with the DRDO. This has been driven by the recent appointment of the DRDO chief, whose position remained vacant for almost 5 months, since the termination of the previous DRDO chief in Jan 2015. This has created tremendous positive momentum to finalize the licensing proposal that was previously submitted to the DRDO. We are in commercial close at this time, pending a specific date for negotiation and finalization of the licensing agreement.
PowerChip® Battery Update
So far the performance of the battery has exceeded expectations, such that we have begun to discuss developmental and licensing opportunities with leading battery manufacturers, system integrators, and other companies involved in, or seeking entry into, the very lucrative energy storage sector. We are currently in preliminary discussions with consumer and computing companies, battery manufacturers, and parties who have expressed interest in investing directly into the battery opportunity. Any such direct investment into the battery opportunity could potentially lead to a spin out of this technology.
Customer Sales / Licensing Discussions
The Company is also actively engaged in the following sales and licensing initiatives which are expected to deliver results and sales revenues in the near term:
We have a non-binding MOU for a strategic Joint Venture with a South African Consortium comprised of a Provincial Government and Platinum Mining Conglomerates regarding the sale and transfer of a license to produce NEAH Power’s fuel cell products for sale in Africa and the Middle East. Said JV is expected to generate significant revenues, as well as provide a preferred source of raw materials for the production of NEAH Power fuel cells and reformers. This JV is expected to generate short term revenue and ongoing royalty payments creating significant long term value for the Company. We are finalizing dates to visit, and to potentially execute final documents during the visit, for this initiative.
Our Teaming Agreements with Clear Path Technologies, Tectonica (Pvt) Ltd, S4W Technologies, Silent Falcon and Black-I Robotics, to integrate NEAH Power’s power generation and energy storage technologies in mature product lines with established customer bases, while rapidly and cost-effectively developing global markets for its products. Some of the licensing agreements under negotiation, discussed in Part I, developed from these Teaming agreements. Anticipated sales revenues under these teaming agreements is expected to reach $20mm in three years.
We are discussing a strategic Joint Venture with a Street Furniture/Outdoor Advertising company regarding the sale and integration of NEAH Power’s remote power solutions for long-term operation of public advertising displays to be installed under existing municipal contracts. Anticipated sales revenues under this JV is expected to reach $6mm in two years.
Thank you for your continued support, and best regards,

The decision by Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will combine Mubadala Development Company and the International Petroleum Investment Company into a new entity that will hold roughly $135 billion in assets across businesses ranging from computer chips to renewable energy.
Both companies are owned by Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the seven-state Emirates federation, which includes the Gulf commercial hub of Dubai.

CRITICAL NEED
Battery technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in the past decade, but current lithium-ion battery chemistries based on a high-energy cathode and a lithium-intercalation anode, such as graphite, are reaching some of their limits when it comes to providing high-energy-density power at a low cost per unit with low capital cost for production.
Replacing graphite with lithium metal or lithium alloy is a viable method to increase energy density. Neah Power Systems has patented a three-dimensional porous silicon based lithium-metal battery that has demonstrated 1,500 watts per liter of volume and 500 watts per kilogram. This battery uses older generation computer chip manufacturing technology that is widely available throughout the world, enabling a low cost, which the company targets at $150 per kilowatt hour in high volume production. Such a low price point would make the battery applicable across industries, from small devices such as cell phones to larger applications for stationary power, automotive and grid-scale back up. Such a foundry model allows a low capital-cost ramp up into high volume production, with very high quality control. Through the SBV Pilot, the company will utilize Argonne National Laboratory staff and expertise to determine the optimal metallization scheme for porous silicon as well as reliable and reproducible processes and insights into possible causes of degradation, capacity fade and dendrite growth.
]Advanced Manufacturing: Eleven projects will focus on improving manufacturing processes specifically by developing more efficient production methods for alloys, microchannel heat exchangers, semiconductors, extreme ultraviolet materials, nanocrystals, and lithium ion batteries, among others. Six national laboratories will work with small businesses to validate their work, help scale-up production methods, and improve the efficiency of existing manufacturing processes[/quote].
