Tesla To Start LFP Battery Production in Nevada Using Equipment From China's CATL
Published: 1 Feb 2024
For now, Tesla is using 2170 cells from Panasonic to produce the Model Y in the US and 18650 cells (also from Panasonic) for the Model S and Model X. It also imports a lot of cells and battery components from China. The few 4680 cells it makes at Giga Texas are all destined for the Cybertruck. Although Tesla claims that the battery cells are not a bottleneck, we know that Tesla would like to have more 4680 cells available. This will not be possible until Panasonic starts producing the larger cells later this year. Panasonic is also installing additional 2170-cell production lines at a new battery factory in Kansas.
If ternary battery cells finally become ubiquitous toward the end of 2024, lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells will still have to be imported from China for now. This means no tax credit for the Model 3 RWD or other models using the cheaper battery cells. Tesla is aware of that and is considering starting US production of LFP cells in Nevada.
According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla will buy the equipment from CATL, the world leader in LFP cell production, and install it in a new facility in Sparks, Nevada. Tesla will have full control of the facility and cover 100% of the costs, avoiding the kind of scrutiny Ford faced when it announced LFP production a year ago. Ford wanted to license the LFP technology from CATL. Tesla, on the other hand, only buys the equipment. The Chinese manufacturer's personnel will help set up the equipment but will not be involved in operating the LFP production line.
The evolution of petrolithium
Critical Raw Materials
26th January 2024
Petrolithium may have first been coined in 2016 by Jared Lazerson, CEO and founder of MGX Minerals, a lithium mining startup company that once promoted the chemical extraction of lithium in Alberta oilfield brines. The following year, Lazerson formed a company bearing the name (PetroLithium Corporation of America) to acquire mineral leases in US oilfields. The term has since been used to describe other companies, including E3 Lithium and Standard Lithium, which are similarly focused on extracting lithium from North American oilfield brines.
Discovery of petrolithium
Although the term and applications of petrolithium may have emerged more recently, the concept has been around for decades. The first and foremost publication on this topic was the iconic Geochemistry of Oilfield Waters (Gene Collins, 1975), which documented the presence of lithium in multiple oilfield reservoirs across nine US states.
Given Collins’ reporting and the anticipated future demand for lithium by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), companies like Dow Chemical took note. According to International Battery Metals (IBAT) founder John Burba, concurrent to Collins’ work, Dow was also looking at lithium in oilfield brines for the purpose of developing a lithium-based battery, which others were also seeking to develop.
The impact of Dow chemical
Given Dow’s chemical plants and research facilities located near key oilfields, the company was uniquely positioned to conduct brine research during the 70s. In one case, Dow operated a chemical production plant in Magnolia, Arkansas (later acquired by Albemarle Corporation), sourcing bromine from the Smackover Formation.
A petrolithium breakthrough
Although DLE has yet to reach commercialisation in a petrolithium capacity, several companies have successfully tested DLE pilot plants utilising oilfield brines containing economic quantities of lithium, including the previously mentioned E3 Lithium (Alberta) and Standard Lithium (Arkansas). Startups such as Anson (Utah), and Prairie Lithium (Saskatchewan) are also testing the petrolithium potential of certain oilfields.
Even Burba’s IBAT made a petrolithium comeback after testing the same oilfield brine he had tested 40 years ago for the first DLE pilot plant. During a brief partnership with Galvanic Energy, IBAT tested the Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas and again proved DLE has the potential to extract lithium from oilfield brines, but this time with favourable economics due to the historic rise of lithium prices.

The cost comparison of Amprius Technologies Inc’s silicon anode batteries to other lithium-ion batteries depends on several factors. Let’s explore this further:
Initial Manufacturing Costs:
Silicon anode batteries, due to their innovative design, may have higher initial manufacturing costs compared to traditional graphite anode batteries. The use of silicon as an anode material requires specialized production processes.
However, Amprius’ existing commercial manufacturing processes make it a practical choice for scalability, potentially offsetting some of the initial costs.
Long-Term Cost Efficiency:
Despite higher initial costs, silicon anode batteries can offer significant long-term benefits. Their higher energy density means that fewer batteries are needed to achieve the same energy storage capacity.
This can lead to reduced overall system costs (including installation, maintenance, and replacement) over the battery’s lifetime.
Application-Specific Considerations:
The cost comparison varies based on the specific application:
Consumer Electronics: For devices like smartphones and wearables, cost sensitivity is high. Amprius’ technology may be more competitive if it provides substantial performance gains.
Electric Vehicles (EVs): In the automotive industry, cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) is critical. While silicon anode batteries offer advantages, automakers carefully evaluate the trade-offs between performance, safety, and cost.
Grid Energy Storage: Here, total cost of ownership and cycle life matter. Silicon anode batteries’ extended cycle life and energy density could make them cost-effective over time.
Competitive Landscape:
Amprius competes with other companies working on advanced battery technologies:
Enovix Corporation: Enovix’s 100% silicon anode batteries target premium smartphones and consumer electronics. Their cost-effectiveness depends on mass production and market adoption.
QuantumScape Corporation: QuantumScape focuses on solid-state lithium-metal batteries. While their technology offers high energy density, cost challenges remain.
Other Silicon Anode Innovators: Amprius is not alone in the silicon anode space. The cost competitiveness depends on each company’s unique approach and manufacturing capabilities.
Overall Assessment:
Amprius’ technology, with its impressive energy density and performance, has the potential to be cost-competitive in specific applications. As the industry evolves and economies of scale kick in, we may see further cost reductions.
In summary, while initial costs may be higher, Amprius’ silicon anode batteries offer compelling advantages that could translate into cost savings over the long term, especially in applications where performance and energy density are critical .

Amprius Technologies Inc stands out in the field of lithium-ion batteries due to its innovative approach and remarkable performance. Let’s delve into how Amprius’ technology compares to other lithium-ion batteries:
Energy Density:
Amprius utilizes silicon anodes in its batteries, which can store up to 10 times more lithium than traditional graphite anodes. As a result, Amprius batteries deliver up to 100% higher energy density compared to standard lithium-ion batteries12.
This means that Amprius batteries provide more energy and power while maintaining a smaller size and weight.
Performance:
Amprius’ silicon nanowire anode technology enables batteries with:
Higher energy density
Higher power density
Extreme fast charging capabilities
Superior performance over a wide range of operating temperatures3.
Independent test labs have verified that Amprius’ lithium-ion cells, based on the Silicon Anode Platform, offer roughly two times higher energy density than state-of-the-art commercially available lithium-ion cells4.
Commercialization Timeline:
Amprius’ technology is already in use, with its first products deployed in the aerospace and defense industry. In contrast, some other technologies, such as Li-metal, are still in the process of scaling up for high-volume production1.
While both silicon and Li-metal offer similar performance improvements, Amprius’ existing commercial manufacturing processes make it a practical choice for scalability1.
Specific Competitors:
Enovix Corporation: Enovix designs and manufactures lithium-ion batteries with a 100% silicon anode, aiming to become a large battery supplier for premium smartphones and other consumer electronics1.
SES AI Corporation: SES is developing a lithium metal battery with a proprietary solvent-in-salt electrolyte for the automotive industry, with joint development agreements with GM, Hyundai, and Honda1.
QuantumScape Corporation: QuantumScape is developing a lithium metal battery with an anode-free cell design and a proprietary solid electrolyte material for the automotive industry1.
In summary, Amprius Technologies’ silicon anode batteries offer game-changing performance, making them a strong contender in the race to revolutionize energy storage and electric mobility15.
