I have never been to an Apple Store.
There has never been one close enough to me for me to make the trip. Someday there will be, and I will visit.

Issues with Windows
1. Viruses for Windows: tens of thousands, a large portion of which can still effect current versions.
To be fair, I use Windows 2k Pro at work. I do a auto download of the virus defintion file automatically every day at noon. Since I started doing that, I have had no problems with viruses. In the decad and a half I have used Windows, I have had two viruses, one troublesome to the IT stafff who took care of it.

Apple Store in Portland
The Computer Store, an Apple only retailer with locations in OR and WA does a fine job. I shop at the one in Tigard, and there is one near the Lloyd Center. I do not buy computers there, because I can only get the educ. discount at the college I work at, but they are very helpful and have bought books and software there.

Blue: for the record, the wedding is the 27th
Aren't you a little young for 26 previous weddings?:).
Having been married for 25+ years, in a relationship that seems to grow better, more comfortable (and at times more humurous) with the years, I wish for you all the happiness that Kathy and I have had with each other.
Ron, not that there has not been a rough spell or three :)
I have a request
In keeping with netiquette back before everyone apparently decided to do away with it.
Please stop discussing the content of private, off-board communication in a public venue. It is bad form. In my opinion it is rude and violates the trust of the person who sent the communication.
I have belonged to e-mail discussion groups where it resulted in immediate temporary suspension of posting priveleges.

Go Apple.
remember that? Get away from personalities. The type of interactions that led many of us away from another place can be easily dealt with by the moderators here.
Personal attacks--click--zap. Lively discussion and spirited disagreement on the merits--A-OK.
People you don't care for, who post divisive and silly stuff that does not meet the standard for click-zap by the moderators--ignore them. I will not hesitate to, and will be far quicker on that button here than I have been in the past. People who seem drawn to and unable to control the urge to continuosly respond to people to post divisive and silly stuff, I won't be reading them for long either.
We, as users of this board have a power that the moderators do not have. Our decision on whom to ignore are not reviewable by an iHub administrator. We control the nature and character of this board through our words, and our decisions about whom to respond to, whom to ignore and etc..
Not every movement of people from one place to another is an exile. Some are good and legitimate choices made by reasonable people who are looking for pro-social behavior rather than its polar opposite.

Post, don't post; stay here, outta here, just please don't use too much bandwidth dealing with meta-issues and issues of board admin :).
That is one of the reasons many of us are outta there and over here, in my opinion--too much bandwidth spent dealing with trivia and trivials. That is one aspect of other boards that I see no need to replicate here.
If we can avoid replicating that piece of board DNA, then we can help provide evidence of rapid .net evolution.

And Double market share part 2
http://www.macnet2.com/more.php?id=362_0_1_0_M5
Why Apple will double its market share in 2004
http://www.macnet2.com/more.php?id=362_0_1_0_M5
How do you explain to people that although the Mac OS comprises only a small portion of the market the truth is Apple has won the OS war? I cannot imagine Microsoft ever catching up with OS X, even if Microsoft tossed out Longhorn and started from scratch there is simply too much of a spread for them to ever surpass what Apple has already created.
I don’t care a wit if Apple’s first G5’s are the fastest personal computers or not. Anyone who can look forward a year can see that Apple has adopted a whole new architecture that has set in motion the edict that Apple will never again take a back seat in the speed wars.
Apple's iSight produces superior images
That is probably because of the iSight's two aspherical elements, F/2.8 wide aperture and 24-bit color depth. Plus, the iSight's lens automatically focuses from 2 inches to infinity for the sharpest picture possible.

The Apple view down under
In other words, unless you're a digital video fanatic, there's not much reason to rush out and buy a G5 for home use, unless you measure your virility in gigahertz.

I want to buy the music I want to how I want to.
If I want one song, I want to be able to buy it. If I want a whole album, I want to be able to buy it. I have bought 55 songs from the music store. One album, 16 songs.
I will not buy from artists who insist I buy a whole album unless I want the whole one. I will not buy a whole CD in order to have 2 songs.
The consumer has some power in this, you know. This is artistic freedom, which I support, and there is consumer choice, which I also support.

IIJI and greed
I'm not greedy, I just want to make a ton of money on it :). Actually, mine was a small stake to begin with and I sold half of it yesterday. Despite today's run and the potential for future gains, I am not unhappy about that. It is the second stock over the past month in which I have been able to regain 75% to all of my initial investment in a relatively short time period and now I can let it ride without worrying as much about risk.
I like that.
Ron
Anyone going to aapltalk for the early close today? eom.
dillett: iiji and new PB
. All I wanted to do with IIJI was double my money and that looks like a lock. next time it ticks past 7 it's turning into a new TiPB
So, its over 8 now--have you ordered your new PB yet? Which model are you gonna get? :)

The RB Board and AAPL stock
<i<Folks, the iHub community was never intended to replace RB, but merely to provide an alternative
Intentions don't always work out. I looked at the RB board this morning. It has replaced it. RB is dead, long live RB. I would suggest that this board is is exactly a replacement for RB for many of us. I, for one, and delighted with that.
Onto AAPL. This summer will be pretty much wasted, IMO, in terms of share price appreciation--unless a large number of individuals and institutions decide this is a good price to get in for the last quarter of this calendar year and 2004-05, when many of us feel like the revenue picture for Apple will improve considerably.
Factors I see going for Apple in the 4th quarter: delivery in numbers of G5 computers, Panther upgrades, continued sales of peripherals/digital devices (iPod iSight), likely introduction of enhancements to iPod (AV) and possibly another use or two for digital devices, iPhone or equivalent.
Other possibilities are international Music Store sales, iTune and Music Store for Windows.
What I plan to do is wait for a drop in the share price of 5-10%. As always, what I do when depend, in part, on how my other investments are doing.

Inviting
There is no one I care to invite whose email I have. If I had Zanny's, I would let him know we are here.
Ron
Hi Bootz
Good to see you appear here, hear?

Board admin
In other words, we're hoping for self-censorship rather than Admin censorship.
And is self-censorship does not happen? What standards should be used for self or Admin censorship? For example, some of us have made political posts. I am one of those. I have refrained from doing so more often than I have done so :), but I imagine that some who think our current administration is doing all the right things might wish that those who don't would engage in or be censored.
Obviously, this is a public and open board and all who wish to join in are welcome and encouraged to do so. If, however, individuals who have been openly contemptuous of the greater good in other fora are asked to join by you or other posters, it should be with the understanding that what might have been the norm elsewhere isn't the norm here.
I have belonged to mailing lists/on-line communities where an introductory post was sent to new joiners. It included statements about the purpose of the community, acceptable conduct, some examples of unacceptable conduct (quoting private messages on-list, personal attacks when in disagreement rather than reasoned and reasonable arguments based on the particular issue and like that),
Maybe such an introductory post should be considered by the esteemed administrators of this discussion group. If I invite anyone to join us here, and I have not so far, an administrator drafted statement about the norms referenced above might be useful. Maybe you and Tom could write up a draft and submit it to the board for our comments. That could be helpful.
Respectfully submitted
Ron, a humble and grateful iHub customer
Fi,
I have never understood what there is about the flies that attracts them to her *shrug*, I just don't get it.
Decided to sell
1/2 of the IIJI I hold, covering a big chunk of the cost of all the shares, the same thing I did with WHT a week or two ago. Still wary of holding any individual stock for too long--let the winners run be darned, or was that it is never a bad thing to take some profits :)
dilleet
No matter who one was or what one posted on RB, one was accused of one thing or another--so don't worry about being a dirty little stock touter :).
I hope IIJi continues to do well also, and am tempted to sell here for a quick 40% gain. Did that with SINA, selling at between 9 and 10 and never looking back, not even when it dipped below 7 one day.
Ron
I think any of us
should feel free to tell anyone we want to about this board--and I also think it is fine for anyone to encourage or discourage the provision of such information. I would welcome Zanny here, especially since some of his posts can be zapped by the list starter or his noble assistant.
Ron
No doubt there will be competition in the on-line music business
And this goes beyond that to the delivery of copyrighted content in addition to music. As long as Apple provides a reasonable way for customers to access their services and expands their customer base (internationally and by OS) and provides compelling digital devices for the enjoyment of that content away from desktop/laptop computers and other devicies, like discman, then I think they will do their share of business.
As far as Macintosh users, you never had it so good. It is a nice slogan. Fortunately, Apple as a company is expanding beyond its base of Mac users with other products, such as the iPod and, when it is ready, the commercial sale of digital content to the other 95% of computer users. While it may never be a huge part of their business, diversity of revenue stream is a good thing, and as many are wont to remind us, it will attract customers to the iPod and Mac platforms.
Ron
They also pay a subscription fee on Real's service of about $10 a month.
Pricing pressure, yeah right. Of course, iTMS is not available for 95% of computer users.
Ron
Lets see soem of those shirts on live models :). eom
Yofal,
I don't follow open source GUI development, but I think there has been some level of push for a more consumer friendly interface for some time. OS X has it, but at a cost that many won't spring for. Let them eat XWindows or GNU, I guess :).
Ron
Linux and OS X
I have been concerned about the effect of Linux on demand for OS X. I expressed that once or twice over on RB, and Ruddy usually responded with the opinion that the growth of Linux was a good thing for Apple--that anything putting a dent in MS OS hegemony was.
I think both of those opinions can co-exist and some of both will happen, but I do not know which opinion will dominate in terms of the marketplace. I do know that I consider Linux, particularly as it moves toward the desktop, to be a competitor (real or potential) or the OS X.
Ron
cotton,
I have a small cde stake. Will hold till I die or silver prices go up, whichever comes first :)
RNWK flying today, don't have any of that.
JimQuince's first posts here were about AAPL and his purchase of AAPL along with his target price.
I asked a question on this board about a natural gas stock.
I think it is a bit early to be jumping to conclusions about JimQuince's post in reponse to a post of mine.
Ron
Hi Ib, another one sneaking in and posting like they had always been here :).
Good to see ya.

Netscape has had popup blocking and tabbed browing in Windows for some time now--since 4,7, I believe. It is what I use exclusively at work. Tabbed browsing rules, and I did not make the nearly full time switch to Safari until it was available for Safari
lowtech, it is so
wonderful to see you again.
Ron
chensk,
No I have not, but the printer worked fine with Jag for the past 11 months. Something has happened, I suspect with permissions, that is fracking up the printer and the ability to install programs. I need to diagnose and fix that.
I tried CUPS with a printer, an old DECLaser, but never got it to work, but then that was 11 months ago.
thanks, I'll put the suggestion in the list :).
roni, dumb question but
do you have Norton Disk Doctor or Disk Warrior? You probably would have used one of them if you did, huh?
Don't have them for X, had DW for 9.
Have you started up from the OSX disk and run disk repair?
Yes, the disk was ok. Permissions need repaired everytime I restart the compute--at least something gets fixed each time.
I gave away my Missing Manual when I installed Jaguar. Guess I'll buy one for Jag and go digging around in System Preferences.
Thanks--and I'll bet you will look good in the Mini. Hot babe in a Hot little car--an almost irresistible combination

Less noisy
Yes, but if you get to missing it, we can go

Major iMac problems
Printer won't print. Won't preview. Get a message saying printer error in some apps, in others it just won't do diddly. It will print a test page from the Epson print utility, but nothing else.
Installer won't work. Tried to install a program, got a installer quit message after typing in my password. Happened on two different programs
repaired permissions multiple times. Ran disk first aid.
frack. Frack. FRACK!!
Boy,this is not fun.
So I upgrade to Virex 7.2 via .Mac so that I can get virus definition files automagically. First time it tried it told me I did not have enough disk space. I have 59 gigs of disk space.
Any one run into to this or have an explanation for it?
Ron
Thanks for image of the day, and thank all of you
for making this a neat place to be. I appreciate it.

Wrong analyst?
Well, anyone reading this thread would know that the first fella was not an analyst, he was a fund manager, while the second was clearly identified as an analyst, both in the headline and the body of the story.
I don't get the wrong part, but then, to paraphrase Senator Sam, Ah'm jest a simple country researcher :).
