hi dubi, good evening. nice updates. anything worth a toot for a profit?
No, Clearwire is not going public today.
You mean Clearwire which is still private. Clearwire builds citywide wireless systems like MOBL who uses WiFi & WiMAX.

WIMAX is a wireless technology like WiFi, not a company.
Louis Navellier - Editor of Emerging Growth said in an e-mail to me today...This ten bagger leader of the WI Max Revolution goes public with its earnings after the closing bell tonight. Could this be the launching of the Clearwater IPO?
As it seems now, it is at least 6 months before IPO,
if at all. I'll post it here when i have more info.

Nortel to employ Israeli technology in new WiMax chip
12.10.06 | 10:13 By Raphael Fogel
Telecoms giant Nortel Networks will base its new, upgraded WiMax wireless network product line on Israeli startup Runcom Technologies' products.
Nortel revealed its new line of WiMax wireless technology, MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), at the WiMax World conference in Boston this week. MIMO is an advanced multiple antenna technology.
WiMax technology allows wireless connections of networks and individual devices at much greater distances than do other wireless technologies common today.
The companies claim that their new technologies will triple network speeds and double the amount of data that can be transmitted, because Nortel's MIMO technology is able to accommodate several input and output paths simultaneously.
The technology can deliver three times the speed and efficiency at one third the cost compared to competing WiMAX solutions that use alternative technologies, the companies said.
Runcom was founded in 1997 by Dr. Zion Hadad. Its 2005 sales reached $11 million, and it expects sales to double this year, and to double again in 2007, said Israel Koffman, Runcom's vice president of marketing.
The company's headquarters are in Rishon Letzion. In 2000, Israeli venture capital firms Vertex and Concord invested $8.5 million in Runcom, at a company value of $56 million after the money.
"The strength of MIMO is that it packs 300 percent more performance across the same area as competing WiMAX offerings, requiring fewer cell towers for more efficient transmission of communications," said Hadad, founder and chief executive officer of Runcom.
The improved technology is expected to be used in applications such as television on the Internet (IPTV) and Internet telephony, as well as high-bandwidth mobile applications like VoIP, video conferencing, mobile video over large areas, streaming music, video, Internet access and multimedia.
According to Nortel, the new products are intended for both consumers and network carriers.

Samsung Sets out to Conquer WiMAX Worldwide
By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor
April 06, 2006
Telecommunications and digital convergence technologies manufacturer Samsung announced today plans for WiMAX development and deployment in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
At the CTIA Wireless 2006 trade show, the company is unveiling an IMS solution enabling global availability of converged telecommunications services using a WiMAX network.
In a press release, Samsung said the latest additions to its product portfolio are two elements that will be used to support the IMS/WiMAX solution: Radio Access Station (RAS) and Access Control Router (ACR).
The standard RAS—built for large-scale deployments—features a smart antenna that uses the 802.16e interface protocol to provide broadband data rates of up to 30 Mpbs per sector, supporting three to six sectors.
RAS is also available in a Mini version, capable of 20W power output and small enough to mount on ceilings, walls, or poles.
Samsung’s ACR contains IP-based radio access network architecture based on the IMS core network. It enables mobility to be efficiently managed using a centralized control structure.
ACR also facilitates seamless wireless connectivity, minimizing both handover latency on Layer 2 over air, and bearer path switch delay.
Both products—the RAS and the ACR—are core elements of Samsung’s IMS-network-based WiMAX platform, designed to deliver high-speed services such as voice, video conferencing and instant messaging to rural and suburban locations not accessible by other technologies.
Samsung said its WiMAX solution also will create broadband “hot zones” in more densely populated areas.
The company is now working with telecommunications providers around the globe to deliver wireless high-speed broad band services capable of voice, data and video at speeds up to 75 mph with a 20-30 Mpbs data rate.
Samsung said it’s allying with Korea Telecom in South Korea, Sprint Nextel in the United States, TVA in Brazil, KDDI WBB in Japan, and BT in Great Britain, and recently partnered with Telecom Italia to successfully demonstrate WiBro capabilities at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
Additionally, the company’s commercial Mobile WiMAX service is currently available through Venezuela’s Omnivision cable network.
“As one of the world’s largest telecommunications leaders, Samsung is changing the wireless experience by helping create a sense of seamless mobility,” said Kitae Lee, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business, in a press release.
Samsung noted that Mobile WiMAX make possible a broad range of converged services, delivered from a single IP-based network, including:
- VoIP
- Video telephony
- Multimedia messaging and conferencing
- Location and telematic services
- Multimedia push and demand services
To help drive these applications, Samsung now is promoting two WiBro phones—the H1000 clamshell and the M8000 smart phone—and a PCMCIA card that can be used in laptops and Tablet PCs.

Sacramento's neighbor to the east, Folsom, is also looking into offering wireless Internet access in public places but with a different technology. It is testing what is called Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access or WiMax. The system relies on one or a few transmitter towers with greater range than Wi-Fi's multiple transmitters. Intel, Folsom's largest employer, is teaming with the city in a pilot WiMax program.
"With the current level of service provided to our residents, Wi-Fi didn't seem like it was really a market here in Folsom," said the city's Joe Luchi. "So our consultant recommended we look instead at WiMAX by creating this canopy over the city." [#msg-10563955]

"Super-WiMax" startup promises handsets
Grass-roots strategy for controversial xMax technology
Peter Judge, Techworld
28 March 2006
xG Technology, whose controversial low-power xMax wireless technology was demonstrated in November, has announced plans for a consumer handset by the end of the year.
“In the US, we plan to utilise a grassroots marketing campaign to roll xMax out on a viral basis,’ said xG CEO Rick Mooers. The handset will enable low-cost VoIP providers, similar to the garage-based ISPs of the 1990s, he explained. To get things going and provide something useful before the xMax base-stations appear, the handset will also operate over Wi-Fi and have an Ethernet socket, said the company.
xMax uses lower power, and can operate in lower-frequency spectrum than other radio technologies such as WiMax, according to the company, which has so far given partial explanations of how it works. The technology uses "single-cycle modulation"; it also uses a narrowband timing signal to synchronise and decode a wide-band low-power signal similar to that used in ultra-wideband. In February , xMax' inventor, Joe Bobier promised products by June.
It now seems that an enterprise version of the VoIP handset will appear in the summer, with a consumer version to follow by the end of the year.
The technology can send 40Mbit/s of data over 15 miles, using less than 1W of power, xG claims, and has been certified to meet FCC radio emissions limits. This means that small independent operators will be able to set up very cheap base stations, and provide connection to the Internet for VoIP services, the company promises. "Small companies, institutions, and communities can deploy wireless VOIP networks for thousands rather than millions of dollars," says the release.
The handsets and base stations will be made by contract manufacturers. Although the technology only has approval in the US, he said it might be rolled out elsewhere first: “We’re a US company and would prefer to deploy the first systems here but there has been significant international interest and it may be more prudent to first enter the marketplace in another country.”

Chicago Gears Up for Wireless Broadband
Friday February 17, 6:15 pm ET
By Dave Carpenter, AP Business Writer
Chicago Jumps on Wi-Fi Bandwagon by Launching Effort to Offer Wireless Broadband
CHICAGO (AP) -- The nationwide rush to go wireless appears poised to extend to its biggest city yet. Chicago is launching an effort to offer wireless broadband, city officials said Friday, jumping on the Wi-Fi bandwagon as similar initiatives proceed in Philadelphia, San Francisco and smaller cities.
Chicago has hundreds of Wi-Fi hotspots in places like coffee shops, bookstores and libraries, where anyone can walk in, sit down and connect to the Web. Hoping to extend that wireless blanket to all 228 square miles, the city plans to ask technology companies this spring to submit proposals for the project.
While it's too soon to say how the system would operate, the goal is to make Internet access "broad and affordable" for residents and heighten Chicago's appeal for businesses and tourists alike, according to Chris O'Brien, the city's chief information officer.
The city did not specify goals for how much the system would charge for access. In Philadelphia, EarthLink Inc. is building a citywide network that will charge a wholesale rate of $9 a month to Internet service providers that would then resell access to the public at an undetermined price.
"We think it's important for residents of the city and tourists and businesses to have lots of different ways to connect," O'Brien said. "For a city as big as Chicago, with the vibrant business community and diverse citizen base that we have, you want to make sure all kinds of technology are available to them as they work and enjoy entertainment options."
If all goes smoothly, the system could be running as soon as 2007, O'Brien said. That would all but certainly leave the city behind Philadelphia, which hopes to have its entire system in place late this year or early next year. But the size of a Chicago network would dwarf Philadelphia's planned 135-square-mile network or anything now in place.
Currently, the biggest municipal Wi-Fi network is the all-free MetroFi in the south San Francisco Bay area at 35 square miles, according to Wi-Fi expert Glenn Fleishman. By spring, that title will be passed to one covering nearly 110 square miles in the neighboring Phoenix suburbs of Tempe and Chandler, Ariz., he said.
Cities' race to get into municipal broadband is being increasingly embraced by Internet service providers, since most cities are enlisting private companies to help build the wireless systems rather than doing it on their own. EarthLink created a division last year to solicit deals similar to Philadelphia's with the 50 largest cities.
Cities besides Philadelphia that have put Wi-Fi projects out for proposals in the last four months alone, according to EarthLink, include Portland, Ore.; San Francisco, Anaheim, Pasadena and Long Beach, Calif.; Denver and Aurora, Colo.; Minneapolis; Milwaukee; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Pittsburgh; Arlington, Va.; and Brookline, Mass.
Rather than viewing the cities' efforts as competition, said Don Berryman, president of EarthLink's municipal networks division: "This allows us to build our own network and provide broadband service anywhere we want and not have to work through the Bell company or the cable company, so it gives us a lot of freedom."
Chicago's main phone company, AT&T, says it similarly would not be opposed to a city-initiated effort.
"AT&T always has believed that the best approach is to stimulate investment in broadband," spokesman Rick Fox said. "As long as you're working with the private sector, that's a good thing."
The idea of a citywide Wi-Fi network got a big thumbs-up from several Chicagoans who were sitting in cafes with their laptops Friday.
"I'm always searching for Internet hotspots," said Beibei Que, a law student getting in some work at a coffee shop. "I like to have the Net at my fingertips wherever I go."
Katy Harper, who works mostly out of her home, said she would welcome the chance to get online elsewhere. "It's nice to be able to go out and sit somewhere and get connected," she said.
Chicago officials haven't yet committed to specific goals for the project, but they don't want to spend city funds. They have been closely watching Philadelphia's project, including its priority on low user costs and its intent to ensure that more computers and training programs are available for low-income residents.
"Our main mission is to increase access and help overcome the digital divide," said Robert Bright, board chairman of the Wireless Philadelphia nonprofit group overseeing that initiative.
Fleishman said building a municipal Wi-Fi network as big as the ones envisioned in Philadelphia and Chicago could be troublesome. He cited issues surrounding the need for high-powered antennas and interference from existing Wi-Fi networks.
"Once you get into dense urban environments, it's not that it won't work but it's more problematic," he said. "Nobody's built a network of this size."

Aspen Communications Offers City Wide WiMAX Infrastructure in Dallas and Fort Worth
2/3/2006 7:17:01 AM
DALLAS, Feb 03, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Aspen Communications has announced the rollout of a city wide infrastructure for wireless broadband service providers beginning in mid-March. The company is hoping to further capitalize on the spread of the popular WiMAX wireless technology which, among other features is bringing broadband access to rural communities where conventional cable and dsl is not currently available.
WiMAX is an acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access which uses the 802.16 spectrum to wirelessly send information. WiMAX technology is considered better than WiFi because it can provide higher speeds over longer distances (up to 30 miles) and may be less prone to interference and line of sight issues.
Aspen has created an initial network of 12 buildings and towers (all having higher elevations and/or roof-tops to provide for a more expansive coverage area) and connected these sights with over 380 miles of fiber across Dallas and Fort Worth. The initial network rollout will use the Gigabit Ethernet protocol to provide up to 1000 Mbps speeds. They hope to have twice that many buildings online by fourth quarter 2006.
By bundling a turn-key solution that includes back-haul, Internet access, network services, co-location, and WiMAX tower sites all with one vendor, Aspen thinks that they can attract some of the exploding Dallas Fort Worth WiMAX market. One exciting feature for wireless service providers is they will be able to allocate bandwidth anywhere across the Aspen network with only incremental charges, as opposed to having to purchase new circuits at every location. Currently, Aspen has six wireless service providers using their network.
"Running fiber between high rise buildings, carrier hotels and potential WiMAX tower locations is not the core focus of our wireless service provider clients," says Aspen's Sales & Marketing Director Rocky Ahmann. "Our turn-key solution takes care of the back end and lets them focus on what they do best -- servicing their customers."
Aspen's network of fiber and wireless facilities currently spans Dallas, North Dallas, Fort Worth and East Texas; and in February they will light McKinney, Grapevine and Frisco.
"In a few months, we will be able to deliver a 10 Mbps connection on a 300 foot tower in McKinney for under $1500 per month which is unheard of today," says Ahmann.
He believes that this will lower costs for the consumers while at the same time improving their connectivity. Wireless is commonly used in rural communities where cable and dsl is not available; however, new and innovative technologies such as WiMAX will offer a myriad of potential applications for rural and metro areas.
The cities of Philadelphia, Addison and Anaheim are also currently deploying a WiMAX infrastructure for their cities.

Has WiMAX turned a corner?
Joanie Wexler, Network World
31/01/2006 14:00:51
Now that the broadband wireless industry can boast some bona fide WiMAX Forum-certified products - with several more on deck for certification testing - will WiMAX services suddenly proliferate as an enterprise-class, last-mile access alternative?
Not overnight. There is still much carrier testing ahead using the certified products.
The WiMAX Forum announced its first few product certifications during the Wireless Communications Association International's symposium in San Jose earlier this month. Base station products from Aperto Networks, Redline Communications, and Sequans Communications, as well as Wavesat customer premise equipment (CPE), have been certified as compliant with the 802.16-2004 standard and interoperable with one another.
802.16-2004 WiMAX standards specify a form of "fixed" wireless broadband communication from a stationary subscriber location to a carrier's base station on a cell tower. The network's theoretical maximum throughput is about 70Mbps, shared by multiple service customers in increments divvied up by the service provider.
Product certification is a positive development for carriers seeking interoperable equipment choices, such as those who might wish to offer different vendors' CPE to different classes of commercial customers. But don't hold your breath for a flood of standards-based services. Most of the broadband wireless services in trial and commercial deployment use "pre-WiMAX" equipment that was built before the 802.16-2004 standard was ratified.
Aperto customer TowerStream, for example, has been using older Aperto gear to deploy commercial service and intends to begin trialing the certified Aperto base station and other vendors' certified equipment "as soon as possible," says Jeff Thompson, CEO. TowerStream offers fixed broadband wireless services in the U.S.'s top five cellular markets.
Meantime, AT&T conducted pre-WiMAX trials in Alaska and New Jersey throughout the second half of 2005, during which it determined that WiMAX is capable of performing on a par with T-1 technology. The gear didn't support WiMAX capabilities for encryption and QoS, so workaround approaches were used.
Meanwhile, AT&T has recently launched trials with 15 customers in Atlanta using equipment built to the 802.16-2004 standard, but not yet certified, including non-line of sight (NLOS) products. AT&T says it expects that licensed spectrum will be required for WiMAX services with service-level agreements.
"We plan to keep our options open, though, as our testing has shown that there could be potential in using a combination of unlicensed and licensed spectrum," said a company spokesperson.
AT&T has not detailed how it intends to procure licensed spectrum for commercial services. The FCC is poised to auction off 700 MHz spectrum as early as fall 2006, though early WiMAX-standard products operate in the 2.5 GHz band in the U.S., 3.5 GHz band internationally and in the 5.8 GHz unlicensed band.

The GTIB unit plans, establishes and operates cellular communication networks. It would take advantage o the contacts its sister company Leadcom has in Africa to deploy the networks.
Together with partners, GTIB is contending for several WiMax contracts in Africa. Its partners would supply a wide array of comm. Services.
At present cellular services in Africa target mainly the wealthy. GTIB?s vision is to reach the masses with lower cost tariffs.
At present GTIB operates in Azerbaijan through Bakcell, which provides GSM-based cellular services. Bakcell, the first cellular operator in Azerbaijan, has recruited 600,000 users and has achieved ARPU, or average revenue per user, of $11. Founded in 1994, Bakcell has invested more than $100 million to date in network construction.
Later competition rose in Azerbaijan, in the form of Azercel, which is a joint venture between Azertelecom and the Turkish company Turkcell. Azercel serves two million users and has invested more than $400 million in infrastructure.
A month ago the Azeri authorities licensed two more companies to operate in the realm: Azerfon, which is committing $300 million to GSM network development, and Catel.
GTIB was formed as a joint venture between Elgadcom and the Azerbaijan government. It was privatized in December 2003 and has been operating as a private company from the start of 2004. It covers about 80% of Azerbaijan?s area and most of its subscribers prepay for service.
