NEW YORK (Reuters) - Forgetting computer passwords is an everyday source of frustration, but a solution may literally be at hand -- in the form of computer chip implants.
a lot of good company mention in this atricle.

In addition to Intel, Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) will also feature its developing foothold in the digital home sector through its Linksys subsidiary, without mentioning its acquisition of digital set-top boxes company Scientific Atlanta (NYSE: SFA). As he does every year in Las Vegas, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) chairman Bill Gates will launch new products by his company and its partners.
Among Israeli companies, I expect news from Marvell Technology Group (Nasdaq: MRVL), SanDisk Corp. (Nasdaq: SNDK), M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers (Nasdaq: FLSH), Zoran Microelectronics (Nasdaq: ZRAN), DSP Group (Nasdaq: DSPG), and Metalink (Nasdaq: MTLK;TASE: MTLK).
Check Point and Syneron: Profit warnings?
Together with good news from this important exhibition, some bad news is also liable to emerge from this short trading week -- profit warnings for the fourth quarter. Last week, this threat was removed from Radware (Nasdaq: RDWR; TASE: RDWR) and Orckit Communications (Nasdaq: ORCT; TASE: ORCT), which released publication dates for their reports. I’m also confident that no profit warnings will come from M-Systems or SanDisk, since business is booming in the flash chip industry.
Viva Las Vegas
What surprises are in store at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show, what I expect to learn from Israeli companies’ upcoming financial reports, and a few final comments about 2005.
Shlomi Cohen 3 Jan 06 13:14
Gadgets will be trumps for the rest of the Wall Street trading week. The 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest exhibition in the sector, opens on Thursday in Las Vegas. All the major consumer electronics players will be there. From tomorrow through Friday, a lot of companies, small and large, are expected to issue announcements about new products.
Among the giant companies, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) will announce its strategic entry into the electronic components field, accompanied by the launch of new products, with an emphasis on the digital home. New Intel CEO Paul Otellini is leading the change. A year ago, he recruited senior VP and chief marketing officer Eric Kim, a manager of South Korean origin, for the task. Kim engineered a similar revolution at another giant, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., with great success. Samsung is making hay in two areas in which Intel also wants to succeed, although only as a supplier of components, electronics products, and chips.
It was no easy matter for Otellini to push through the change in Intel’s strategy. He had to convince his predecessors, quasi-legendary figures at Intel like chairman and former CEO Craig Barret and former chairman Andy Grove, that it was necessary. He also demanded that they give up the historic Intel Inside logo that accompanied their personal success as Intel managers. For Otellini, this logo symbolizes Intel’s imprisonment in the computer industry.
It’s now clear to everybody that the computer is no longer as dominant as it once was; it must contend with other surfing and communications devices, such as smart cellular telephones, digital televisions (just around the corner), and even all sorts of mobile entertainment platforms for listening to music, watching videos, and playing video games. The option of high-speed Internet surfing is either already available to everyone, or will be so soon.
In a departure from its usually practice, Orckit will publish its report very late -- in the last week of February, instead of in January, as it did last year. It seems to me that, before publishing new guidelines for 2006, Orckit’s managers want to brush up on the plans of their largest customer, KDDI Corporation (TSE: 9433), which will publish its results for the December quarter, the third in KDDI’s fiscal year, and may also update its deployment plans for the current year at the same time.
I sense a large probability that Syneron Medical Ltd. (Nasdaq: ELOS) will issue a profit warning. Friday’s 11% plunge in the share was due to a downgraded recommendation from CIBC, which fears that the company will miss its sales target. In a "Globes" interview on Sunday, acting Syneron Medical chairman Dr. Shimon Eckhouse declined to comment on the quarter, claiming that the figures had not yet been collected. This claim seems odd to me in the computer era, and constitutes at least an indication that the quarter is borderline, with the company scrambling to get its distributors to up their sales figures. In addition, a sentence like, “I’m here to build value for investors in the long term,” usually hints at a problem in the short term.
Synernon’s share began its slide from a peak of $46 on December 13, accompanied by a large trading volume. At the time, the fall in the share was attributed to a downgraded recommendation by CNBC guru James Cramer, who told investors to take some of their large profits in the share off the table, because, as he puts it: "Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs get slaughtered." The share indeed shed 32% of its peak value, but I suspect that, even then, the fall was due to problems with the company’s quarterly results, not just what Cramer said.
Cramer also recommended switching to the share of a competitor just after its IPO, and similar recommendations of his for other shares did not cause such a sharp response. After all, he didn’t say anything bad about Syneron for either the short or long term; he only repeated his investment philosophy, which advocates taking some of the profits gained from a rising share.
A second candidate of mine for a profit warning is Check Point (Nasdaq: CHKP), because CEO Gil Shwed himself said a month ago that management wouldn’t know whether it would meet its guidelines until the final day of the quarter. Yesterday morning, Shwed, whom I believe has many more distributors than Eckhouse, already knew the answer. We investors will know today or tomorrow, because the company will either publish an official profit warning, or it will release the publication date for its report, which is considered a reliable sign to investors that the company has at least met its own guidance range.
Finally, I have added Eltek (Nasdaq: ELTK) to my investment portfolio.

Intel Announces Chip Technology Breakthrough Using New Materials; New Material Could Help Chips Run Cooler, Use Less Energy
12/7/2005 11:00:02 AM
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec 07, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation today announced development of a new, ultra-fast, yet very low power prototype transistor using new materials that could form the basis of its microprocessors and other logic products beginning in the second half of the next decade.
Intel and QinetiQ researchers have jointly demonstrated an enhancement-mode transistor using indium antimonide (chemical symbol: InSb) to conduct electrical current. Transistors control the flow of information/electrical current inside a chip. The prototype transistor is much faster and consumes less power than previously announced transistors. Intel anticipates using this new material to complement silicon, further extending Moore's Law.
Significant power reduction at the transistor level, accompanied by a substantial performance increase, could play a crucial role in delivering future platforms to computer users by allowing an increased number of features and capabilities. Considerably less energy used and heat generated could add significant battery life for mobile devices and increase opportunities for building smaller more powerful products.
"The results of this research reinforce our confidence in being able to continue to follow Moore's Law beyond 2015. As was the case with other Intel technical advancements, we expect these new materials will enhance the future of silicon-based semiconductors," said Ken David, director of components research for Intel's Technology and Manufacturing Group. "By providing 50 percent more performance while reducing power consumption by roughly 10 times, this new material will give us considerable flexibility because we will have ability to optimize for both performance and power of future platforms."
InSb is in a class of materials called III-V compound semiconductors which are in use today for a variety of discrete and small scale integrated devices such as radio-frequency amplifiers, microwave devices and semiconductor lasers.
Researchers from Intel and QinetiQ have previously announced transistors with InSb channels. The prototype transistors being announced today, with a gate length of 85nm, are the smallest ever, at less than half the size of those disclosed earlier. This is the first time that enhancement mode transistors have been demonstrated. Enhancement mode transistors are the predominant type of transistor used in microprocessors and other logic. These transistors are able to operate at a reduced voltage, about 0.5 volts -- roughly half of that for transistors in today's chips -- which leads to chips with far less power consumption.
"This research is a great example of how QinetiQ, working with other world-leading companies such as Intel, is targeting its research in technologies with commercial potential," said Tim Phillips, business manager of the Fast Transistors group at QinetiQ.
Details will be provided at the IEDM conference Dec. 5-7, in Washington, D.C., where the formal paper describing this advancement will be delivered. The paper is titled, "85nm Gate Length Enhancement and Depletion mode InSb Quantum Well Transistors for Ultra High Speed and Very Low Power Digital Logic Applications."

Siemens, The Mount Sinai Medical Center and Elmhurst Hospital Center Form Patient Health Smart Card Alliance with Goal of Serving Residents and Health Care Facilities in New York Metro Area
Monday December 5, 8:00 am ET
Alliance to Create Patient Smart Card Deployment among the Largest in the Nation
BOCA RATON, Fla. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2005--A huge segment of the population in the New York City metropolitan area could soon benefit from a patient smart card technology program that will help make important health care information more accurate, more secure and more readily available. The new program is part of a strategic alliance announced today by Siemens Communications Inc., The Mount Sinai Medical Center and Elmhurst Hospital Center.
The Patient Health Smart Card initiative builds off the successful smart card pilot launched at Elmhurst Hospital in 2003, the first of its kind in New York City. Siemens brings a long history of successful patient smart card deployments to bear, including large-scale projects such as the Lombardy, Italy, regional patient card project. Together, Mount Sinai, Elmhurst and Siemens hope to expand smart card technology throughout the metropolitan area and create a regional health network for the benefit of their patients.
Rollout of the Patient Health Smart Card will occur in phases, with initial deployments of 100,000 smart cards to include Mount Sinai Medical Center and eight affiliated hospitals. The affiliated hospitals are: The Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens, Cabrini Medical Center, Elmhurst Hospital, Englewood Hospital, North General Hospital, Queens Hospital, St. John's Riverside Hospital, and Settlement Health. Overall, there are 45 affiliated and related health care facilities in the New York Metro area to be linked by the smart card initiative.
These institutions will issue their patients photo identification cards with embedded chips (smart cards) that can store patient information and will be routinely updated by health care professionals who are part of the regional smart card network. The Patient Health Smart Cards can be loaded with vital patient information such as demographics, allergies, current medications, laboratory results and more. The smart card is owned by the patient.
"This program has the potential to become one of the largest deployments of patient smart card technology in the United States," said Joe Licata, president of the Enterprise Division of Siemens Communications Inc. "With this innovative application of smart card technology, New York City patients can benefit from having direct control of key medical data on a highly portable, secure platform. This is essential in a metropolitan environment where people are always on the go and where a high density of health care facility options exist."
Siemens will provide technical and organizational services for the introduction of the Healthcare Patient Data Card. Siemens will deploy card management systems and software to help health care providers maintain and update patient data throughout the card's lifecycle. Smart card technologies are part of the Siemens® HiPath® SIcurity® family of solutions that help enterprises protect information and communication via strong authentication, secure networks and identity management solutions.
The multi-year agreement between Siemens, Mount Sinai and Elmhurst also includes ongoing development of smart card technologies and integration with clinical and other information systems related to patient care.
"With Siemens, we are working with one of the world's best technology leaders to help improve patient care and provide hospitals with more readily accessible information in a secure and portable format," said Kenneth L. Davis, MD., President and Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Dean of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Whether it's an emergency or routine visit, patient data is vital to ensuring the appropriate treatment in a timely fashion."
The chip-embedded smart cards - about the size of a credit card - provide access to medical information and help to reduce medical errors caused by misinformation or lack of patient data. When admitted, a patient would insert the card into a reader and enter their private Personal Identification Number (PIN) to unlock the card, giving the health care facility access to the information on the card such as patient demographics, chronic diseases, allergies, current medications, lab results, medical histories and other important patient information. Other smart card technology benefits include helping to decrease patient wait times and sharing of vital patient information between providers.
"With rising health care costs, these hospitals and Siemens are working together to deploy a Patient Health Smart Card that can fundamentally change health care delivery with more secure and cost-effective transfers of patient records," noted Alan D. Aviles, President, New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation (the parent corporation of two participating affiliates - Elmhurst and Queens Hospital Centers). "This first step is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of removing waste, duplication and errors in the health care equation."

Intel plans to invest $1bn in India
By Anita Jain in New Delhi
Last Update:12:25 PM ET Dec. 5, 2005
Intel, the world's largest maker of semiconductors, said it would invest more than $1bn in India during the next five years in areas such as venture capital, though it stopped short of announcing firm plans to set up a manufacturing plant.
Craig Barrett, chairman, on Monday said the US chip-maker would set up the $250m Intel Capital India Technology Fund – the country's largest venture capital fund – to invest in software and hardware start-ups.
Another $800m would be used to expand Intel's existing research and development centre in Bangalore, which employs some 2,800, as well as to support some of the company's education and community programmes in India. The planned investment more than doubles the $700m Intel has put into the country during the past 10 years.
Intel, however, disappointed industry watchers who had anticipated it would announce plans for a manufacturing facility, particularly since its rival Advanced Micro Devices last week said it would license its technology to a group setting up India's first fabrication plant.
Mr Barrett said Intel was discussing with the Indian government the sites of manufacturing operations in the country but added: "We're not ready to announce anything at this time."
However, he said Intel would not follow the strategy adopted by AMD, which will outsource its microprocessing and logic manufacturing technology to SemIndia, a consortium of non-resident Indians that plans to begin construction on the $3bn fab next year.
"The technology we use is not available to third-party establishments and we do not make it available," Mr Barrett said.
Intel commands more than 80 per cent of the global chip-making industry, while AMD has about 13 per cent.
Domestic demand in India is growing rapidly and is estimated at an annual $160bn by 2016, according to SemIndia.
The chipmaker, which has already put $100m into some 40 start-ups since 1998, said it would invest $2m-$5m in new Indian companies involved in areas such as cellular and wireless technology and broadband applications.
Intel is focusing more on emerging markets to maintain its double-digit annual growth in percentage terms. In January, it reorganised the company and created a Channel Products division to meet the needs of local markets worldwide.
P Chidambaram, India's finance minister, said of the planned fund: "This new capital will give a head-start to the many new enterprises engaged in the frontline of research. With Intel's backing, no doubt many of these companies will turn out to be huge successes."

FORT LEE, N.J., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On Track Innovations Ltd., (OTI) (Nasdaq: OTIV; Prime Standard [Frankfurt]: OT5), a global leader in contactless microprocessor-based smart card solutions for homeland security, payments and other applications, said that the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C. found in favor of OTI America, Inc. ("OTI"), in OTI's protest against the Government Printing Office's ("GPO") elimination of OTI from the competition for the United States Government's Electronic Passport program. The Court's written opinion remains under seal, pending the preparation of a redacted version.
OTI, along with several other firms, received an individual contract with the GPO, under which the GPO was testing and evaluating sample Electronic Passports, prior to selecting the winner. During testing the GPO terminated OTI's contract, effectively eliminating OTI from the ongoing competition

There were 7.5 million Israeli journeys abroad in 2004,
considering there were a population of 6.8 million, it
means on average every Israeli traveled more than once

Of course averages are misleading as some have not traveled

Duke and Duchess Shoppes Launch BioPay; First Convenience Stores in Ohio to Speed Checkouts with Finger-based Transactions
12/1/2005 10:01:01 AM
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec 01, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ohio residents can now conveniently and securely pay for goods with just their finger at Duke and Duchess Shoppe locations near Columbus, Ohio, using technology from biometric payments leader BioPay, LLC. The service is the first of its kind in a convenience store in Ohio. Duke and Duchess Shoppes, a chain of 100 stores across Ohio and West Virginia, will implement BioPay's payment system with an initial launch of 10 of its convenience stores to give their customers faster checkouts and greater convenience when making a purchase. BioPay's payment service, a processing solution that allows customers to make purchases with a simple, secure placement of the finger, offers merchants a low-cost form of payment, while reducing incidents of fraud.
"We are providing our customers with the most secure payment method available and at the same time speeding up the checkout process for them," says Jason Collins, Information Technology Manager at Englefield Oil, owner of Duke and Duchess Shoppes. "With BioPay payments, consumer convenience is up and retailer costs are down. BioPay costs us 70% less than process credit or debit card transaction, and we can pass that savings along to the consumer."
Duke and Duchess Shoppes will be offering a free cup of coffee or soft drink at enrollment and receive a buy one get one free coupon after the consumer's first BioPay purchase.
The BioPay system uses a person's unique finger image and their chosen BioPay number (usually a phone number) to authorize a secured debit direct from their checking account. BioPay combines biometrics and ACH debit to deliver the lowest cost form of payment in which transactions are reduced up to 75 percent. When customers use their check card to pay, more than 50 percent of the retailer profits disappear.
The one-time enrollment can be completed at any merchant that offers the biometric payment service and the entire process takes less than two minutes. Once enrolled, the customer can purchase in seconds with their finger at any BioPay payment location across the United States. The BioPay service is free to the consumer.
"Our goal is to provide the convenience of a secure, wallet-less world where consumers feel secure that none of their personal information is being 'left behind' at the time of transaction," says Tim Robinson, president of BioPay. "We also believe that retailers pay too much in credit and debit card fees and BioPay solves that problem. With low flat fee per transaction pricing, BioPay is dramatically less expensive than Visa's typical two percent fee to merchants."
BioPay is installed coast to coast, serving a broad range of merchants from owner-operated single locations to larger chains most frequented by today's busy consumers including grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, beverage stores and other lifestyle retailers.
About BioPay
With more than two million registered consumers, BioPay's customer adoption proves that the time for biometrics is now. BioPay is a Biometric Transaction Company, processing today more than 17 million transactions in excess of $7 billion. More than 1,500 merchants are using one or more of BioPay's smart, secure methods for processing financial and other transactions requiring identification such as payroll check cashing, loyalty programs, age verification and stored value programs. BioPay's payment service offers merchants a low-cost form of payment, while reducing fraud incidents and gives consumers a convenient, secure and quick way to pay for purchases. BioPay's Paycheck Secure system is a complete payroll check cashing solution designed to stop fraud and speed check cashing transactions. Herndon, Virginia-based BioPay is the only pure biometric transaction processing company today with its own patent-pending systems for grocers, convenience stores, gas stations, beverage stores and other lifestyle retailers.
