For you maybe. I was working in the coal mines by then, after they ran out of canaries.
That’s a good age! Playing, coloring, and after school snacks? Sounds like a good life to me!
In my head I'm only 6 1/2.
I don’t think I realized he was 74. In my head, he was only in his 50s.
It's typically tough to pick a side. Good for those who can view something from both perspectives.
I do watch the show but I haven’t watched the latest episode yet.
I think it’s well done and you are right, it does make you think.
but what about Meatloaf?
The spousal_unit knew him personally.
Oh, man! I hadn’t even heard about him passing. That is sad.
Did anyone here watch the TV show Accused yesterday? Every week they show a very difficult legal dilemma.
Last night (maybe it was the night before), it was about a "truther" and a Sandy Hook type situation.
The spousal_unit could not believe people can be so easily influenced to false "facts". I tried explaining to her what it's like on IHUB every day. Penny stock holders who, no matter how much factual information you provide them, will always try to deny it, and typically, when this doesn't work they attack the messenger.
It's actually very sad, and coming from a legal studies background I know that when you voir dire a jury, you look for the jurors who once convinced of something, will not change their mind no matter what. Sadly, it's pretty common to find these people.
So funny how the spousal was shocked by the story line, and I accepted it as just another Tuesday.
If you haven't been watching the show I'd urge you to start from the beginning. Most episodes make you think.
Yes. I meant William Hurt.
Meatloaf, yes. John Hurt passed in 2017.
I guess. If it includes donkeys eating fingers
Irish sense of humors can be very dark.
I don't recall laughing. It seemed really depressing to me.
Philip Baker Hall was one of my faves. Look him up, you'll know him if you watched Seinfeld.
Meatloaf was in Rocky Horror Picture Show, Fight Club and a couple other movies.
There were others skipped like Gina Lollobrigida and others
It WAS a dark comedy.
Did you ever hear the phrase cut off your nose to spite your face?
This time it was fingers.

Well, from what I recall, they also missed Phillip Baker Hall and Sorvino, Bogdanovich, Meatloaf, John Hurt
Bogdonavich died in January 2022 so they probably did him last year. John Hurt died in 2017 so I think you meant William Hurt. He died last March before the Oscars so he probably was remembered then.
I am surprised about Sorvino. As for the other two, one I never heard of (Hall) and is the other an actor? (Meatloaf)

and your Irish movie was considered a "dark comedy".

I agree with you on The Fabelmans and I thought for sure Judd Hirsch would get it, if for no other reason, his age.
Hollywood likes to hype movies that are off the beaten path
I agree with that why, IMO, EEAAO won.
Did you know that was considered SciFi?
Saget and Poitier they did last year.
They did miss Heche and Jordan.
As for Blake I guess I missed the joke.
The social statement is....."We must recognize all the foreign movies who have not gotten their due over the years. Giving awards to minorities in America is much more important than giving to those more deserving.
The Fabelmans got zero awards, and at least in my mind (and I've been pretty good at recognizing good movies in the past), this was by far the best movie in some years.
I agree with this reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes....
Whoa!! Where did I say anything about Kimmel and Trump?? I just thought Kimmel wasn't at all funny.
I have no problem recognizing the lives of the "little people" in cinema, but look at the list for yourself...
https://www.google.com/search?q=actors+who+died+in+2022&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS992US992&oq=actors+who+died+&aqs=chrome.0.0i433i512j0i131i433i512j69i57j0i131i433i512j0i433i512j0i512l2j0i433i512j0i512l2.7804j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Kimmel did mention Robert Blake not being worthy. Who is he to judge after a guy dies? At least respect them in death.
Maybe few actors died? Who did they forget?
There is more to movie making than actors. Unfortunately many who are involved in movie making get little credit.
The least we can do is remember them when they die.
As for Jimmy Kimmel, people dislike him now because he “owns” Trump.
You are making this political, not me.
They have traded art for social statements.
Since Everything Everywhere All at Once won the majority of awards I don’t understand why you think it was a social statement?
I agree that whoever votes isn’t voting for the best, but I don’t get the “social statement” implications.
The mother in EEAAO just seemed to be going through a midlife crisis.
The Oscars last night, as always, did the In Memoriam where they named the people who died this past year. However, they showed very few actors, but instead showed people who worked behind the scenes plus a few actors we know.
So many people deserving of mention. Guess they needed more time for Jimmy Kimmel to do his jokes that fell flat.
I don't think Hollywood deserves my money any longer. They have traded art for social statements.
I just realized I had seen Triangle of Sadness a while back. So mediocre I didn't know I had seen it?
A bunch of people puking on a ship isn't my cup of tea I guess.
I just finished watching Tar. I say "I' because the spousal_unit fell asleep a half hour into it.
I was intrigued at the beginning, as I've never considered how much goes into the process of conducting but then it just turned into the female version of the Harvey Weinstein story.
How is this an Oscar worthy movie? Cate Blanchett did her usual credible job, but I didn't really care.
I consider surviving 'til the end worthy of an award.
My Oscar predictions based on what I have seen.
Best Actor
Austin Butler
Brendan Frazier will probably win but I haven’t seen The Whale yet.
Best Supporting Actor
Judd Hirsch
Best Actress
Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actress
Jamie Lee Curtis
Best Picture
The Fabelmans
I watched Babylon and I really liked it.
A bit bizarre but I bet it’s kinda real.
4.0/5.0
A bit too long.
I await with bated breath your review. It is a "special" sort of movie to say the least.
I haven’t seen Babylon yet but it’s on my list. Good cast.
That is true. Artistic ones do.
I really think Fabelmans should win.....although I haven't seen all the movies, it has been a while since I've been so entertained by one.
Oscars just don't seem the same though when you're watching the movies at home.
BTW, have you seen Babylon? I'd love to know if you'd find it entertaining
Entertaining movies don’t win awards it seems.
Made you cry??
I guess if you don't remember the first movie, you're not going to remember the similarities.
Are you sure you just weren't enamored with Tom Cruises 60+ year old body?
Are you entertained when a movie is depressing?
We watched Nomadland a couple of weeks ago. I remember it won a lot of awards last year. We thought it was boring and a waste of time. I have to wonder what is considered a good movie any more? I heard The Whale was totally depressing and hard to watch. And Everything, Everywhere All at once is definitely not deserving of anything, anywhere at any time ever.
A few years ago it was Parasite. In fact, I just went back and looked at some of the winners of awards over the last few years, it's pretty apparent how they are voting, and the reverse bias they are trying to recognize.
I didn’t notice any of those things. I watch a movie to be entertained and entertain only this movie made me cry, which is always a plus.
But...but..but....you didn't like Princess Bride?
I just like my movies to make sense. They can be silly, if they are meant to be silly.
The Jennifer Connelly character was just an offhand comment by Goose in one scene. They decided that because Kelly McGillis didn't age well, they weren't going to use her again. You should be offended or something.
The fact that they had Goose's kid wearing the same glasses and shirt as his father who died some 20 years earlier was also silly. They were counting on people to like the nostalgia.
Even throwing Val Kilmer in there seemed forced.
That's where you and I are different.
1) I don't remember the original Top Gun at all so I wouldn't know if it was exactly the same.
2) I just like to be entertained. Your "silly" is my "entertaining".
I may be one of the few who didn't like Maverick. It was almost exactly Top Gun done over again!!
It was way too hokey for me. I mean they had a mission that no one had ever been able to do before, and they needed to do it twice?? Silly.
Then the beach scene was fine in the 80's, but now it just played as dumb.
Yes, Tom Cruise for 60 years old is in better shape than any of my golfing buddies.
The only nominated film that I have not seen was Avatar, The Way of Water. It doesn’t seem to be available to rent on demand.
Here is my list from best to worst.
1) The Fabelmans
2) Top Gun, Maverick
3) The Banshees of Inisherin
4) All Quite on the Western Front
5) Elvis
6) Triangle of Sadness
7) Tar
8) Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
9) Women Talking
I never gave my rating for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
I thought it was too weird for my taste.
1.95/5.0
Elvis
I watched this awhile back and although I enjoyed it I didn’t expect to like it since I was not really an Elvis fan.
I remember thinking it started out slow but got better.
The actor who played Elvis was very good
3.85/5.0
Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise still has it! I really enjoyed this movie and I didn’t expect to.
4.5/5
“Is this a line from the movie, or your current thought process?”
It wasn’t a line from the movie, but it WAS the movie.
The soldiers were literally young kids, and the bigwigs were in their big houses, drinking wine and smoking cigars.
The movie was about World War I, so it makes sense that that’s what I was talking about

A board to review, talk about, recommend your favorite movies, tv shows - reality and otherwise, actors, music, books, food, anything you feel like chatting about.
We like to use the pickle system around here, but feel free to rate as you see fit.
If you like the system, it goes as such
0 - 1....you would probably want to recommend to derf
1.01 - 2....better wait for HBO
2.01 - 3....worth a rental, maybe even a trip to the picture show
3.01 - 3.99....pretty much a must see, either in the theater or DVD.
4....WOW
