I am going through his profile and posting this announcement on the boards he chose to visit.
A great Ihubber, Goldman450, passed on last evening and his wife, Robin, posted to Centual Sue and myself about his passing.
This is her post to Sue:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hi sue, I did try to write to you last night but honestly, I am numb.
Please ask Phil and yourself to pick in Rob's name. Nascar was everything to him.
He'd not want to miss his picks!

Hello,
This is Rob's wife Robin. I am very sorry to tell you this but Rob passed on this afternoon. He passed away in his easy chair just as he wanted.
I had just gotten done holding him to tell him I loved him when he passed. It was very sudden, but he just went during his sleep and was very calm.
I'm so sorry. He spoke highly of all of you. I tried my very best for him, but he just went.
Robin
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The moderators on the NASCAR board, and Sue, will pick for him next year, and if history tells us anything, he will win the contest next year just like Marie did the year she died.
Must be divine intervention, whatever.
We are going to have a Memorial service for Rob (Goldman) tomorrow evening on the NASCAR board, and request that anyone that cares, please stop by and say goodbye to him.

Also, we are requesting that anyone that knew him or traded posts with him please, please send a PM to his account so his wife can read the posts at her leisure and see how much we cared about him.

TV & FILM Producer who raises private investor capital to fund Indie Film and TV Packaging, seeks a handful of Investors who are in a position to invest $25K-$250K on some note worthy projects. I have important Hollywood contacts, connections to A-List Performers and contacts within the major Hollywood Studios. I have a great documentary project that only requires 1 or a few Investors to fund the production and the investment is for, $100K. Distrubution is already in place, a major film festival has agreed to show it just on the strength of the P.R. and Media Buzz it is creating and two major Rock Talents (one a Grammy Winner of recent years and a band that is world famous) have agreed to score the film. Upon R.O.I., profit points from rentals/sales of DVDs could be quite lucrative.
I am already speaking to a few hedge fund types but if you move quick and want in, I can send you the press releases, bios and business prospectus. Please only reply if you want to fund a dynamic, documentary(shooting commences in April) that will more than likely get PBS Airing, plenty of media attention, theatre runs and positive sales not to mention, Executive Producer credits on the film if you are the one selected to fund this project.

One users experience that has come to know this site.
I came here after the board we use to post on got inundated with garbage. I was signed up by one of the admins of the NVEI board, and then told how to get there. My first visit I found to be a little aggrivating to find my board.
Oh boy, lets learn some new software! Now yall asked for this and I hope you don't just write my experience off as, "well this guy doesn't understand how we got this thing," cause I'm joe consumer, I know just enought html to do my own personal page from scratch, I've used the internet for about 6 years and I would consider myself just a notch above average when it comes to figuring things out.
I don't mean that in a personal sense but as feedback from my experience on the site. I was almost dragged here. I use to participate in chat rooms when I used AOL years ago. I went through stages. First it was only the chat rooms. Man that was neat. Chat rooms can be brutal for slow typers and new people. They'll pass you by in a heartbeat.
Then after about a year or two, I got more into exploring the web. Chat was old hat and they most of the time run their course as someone will say something that may offend another or say something not knowing they offended anyone, or they would do nothing but offend everyone.
It got to a point where chat was a waste of time and you had to remain popular and type a mile a minute to even get popular. No quick witt? Couldn't get it out in time? Or someone beat you to it. After a few years of that I got interested in how did they do that web page and took a class in html. Now I'm dangerous.
I play with code and build a few pages, at a slower rate than most because I could and I am. Then I got interested in the market. No more chat rooms, message boards was the way to go. Raging Bull and Etrade........I'm gonna get rich. Ha...he.... ha.
I started posting eventually after being a lurker for about 6 months. Too shy, didn't want to say the wrong thing, didn't want to hurt any feeling and sure as hell didn't want mine hurt. Then that fateful day came when someone said that certain
some thing that caused me to register and make a comment. Boy was I proud of myself.
After a few weeks getting to know the people and they me, I had a new way to go. I was gonna be the most pleasant person on the net to take up a keyboard. And hey, I could strut my personal page that was now 2 years old (and now 5 years old. I take that
back. I just cancelled my proxy AOL connection in late Jan and now they're gone.)
Like I was saying, what the hell was I saying..oh yeah, Raging Bull, favorite stock, talk and learn. A year and a half almost two and now its time for another change. "Come to this board and post here and join us in chat," they said. Ok Ok OK. I'm hating this rb now for sure after the format change.
So I get here and fumble around to find NVEI chat. Pretty cool once I got there. Brings back memories from the ole AOL days....hummm is this gonna last. At first it was straight to chat, no post and out. Back to chat, no post and out. After about two or three months, I tired of chat and the personality it took on.
When something didn't go right with the stock, a few of the people you thought you knew pretty good go to whining. UT OH. Memories...... I've seen this movie. I boldly call someone an asshole and don't go to chat for a month. Back to rb, for the most part cause there wasn't much posting to read.
Everyone was in chat and the need for post just wasn't there. Mostly because there was nothing to post (this is important to the survey team). If our company had put out any info, I'm sure there would have been three to four times the post. Consisting of the information that was put out and then the pros and cons.
But absolutely nothing came from the company so here we were. Two months three months four months. All there was was chat to stay in touch daily with everyone. I personally started posting a little as I was totally disgusted with raging cess pool by now.
The no news climate over there was viral. Nothing but daytraders caught with their pants down crying for mama. And the language....shit! It was just terrible thats all I can say.
Early January I start posting even more here. I start exploring the site. Heck....look at all these boards and topics. And some not being used. Some having one post.
Found the bar and liked it ok. Found it to be a little exclusive and not enough people that wanted to get to know one another. As a matter of fact, a few drink recipes were posted and was recieved by a few tee totalers as a bad lifestyle. Some bar. Now thats out. For the most part.
So then I started searching the site again and found the Home improvement board. So far that is the most favorable board other than my stock board that I've found that its evident that people really mind how they post. Ideas are presented and recieved well and so far not one asshole. And each new person gets a welcome greeting.
I found the law enforcement board and find that really interesting and have yet to come up to speed on that one. Looking forward to it though. I need to back up to mention the jailhouse which I like and think is neat.
The test board for practicing a few things. The computer learning I've visited and liked. And now most recently Excel's coffee shop. Thats gonna be a hit. I think we could close down the other bar if he was to rename it Excel's coffee shop, bar & grill, and barber shop.
I've wanted to see a board that talks about movies. I'd also like to see something like a flea market (even post small picture of the item for sell. Members take it upon themselves to wheel and deal and buyer beware as to keep management out of it, problem wise.
Chat. In my opinion, chat will not last or take up much space in comparrison to other boards that are to come if you continue opening these boards to other ideas. Chat imo would be novel for a little while, but will fall second to the boards eventually as each member runs through his or her metamorphose chat phase.
Wheather or not the chat is affordable to get to the greater end is something that might take longer to find out than is affordable. I think it will wind up being about a quarter of
the total package draw when things eventually balance out.
Will chat be the draw to increase the number of boards eventually? Myself, its nice to have chat to go to on rainy days like going to shoot pool during the day when its raining
outside and your suppose to be at work.
I think the home page needs to be redone fast. Considering everything you feature reachable from the home page and tree out. Weed out the dead wood boards. Then add a small personal ibox for after a member joins to put his favorite boards and rooms links on.
A list of say 10 or 15 clickable links that are his/hers exclusively as they learn the different areas. I'm only talking 5% or less of the home page.
Turn on the computer, go to ihub, my links are right there in the corner and here we go, stop by the coffee shop/bar/barber shop, pull up my favorite stock board, check for any increased
action.....look to see who's in chat.
Maybe drop in if someone is there I want to talk to. Maybe not...Maybe I'll just pm em instead. Read my board, state my opinion, split screen with etrade, the message board, email and chat. Count the money, or learn how to be a tax expert in capital losses. What was the question again?
dinkydow
Feedback to my feedback is not necessary from other members. Ideas just tossed out there. If I was of any help, I'm glad. If not....you asked? LOL
One more last thing for now. Our own personal exclusive charactercure that we may present for approval.
Bob Hi
Let me say that as boards with information, your combination of disscussion and live chat is one of the best on the web. With stock newsgroups becoming a soap box for some plotical forum. One can find timely information in these discussion groups. I like them so that there is not much that needs to be don for them. Except maybe if you can offer a download option.
Now for the subject that you may be able to addres. Is there any way you can expand the discussion group to include a general area to chat. If you don't own MPTT or EDIG then basicaly you are out of the club. If those two have a bad week (as it was last week) your log on's fall off drasticly.
One last thing. I know that your site is basicaly fee based with no hassel (this sometimes means free). If you send us freeloaders a reminder in our e_mail post, you might find your revenue goes up some.
I would like CHAT room to save settings, like character icon so you dont need to reset each time.
I like chat here and only limit my visits because I've been working and the business lines get charged by the minute. I would like to be able to see who is in the chat room before I sign on. It's rude to pop in and see there isn't anyone you want to talk to and leave.
Ernie
Hey Bob,
I personally, enjoy the community that we've become here. Coming from SI and then RB and now here, you and Matt have a good thing
here with the live chat room. As for the trading room, I've been in there when live chat was down, but "that" may be an expensive backup, i don't know. Well, off to work for now, I hope live chat is still around when I get back.....
Reguards Jim
Bob,
I could send you some source code (I wrote)that would basically generate the same or more ad revenue and still let u use live chat.
I just have to find it.
However I could give you the details in pm of how it works.
Bob. I'm sure you have some numbers.
But my stats for the largest group of users except for the day trading site which I can't see in chat is certainly backed up by our message board numbers.
Below is what I just posted on NVEI board to promote my new board and other boards here to urge even more participation.
Hi NVEI shareholders!

I've continued to watch the stats and they've continued to be nothing short of appalling. I'll discuss more in length after I get things set up so the people who use Chat know to come here and weigh in with their thoughts and ideas.
Bob. I want to expand a little on my last post.
Take the NVEI board for example.
We have more shareholders per hour using chat then any other message board.
It took 7 months to reach a thousand posts.
The next thousand posts took only 3 months.
As you can see as familarity builds and habits change so does Ihub!
It will happen. Just need some more time to let Ihub grow on people. This is the best message/chat featured board on the internet. The reaping of the harvest will be very evident soon!

Bob. You said.........It'd be tough to even make a case for it currently as a "loss leader". The idea behind a loss leader is that you lure people into the store by selling something so cheap that you lose money on it, but make the money back because they make other purchases while they're there.
Bob.
The people using chat that haven't posted I know you are concerned about.
But I believe you need to give it more time.
Yesterday was a perfect example. A person in chat asked about cleaning glass. I was able to direct him to the Home Improvement board.
When I did that others in chat were surprised ihub had a board like that. That was my opportunity to tell them about more interesting boards here and about how to get to them.
It takes time when you have people come here that are use to other message boards.
People are creatures of habit. Some people take a long time before they decide to take the time to discover what is here.
You will always have some people who will only use chat. It's not a perfect world. But on the other hand you give it some time for old habits to go away and new habits to include Ihub and you will see that it's only a matter of time.
I asked in chat if anyone knew or had used next ten feature. No one had. But they would now try it. Habit is everything.
I highly suggest sending out an email describing all the features at ihub and how they work.
Maybe put about ten interesting boards featured in it.
You'd be surprised how many people that use the sight don't know how all the features work.
Educate the users here more and I believe you see the use go up.

Actually, we'll need to make it next week. I've been logging chat activity (not what's said in chat -- just people going in and out of chat) and will compile and present the stats here next week, then insert a reminder into the LiveChat code telling people they need to visit this thread to share their thoughts on the value of Chat, how to make it more valuable, and how to make it worthwhile for the site to offer.
The stats I've seen so far are extremely discouraging.
I just checked, and since I started this tracking a few days ago, the LiveChat link has been hit 1704 times by 240 different people. Of those 240 different people, 140 of them have done nothing else on the site since their entrance into chat. No posting, no reading, no nothing. They go to the home page, log in, hit the LiveChat link, and we never see them again. It's just a free browser-based IRC to them.
The thought that was offered before about how Chat pays us back by bringing people to the site and them using the site as a result just isn't supported by the raw data.
When I present the final stats next week, and put the reminder in the Chat link, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and ask that people look at me as someone with their hand on the power cord for Chat, getting ready to yank it out of the wall, and ask for reasons I shouldn't or ideas to make it not seem necessary to yank the cord.
It'd be tough to even make a case for it currently as a "loss leader". The idea behind a loss leader is that you lure people into the store by selling something so cheap that you lose money on it, but make the money back because they make other purchases while they're there.
I like the idea of having chat because it's unique among message boards and is a big part of what BBSes were about; it's yet another way to foster a sense of "community", which is important to me.
What I don't like is that it's so expensive for us and could end up being quite a bit more expensive (software, new server, more money to the ISP monthly) and doesn't appear to contribute at all to offsetting its cost, even indirectly.
I have some ideas, but will wait and post them when the stats are compiled and the chat folks get their invites to join this discussion. I'll also temporarily move this board to the Free Zone so non-subscribers can participate.
We'll touch this topic this weekend, Bob.
I think my current plan will be expiring soon, so need to know how we want to structure it.
Starting to compile some interesting stats about Chat. It's early in the morning, so I doubt Chat is as populated now as it typically would be. But here's what I see right now.
There are currently 45 users in chat.
10 of those users have written at least one post in the past 7 days.
12 of the 35 people who haven't posted in the last 7 days have at least posted sometime.
The other 23 people have never posted.
39 people are grandfathered premium members and the other 6 are free members.
I'll refine this query so it can give me an instant snapshot anytime today and give me more data. Then I might have something useful to work with.
At this point it does, however, seem to support my hypothesis that chat cannibalizes posting. Roughly half the people currently in chat have never posted.
Toss the 15 minutes of chat time out the window per public post. That's way too complex. Keep it simple.
As I was saying before, whether or not something's complex is really more of a Bob issue. And it wouldn't be complex really. If someone has posted 100 messages, they're alloted a total of 1500 minutes of chat. Easy.
But, that said, it was an off-the-cuff idea. Not one I'm married to.
It is similar in regards to private messages. We don't realize profit off of those (only 2 people see them), but they are an incentive to join the site.
The similarity ends when you factor in cost. PM's cost us nothing but the code it took to implement them. Okay, that can be equated with the cost of outright buying the DC package and bringing it in-house. But the cost of PM's ends there. Not so with DC. I don't remember -- are we paying an ongoing amount right now to have it available? If I remember correctly, we won't if we bring it in-house. But then comes the cost in terms of processor power and the possibility that it can slow down the rest of the site.
I would suspect (hope/dread) that the reason it's unreliable is that it's overwhelming their servers. I hope it's not that the software itself is just unreliable. I'm not interesting in shaky software any more than I'm interested in such software overwhelming or crashing my servers. Or having to buy another server and pay for its connection because it doesn't play well with others and exposes our bread and butter services to outages. I kinda dig the fact that our only real outages have been the brief timeframes when I've rebooted machines for one reason or another.
I want to realize some profit off of the DigiChat, but I don't want to make it too complicated.
If it's complicated, that's my problem. I wouldn't make it complicated for the users. Personally, I dont' mind a little work in the interest of profits. <g>
I'd be interested in the data mining results before I comment on it further.
Me, too, although I'm still a ways away from being able to implement anything like that. Unlikely to get it done before the cost of lifetime subscriptions gets raised at the end of February.
And if I do decide to make it a premium-only feature (the option I like best at this point), I want to make that decision soon enough to allow people plenty of time to decide whether it's worth the $50 cost of using it.
What it boils down to is that we're in the message board business; not the IRC one. Not if being in the IRC business means providing a free but expensive service like the existing IRC servers do.
I'll have to see if I can get enough of this other stuff off my plate to work on seeing what percentage of the users currently using chat are subscribers and what percentage *only* use chat.
I like it as an inducement to subscribe; not as an inducement to just register on the site.
Matt. If you do the data on NVEI investors from when they joined the site. And then track their message board use after being here a while I'm very positive you will see chat is an attraction to the boards.
I agree with you. It is a great part of what makes up the Ihub experience!
