These are strange times indeed! I'm still gardening where you last saw my property. I resorted to mostly raised beds and large buckets. I have one 200 foot enclosure that keeps out the animals and birds.

The last picture I saw of you you were holding the head of lettuce the size of your chest.

Best of luck with you always; you taught a lot of people how to improve their gardening approach. I grow a lot of food and specialize in garlic, which I share with a few chefs. The latter feed me like a pig.

And yes, I'm still using azomite!

Impossible Burger: Got Glyphosate?

The company, Impossible Foods, is growing exponentially. Many are familiar with their Impossible Burger but they also make “fake” chicken, pork, sausage, and meatballs. You see these products in grocery stores, at Burger King, White Castle, Starbucks, and many restaurants. The company has an illustrious marketing campaign and lots of investors, including Bill Gates, who has invested over $75 Million in Impossible Foods. So what is the problem? There are several! For one, the protein in these products is made from genetically engineered soy which is Roundup-ready. This soy is engineered to withstand sprays of herbicide, especially Roundup. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and has been shown to wreak havoc with human health and the environment. Another huge problem is their “heme” as it is called, or hemoglobin. This heme is what makes the impossible burger “bleed” and looks like blood that you would find in real meat. How did they do this? There is a small amount of hemoglobin at the roots of the soy plant and they take the genetics for that and put it in a yeast, that no human had ever consumed and then use synthetic biology to make the yeast to make the bleedy stuff!

I spoke with Kelly Ryerson, who is an expert on Glyphosate, about the problems with these Impossible Foods. We talked about how the FDA allowed Impossible Foods to be on the market without any rigorous testing and how they decided to approve these products using GRAS (generally accepted as safe), even though the few studies that they did do resulted in health risks of blood clots, anemia, and kidney damage. It has also been approved to be in school lunches! Can you imagine what it does to a child’s developing immune system and the allergenicity of that soy? Call your schools and demand better!

Ryerson and I discussed some of the inherent dangers of eating these foods including consuming large quantities of glyphosate. Moms Across America tested the Impossible Burger and the levels of glyphosate detected in the Impossible burger by Health Research Institute Laboratories. The total result (glyphosate and its breakdown AMPA) was 11.3 ppb. Just for reference, only 0.1 ppb of glyphosate has been shown to alter the gene function of over 4000 genes in the livers and kidneys and cause severe organ damage in rats.



The question is why are people buying their products? We discussed their deceptive marketing tactics including saying their products are better for the environment and will reduce climate change. This is not true! When you look at the cost and environmental impact of making these products they are not environmentally friendly. GMO mono-crop farming from which this fake meat is derived increases climate change. GMO farming decreases microbes in the soil, increases chemical fertilizer input, and pollutes our waters. GMO farming also reduces carbon sequestration and increases nitrous oxide. Eating animal meat from CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) is not environmentally friendly either and everyone should be concerned about how animals are raised and the quality of that meat. There is a better way! If you choose to eat meat, eating 100% grass feed, humanly raised is such a better option. Organic regenerative farming, Joel Salatin’s methods which are widely practiced is a great example of how regenerative farming helps the environment. Check out my short interview with Joel!

We discussed many of these issues in greater detail in the hope that people who are consuming these products can be made aware of what they are really eating. This education needs to be widespread so please share this article and interview with others. If you are a vegan, there are so many better ways to get your protein including eating organic black bean burgers or lentil burgers, just to name a few.

Election Fraud would be a serious felony under normal circumstances, but under an active state of war it would be considered an act of treason. Think back Re: Kavanaugh conf. hearings. What are the requirements for a civilian to be tried for treason? We have been in a state of war since 2001.



Pelosi and all other members of Congress are NO LONGER members of Congress, they've forfeited their rights and offices by committing an act of TREASON.



They are no longer lawful members of Congress, (and this doesn't even include the Supreme Court justices who are complicit in carrying out this treason against our Nation!!), thanks to Section 3 of 14th Amendment. They are now considered enemies of the Republic who have aided a foreign power in stealing an election. When you have committed an act of treason, you forfeit your rights as an American. You have no rights. Military law vs civilian law?



Any evidence is admissible in a military tribunal court, so Pelosi's stolen laptop, along with the other 11 stolen laptops, can be used in her military tribunal along with everything else Pelosi has done, to lock her and the others away for good.

History will show that Donald Trump tried every legal avenue to solve this crisis against our Constitution. It will show that all others failed to address this Act of Treason. He tried to resolve this peacefully. His only recourse left was to use the military, but it will be a LAWFUL use of the military as these people have broken their oaths and committed TREASON and INSURRECTION.

President Donald J. Trump is LEGALLY REQUIRED to act on this because of his own oath to the Constitution, to protect our Republic from enemies Foreign AND DOMESTIC.

The crimes on their indictments will read; TREASON, SEDITION, and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. When the whole world finds out they launched a virus to steal an election, the Great Awakening will begin. They've sealed their fates!



And again, remember the brilliant preemptive/ offensive maneuver our President made when he signed the Executive Order and National Emergency Act on September 12, 2018...Any foreign or domestic interference in our National Elections carry severe consequences!

Of course high treason being chief among them as well as asset seizure/forfeiture, including those who deliberately aid in the execution and dissemination of misleading propaganda enforcing such treasonous activities!

Excel - thanks for the update plus I reviewed the site that you provided and I will give it a try.

I've had two droughts this summer with just one 20-minute rainfall that replenished my water tanks. I have two new enclosures, one is 200 square feet, to plant without concern about animals attacking the plants. I had a lengthy period of heat that killed the tomato blossoms inside the enclosure. Some other tomatoes that I planted using my earlier schedule fared better. Next year I will be back into my old planting schedule.

My garlic did crazy great. Part of my harvest goes to chefs who give me meals and rides to grocery stores.

Potatoes, my main pandemic survival crop, did great, as well.

I have two large aronia berry bushes. The berries are rather bitter, which I use in my morning oatmeal. This year due to the droughts, the birds that normally avoid the aronia, needed fluid and have been eating the berries. I said to myself that they need to survive too and so I didn't put a new over the berries.

I've got major concerns about our food supplies going forward. Things are already disappearing off the shelves and I think that the new norm will be scarcity. The skill set for growing food by a major part of our population was lost just after World War II, so three generations of people exist not knowing a thing about growing food.

UArizona moving 'vertical farming' forward

TUCSON, Ariz. — Droughts, rising temperatures, supply chain challenges and a war in Europe's breadbasket are making it harder to feed the planet.

But vertical farming is one possible solution: It happens indoors in a controlled environment, without the need for soil.

For years, students and researchers at the University of Arizona have studied how vertical farming can save space, time, and something scarce here in the desert: water.

"The amount of plants you can grow in a tiny footprint is insane," said bisoystems engineering graduate student Christopher Kaufmann.

Now UArizona is helping push the practice forward—literally. The Life Grow (LG) Bot puts a vertical farming frame on wheels.

It was invented by professor Joel Cuello and his team of graduate students. A seven-member team of engineering students designed a prototype for their Capstone Engineering Project, which was awarded the 'Roche Most Innovative Engineering Design' at UA Design Day 2022 in May.

The LG Bot continuously pumps water to the plants—which in this case are romaine lettuce. Any water not used by the plants is recycled.

"And we've tailored the nutrient solution to kind of be ideal for that specific crop," Kaufmann explained.

Above are specialized LED lights that simulate sunlight.

The process allows places usually without access to fresh produce—such as inner cities or 'Food Deserts'—to grow it themselves.

"You don't have to worry about [plants] having a long shelf life, and you can kind of supplement for quality once again," said Kaufmann. "And so, you get things that taste better and are better for you."

The LG Bot can be controlled, but also has automatic navigation software and sensors.

But the question remains: Why put wheels on vertical farming?

"The idea is to have some big warehouse, whether it be multiple levels or multiple rooms. Each room having some sort of different growing conditions, whether it be different humidity, different lighting levels.... something like that," said electrical and computer engineering graduate student Diego Moscoso. "The purpose of these robots is the move the plants from room to room, according to the growth stage that the plants are currently in."

These students say an entire fleet of the robots could mean growing lots of food, with a lot fewer people—reducing labor costs in the process.

"We could feed an entire town, an entire community," Moscoso said.

And they say, perhaps, even grow them on a space station or another planet.

"Where we are able to move these robots around from room to room and have a self-sustaining growing process that needs the absolute minimum amount of human interaction to actually get these plants grow," said Moscoso.

Like the plants, the hope is that this technology continues to grow.

I've had asparagus for six years now and the crop gets better every year.

Strawberries are a war with the birds but new screening should save the crop this year.

Last fall I dug out most of my rhubarb plants because I have had enough rhubarb to last a lifetime and they were taking up to much garden space.

Beekeepers using tracking devices to protect precious hives

WOODLAND, Calif. (AP) — For a few frenzied weeks, beekeepers from around the United States truck billions of honeybees to California to rent them to almond growers who need the insects to pollinate the state’s most valuable crop.

But as almond trees start to bloom, blanketing entire valleys in white and pink flowers, so begin beehive thefts that have become so prevalent that beekeepers are now turning to GPS tracking devices, surveillance cameras and other anti-theft technology to protect their precious colonies.

Hive thefts have been reported elsewhere in the country, most recently three hives containing about 60,000 bees taken from a grocery chain’s garden in central Pennsylvania. They happen at a larger scale and uniquely in California this time of year because bees are most in demand during the largest pollination event in the world.

In the past few weeks, 1,036 beehives worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were reported stolen from orchards statewide, authorities said. The largest heist involved 384 beehives that were taken from a field in Mendocino County, prompting the state beekeepers association to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to their recovery.

“It’s hard to articulate how it feels to care for your hives all year only to have them stolen from you,” Claire Tauzer wrote on Facebook to spread the word about the reward. A day later, an anonymous tipster led authorities to recover most of the boxes and a forklift stolen from Tauzer’s family business some 55 miles (88 kilometers) away, at a rural property in Yolo County. One suspect was arrested.

Investigators also found frames, the kinds used to hold the honeycomb, belonging to Helio Medina, another beekeeper who lost 282 hives a year ago.

Medina said the theft devastated his apiary, so this year he placed GPS trackers inside the boxes. He also strapped cable locks around them and installed cameras nearby. As the almond bloom approached and the hives became most valuable, he drove around patrolling the orchards in the dark.

“We have to do what we can to protect ourselves. Nobody can help us,” Medina said.

Thefts usually happen at night, when no one is in the orchard and the bees are back in their hives. The rustler is usually a beekeeper or someone familiar with the transportation of bees.

“More often than not, they steal to make money and leave the bees to die,” said Rowdy Jay Freeman, a Butte County sheriff’s detective who has been keeping track of hive thefts since 2013.

A tightening supply of bees and soaring pollination fees — jumping from less than $50 to rent a hive two decades ago to as much as $230 per hive this year — are likely motivating beekeepers to go rogue.

The demand for bees has steadily risen over the last 20 years as popularity of the healthy, crunchy nut turned California into the world’s biggest almond producer. Accordingly, the amount of land used to grow almonds has more than doubled to an estimated 1.3 million acres (526,000 hectares).

Beekeepers have been keeping up with that growth by providing an ever-increasing proportion of the nation’s available stock of hives. This year, a survey of commercial beekeepers estimated it will take 90% of honeybee colonies in the U.S. to pollinate all the almond orchards.

“What that means is that beekeepers are coming from as far as New York and Florida, and to get them to come all that way, pollinator fees have to rise,” said Brittney Goodrich, an agriculture economist at the University of California at Davis.

But bee populations are notoriously unstable due to a host of problems, including disease, loss of habitat and insecticides.

The drought that gripped Western states last summer also weakened colonies. The lack of rain ravaged wildflowers that provide the nectar that bees turn into honey. Beekeepers had to artificially supplement their diet with sugar solutions and pollen substitutes — and incur more costs.

For beekeepers, the loss of a hive means the loss of income from honey production and future pollination, not to mention the expense of managing the hive throughout the year. They say they hardly break even.

“For every $210 paid to rent a beehive, we put close to that much into it the whole year feeding the bees because of drought. We do all the health checks, which is labor intensive, and we pay our workers full benefits,” Tauzer said.

Denise Qualls, a pollination broker who connects beekeepers with growers, suspects the thefts are happening because beekeepers can’t provide the strong colonies they promised, “so they can get the money from the grower and then they leave the hives.”

“The grower is just as responsible when they accept them,” she said.

To help her clients track their investments, Qualls merged her business with tech startup Bee Hero to equip hive boxes with a GPS-enabled sensor.

Freeman, who got into beekeeping after investigating his first hive theft, said he advises beekeepers to use security cameras and put their names and phone numbers on the boxes.

He said some beekeepers have tried tagging their boxes with SmartWater CSI, a forensic tool used to help police trace recovered stolen property. The clear liquid is visible only under UV light, even through layers of paint, so police can ascertain the rightful owner even when thieves try to disguise boxes.

To raise the crime’s severity, Freeman worked with prosecutors in 2016 to charge a man accused of stealing 64 beehives with theft of livestock. Under California law, theft of property worth $950 or less is classified as a misdemeanor. But the theft of any agricultural product worth at least $250 is considered a felony.

“Stealing one or 10 or 100 hives would result in the same charge,” he said.

The man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation.

The California State Beekeepers’ Association urges beekeepers to communicate regularly with growers about where their hives are placed, and encourages growers to hire reputable beekeepers who can show proof of ownership of their hives. The almond industry, meanwhile, is trying to reduce its dependence on bees by growing “self fertile” almond varieties that require fewer bees for pollination and by investing in research and other initiatives aimed at improving their health.

The Almond Board of California also joined a coalition of agricultural, environmental and government groups to create habitat for wild bees, butterflies and other pollinators on privately owned working lands such as cattle ranches and orchards. The state government is funding $15 million toward the effort, calling it an investment in “climate smart agriculture.”
