Performance is important as it affects your asp. If AMD keep pulling away you might end up competing with Via for $30 chips, lol. I exaggerate of course but the point is still valid. You are ok for the moment as you can still make 3/3.2 Ghz chips in volume but things start getting nasty from here if your binsplits don't keep pace with AMD's.

RE:"Fortunately for you eternal believers, Intel is doing just that, but even then AMD is not making any substantial gains in market share and mindshare."

Exactly. It will take a year or more of AMD superiority before AMD can take substantial market share. AMD cannot rest on their laurels one minute. Some say Windows 64 is the key. Intel is stone walling that and AMD doesn't know what to do about it.

Tenchu, - about Intel's huge manufacturing capacity. I think you are exactly right, this advantage is and always will be extremely important.

This is why AMD had to regroup and move to the high-end market, where capacity constraints are less harsh.

For example, suppose Xeon just magically disappear - AMD is perfectly capable to supply 100% of the server market with its current capacity, just give it 3 months to reallocate waifers. This market is what - about 3 million chips per quarter? AMD can easily make 3 million Opterons per quarter, starting Q1 next year.

Same for 3400-4000 speed grades in desktop market. AMD is capable to cover this market alone, without Intel.

Sure, they will have to drop Sempron, pity...

The irrelevance of performance in the mass market.

This is perhaps the most stupid thing I have read in a very long time.

Tenchu - Why do you think AMD has shifted focus to servers? Precisely because they can bring performance that does matter to the table. The "rules" are changing in that arena.

I'd have to beg to differ with you on AMD's winning mindshare and marketshare in that arena. It's doing very well and will do much better in the future. Majority status anytime soon? No, but they're going to make money like they never have before!
