Dog: Hundreds of pieces of information are connected to UPC code by using the UPC as an index. For decades, we have used an index (the UPC) to pull this information across enterprise systems. This includes country of origin, images, associated coupon codes, descriptions, ingredients, size, weight, authorization, and on and on. The UPC code itself does not "encapsulate all this information." The UPC code is an index just as described in NeoMedia's patents.

So you are exactly arguing Scanbuy or EFF's case in your comparison.

NeoMedia's patent is actually different in that it reports to the browser where that information is located, not the actual information.

It is kind of like yelling at your wife 'where is the phillips screwdriver?' and she yells back that 'it is in my vanity', but never gets her hiney up to go and get it. That is the '048 patent.

I agree it can't all be in a UPC code. But the 048 patent does not cover 'anytime you connect to a remote server after scanning a barcode'. In particular, I don't see a reason to think a URL is returned at any point.
