Fair to whom? Labor unions always ask for fairness when it comes to excessive demands of wage increases and benefits. Fairness rings hollow when it is on a one-way street. The truth is U.S. doctors are paid much much more than doctors in other countries.
The vast majority of doctor's are more than fairly compensated. As a complete spectrum, they're at least a couple of standard deviations away from the median salary earned in the US.
There are just as many professions that do comparable years of training yet receive a fraction of the remuneration that doctors receive.
From a legal standpoint that is really funny. In fact, the only industry that I know of where the charges do not have to be reasonable is medicine. Most states if not all of them have statutes that allow charges for medical care that are "ordinary and customary" or words to similar intent.
That has lead to the odd situation where an uninsured person may get a $500 bill for an emergency room visit while a managed care patient's carrier might pay $20.
BTW - I am not anti-MD or hospitals.
My dad was an MD and all he cared about was his patients. He was a great doctor and a lousy businessman.
