Windsock, Re: Another question that Centrino laptop owners ask is if I only have a 1.5 Mbs internet connection why do I need more than my current 11 Mbs wireless connection?

Well you know that bigger numbers sell more. :-)

Seriously, though, a higher bandwidth connection won't help you on the Internet very much, but in home or corporate networks, it comes in pretty handy. I tried transferring quite a bit off my desktop system one day and found that it took hours just to copy several gigabytes of files through the wireless connection. While the 'Droids might consider this "proof" that I should have gotten an 802.11g adapter, I'll remind people that transferring gigabytes of files from my desktop is not a routine thing for me. It might only happen once in the life of this particular laptop. For 99.99% of what I do - which primarily involves the Internet - my Centrino laptop has many times more than enough bandwidth to saturate my DSL connection. In fact, it's still the envy of everyone who has seen it.

Windsock, very few Centrino owners know enough to even understand that question, much less ask it -

Another question that Centrino laptop owners ask is if I only have a 1.5 Mbs internet connection why do I need more than my current 11 Mbs wireless connection?

However, they do know this: When an Athlon-M owner wirelessly connects to a Centrino to transfer a DVD movie from one hard disk to the other, it takes 5x longer than it should! Let's see... a typical movie will be around 6GB, at 11Mb/S, counting 10 bits to a byte (incl. protocol overhead), that would take 6144/(11/10) = 5585 seconds, a little more than an hour & a half to the Centrino.

Between two Athlon-M systems, that would be 6144/(55/10) = 1117 seconds, less than 19 minutes.

OK - 1.5 hrs vs. 19 minutes, which is faster?

Try walking upstairs or onto your patio outside and see what your connnection speed is == why 802.11b is not good enough.
